Maori Party no example for Fiji Youth.
2009-08-17 03:37:00 Image via WikipediaHaving heard the Radio New Zealand coverage given this day to cannabis in Fiji, it is clear that the dysfunction, unintended consequences and alienation from rule of law is to be perpetuated in the name of a drug war long found wanting.Cannabis ‘criminalisation’ demands law reform. It is perpetuating anti-youth prejudice (on a global scale) and a distraction from what is really broken. With many friends from Fiji informing me of the role ‘cannabis’ black markets have in elevating mistrust, creating intractable problems, feeding corruption, ingraining gangsta culture and pandering to ‘get tough’ enforcement suggests a much more informed dialog has to be held. The United Nations has already indicated that the ‘user base’ must be consulted but this is an anathema to many, yet it is the path we must walk. Drug use, even under prohibition, must be acknowledged. The idea that ‘if only we can teach how dangerous this is to (inoculate?) the kids before the...
Ecco Windows Fiji, if Media Center del futuro
Windows ?Fiji? beta testing has begun
2008-05-20 23:13:00 Speaking of Microsoft information lockdown, there?s been no word in ages from Microsoft about ?Fiji,? the next version of Windows Media Center Edition. But that isn?t because Fiji has evaporated. In fact, the Fiji beta began a few weeks ago, according to a few sources with whom I?ve spoken and who?ve asked to keep their identities under wraps. It?s not clear how many testers are part of this current test phase. There?s also no word on when and if Microsoft is going to tap the many other Fiji testers whom the company has signed up over the past year-plus or when Microsoft expects Fiji ? also known as ?Media Center Edition +1? in some circles ? is due out. Last anyone heard, Fiji was supposed to build on the functionality that Microsoft delivered as part of Vista Service Pack 1. Some potential testers said they heard that Fiji would deliver some of the fit and finish that was missing in the Vista release. DirectTV support also is expected to be added to Media Center with the Fiji rel...

Fiji Media Center Beta Inches Closer
2008-03-31 15:10:00 We have been waiting for Microsoft to open the beta for Fiji, the suspected codename for the next version of Media Center for well over a year now. I first posted about it in March of last year, with invites first opening just a month after that, and now it appears we may finally have taken a step forward. Users (who shall remain nameless, because I edited them out) at The Green Button are reporting that they have received e-mails from Microsoft Connect. If true, this would be the first step to finally getting something in our hands to play with (under NDA of course). This release will bring DIRECTV support among other unannounced features. I had expected it to include HD DVD support, but I wouldn?t count on that any more. Other features have been kept under tight wraps, though I?ve got a few in mind that I?m rather sure will be there. Soft Coral Capital of the World, Fiji-photos
2008-02-28 14:29:00 Fiji, ?the Soft Coral Capital of the World?, is rated as one of the top 10 dive destinations in the world. It is well deserved. Fiji is truly a diver?s paradise where the daily menu is so diversified that it is sometimes difficult to believe you are in the same country.

Cyclone hits Fiji, two dead
2008-01-29 07:45:00 SUVA (Reuters) - A tropical cyclone with winds gusting up to 140 kpm hit Fiji's main island of Viti Levu on Monday, flattening houses, causing flooding and bringing down trees and powerlines, officials said. Two men were killed when they were electrocuted by fallen powerlines, police said. Cyclone Gene, a category one storm, crossed the west coast of Viti Levu and is forecast to intensify and move in a southeast direction overnight towards the capital Suva, officials said. "The cyclone is expected to intensify further, probably reaching a category two system by late tomorrow," said Rajendra Prasad, director of Fiji's bureau of meteorology. Many Fijians living in coastal villages on the west side of Viti Levu, which is also the country's main tourist centre, have moved to higher ground, with warnings of heavy seas and swells. Officials in the western town of Nadi warned residents not to be outside their homes as the cyclone moves through their area. "People...

There Be Cannibals!
2007-11-28 11:43:00 Updated November 29:My understanding of cannibalism is not good. It's well-known that starving people in just about any society will eat their own dead. Clearly, the Anasazi Indians of Arizona and New Mexico, ancestors of today's Navajo and Hopi, engaged in cannibalism during the 1300's. I don't care what the Indians say. Indian tribes are notorious liars when it comes to denying anything that makes them look bad.The cannibals and head-hunters of New Guinea are well-known, and some were said to continue to engage in the practice until the mid-1960's. Cannibalism was well-known in other parts of the world, especially Polynesia and Fiji. It was legendary in New Guinea and widely practiced in Australia too.The cannibals of the Congo below were not the only ones in Africa, just some of the more notorious. There were also cannibals in the Brazilian Amazon and a few in North America here and there. But Polynesia, especially New Zealand, had some of the worst cannibals of all. A Maori ...

Coral Kingdoms
2007-10-30 17:44:00 A Fijian reef explodes in color as a school of anthias swims past. If a soft coral hosts zooxanthellae (the algae that give coral the nutrients it needs to grow) and the water becomes too warm, the algae leave and the soft coral die. Unlike hard corals, soft corals don?t leave a limestone skeleton behind and cannot regenerate.Photograph by Tim LamanAppearing as flowers of the sea, the tentacles of an orange cup coral reach out in the waters of the Caroline Islands in Micronesia. Fijis Rainbow Reef
2007-10-16 13:46:00 In the South Pacific a spectacular reef system takes an environmental walloping and lives to tell the tale. Scientists are listening closely.Fiji's reefs can take a punch and come back swinging Expert at being both whomped and resilient, these reefs are prime ground for scientists struggling to understand the catastrophic decline of Earth's coral habitats. Though cyclones, disease, predators, and volcanic eruptions all harm reefs, corals tend to regenerate after such natural blows. But the carbon-dioxide-rich atmosphere humanity is brewing, and the resulting rise in sea temperatures, may cripple coral's ability to recover. When water heats up, corals expel the symbiotic algae that provide nutrients and color, leaving the corals "bleached." Some scientists theorize that bleaching evolved to help corals adjust to shifting temperature by swap-ping existing algae for others more heat-hardy. But as global temperatures rise, corals are reaching their upper limits of heat tolerance. In F...

RWC: Pumas & Springboks To Clash Next Weekend
2007-10-08 02:27:00 Yesterday was a day of upsets as Australia & New Zealand tasted defeat. Today the favorites won but it wasn't easy. South Africa defeated a spirited Fiji side 37-20 while the Pumas got past Scotland 19-13.I followed the matches online via the commentary chat at Planet-Rugby.com, so it was tough to get a real feel for the action. I'll watch the matches on tape delay tomorrow. I was able to catch yesterday's quarter-final games earlier today and both of those matches were fantastic!!! The spirit shown by France and England is what makes rugby such a special sport. I think the France vs England semi-final will be off the charts and I may have to pay the cash to watch it live rather than on Pay Per View.So next weekend we have England vs France and Argentina vs South Africa. I'll post my thoughts later in the week.

RWC: Quarter-Final Predictions
2007-10-05 16:21:00 Well the "money rounds" begin this weekend in the Rugby World Cup and with the exception of maybe England, every team in the quarters deserve to be there. I took a shot at England because with the exception of Ireland, England was the worst performing "rugby power" in this year's tournament. Before all you "blokes" tear my ass up over my statement, allow me to give my predictions for the other quarterfinal matches first.South Africa-21Fiji-17The Springboks were my initial pick to win the RWC this year and atleast for now I'm going to stand by that pick. However, look for them to struggle against a very quick Fiji side. Fiji has nothing to lose at this point, which should scare the Springboks because the expectations from South African supporters are so high. It should be a better match than most people think.Argentina-28Scotland-7The- Pumas should have a fairly easy time disposing of Scotland, which would set up a fantastic semi-final match with the Springboks, a match which may ca...

Wales vs Fiji score, review, stats
2007-09-30 09:09:00 Fiji 38 Wales 34 There's been a lot of wanging on about this being the best game of the world cup so far. I guess for a sevens style of free-flowing fluctuating game yes.
