Haynesworth's difference on the field
2009-09-18 01:54:00
Haynesworth's difference on the field " Like any other defensive lineman, Haynesworth gets breaks. In the opener, Haynesworth played 45 of the Redskins defense's 61 snaps (73.7 percent)." Haynesworth played more than I thought he did. I remember Jeff Fisher saying that Haynesworth played about 60% of their defensive snaps so obviously he was out there more for us, even though it was only one game. This pretty much sums up Haynesworth's effectiveness for us perfectly. BREAKING IT DOWN Run Location-----Att-----Yds-----Av-g Away From Haynesworth-----10-----44-----4-.4 At Haynesworth-----3-----(-2)------(-0.7) Outside On Haynesworth's side-----8-----16-----2.0 Haynesworth On Bench-----7-----48-----6.86 I admit that I was expecting more push up the middle from Haynesworth, or even a sack here or there. However, you have to admit that no one is going to successfully run on us with Haynesworth in the game.
Why isn't Soldier Field a fitting place for a Walter Payton statue?
2009-09-16 16:04:00
Fred Mitchell writes on chicagotribune.com that the family of Walter Payton has been rebuffed in its efforts to donate a statue of him for display outside Soldier Field. They said the Chicago Park District told them that Soldier Field and the surrounding area is to be preserved strictly as a memorial to war veterans. If there was a statue of a World War I doughboy outside Soldier Field, a statue of a football player alongside would seem inappropriate. But it's the edifice itself that's a lasting war memorial, the columns in particular. That's all they preserved when Soldier Field was rebuilt. I can't fathom any objection to honoring a man who was the face of Chicago Bears football for the better part...
Should Walter Payton get a statue at Soldier Field?
2009-09-16 08:19:00
It's a question that seems almost silly to ask: Should a statue of Walter Payton be erected outside Soldier Field? (Chicago Tribune) Good Lord, of course. He's the greatest player in Bears history, maybe in NFL history, and was beloved off the field as well as on. This is the no-brainer of no-brainers. Except it's not. The Chicago Park District doesn't want it to happen because, according to the Chicago Tribune, "Soldier Field and the area surrounding it is to be preserved strictly as a memorial to war veterans." Well, that makes perfect sense. Football is war-like, but it's not war. And to mix fake war with those who fought in real wars is beyond insensitive. Vote in the poll...

ASK WALEE-mail me here. I will be answering your questions about the Bears and life in the NFL every week on my blog. I think you and Alex Brown don't get a lot of credit. You two play with so much passion on both sides of the ball. Do you use all that negative comments for motivation for your games and does it pump you up? I also appreciate you always opening up and talk to us after games and practice when we see you. It means a lot, keep it up 93. Alot of you guys are great people on and off the field. The Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field
2009-09-10 07:05:00
I'm writing my Week One Bears pick on Thursday morning for two reasons.  (1) I'm too damn excited to wait and (2) I'll be nowhere near a computer for the next twenty-four hours.  So, without further adieu...YOUR 2009 CHICAGO BEARS over those fellas from WisconsinWhy do I like the Chicago Bears this week?I always like the Chicago Bears. The Packers will score in this game - most likely early.  But Jay Cutler and the offense will respond quickly, allowing the defense to play the final three quarters without the pressure of the last three years.  It'll ignite the pass rush and lead to a big turnover or two in Packers' territory.Brad Maynard has been quietly kicking the hell out of the...
An Interview With Author Susan Burleson About The Tented Field
2009-09-01 17:06:00
I am a fan of history. Oh, not the sanitized pasteurized, homogenized version taught in our school system. History is about society, it is about the life and times of the people concerned. The American Civil War was a period of huge upheaval in our recent history, it pitted brother against brother, it put a ...

Wait a Minute! Education Isn't a Level Playing Field?
2009-08-06 14:05:00
In this photo taken July 21, 2009, Niranjan Shah, chairman of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees, testifies during a meeting of an independent commission investigating clout-driven admissions at the university. On Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, Shah resigned amid the investigation into the use of political clout to get underqualified students into the school. (AP Photo/M. Spencer Green) The best part about the scandals enveloping the University of Illinois and now the elite schools among Chicago Public School System is that, really, no one cares. Oh, I know, people are making a big stink about it. The Chairman of the board of trustees of the University of Illinois, Niranjan Shah, and trustee Lawrence Eppley have already resigned and...

Gold Cup Semis Tonight at Soldier Field

Chicago's getting a double dip of soccer action as the Gold Cup semifinals make their way to Soldier Field on Thursday for an exciting night of international soccer. I'll be at Soldier Field for both the U.S. - Honduras match as well as the Costa Rica - Mexico game (look for a matchday post later on in the day, I might provide a bit of running commentary...) and you can click here to read the semifinal preview I put together for the Tribune. What Kind of ivy Grows at Wrigley Field?
2009-07-20 05:32:00
Parthenocissus Tricuspidata, commonly known as Boston Ivy is a member of the grape family. It is also known as Japanese creeper, Grape Ivy or Japanese ivy. This is the ivy that covers the outfield wall at Wrigley Field. Boston Ivy should not be confused with English Ivy, Hedera helix, or any hybrids, especially if you are growing a Cubs themed garden like the reader who Email me the question is doing. If you want accessories for a Chicago Cubs themed garden you can find many garden gnomes online to suit your needs....

I wish I was making this up, but I have been known to wear my wet suit in the pool.  I hate cold water, hate it, hate it, hate it! So as I headed to Chicago Endurance Sports open water swim clinic, this afternoon, I was not in a good mood.  Today ( Wednesday) was a dark, cold, rainy day and the last thing I wanted to do was get into Lake Michigan.  The clinic is great, and there will be more about CES and their coaches later in the month, this is about me.My experience with wet suits to this point is they do keep you warmer than not having one on, but when it's cold, you are S.O.L.  ...

Field Bindweed
2009-06-18 23:12:00
Field Bindweed is one of my favorite weeds. Yeah, I said it. It was introduced into the U.S in the early 1800s and has become a nuisance in gardens, lawns, alleys and empty lots around Chicago and across the country. The weed is tough to eradicate because it has a strong and extensive root system. In just one growing season this weed can take over a garden and begin to choke out cultivated plants....
