Search specific file types with Google
2007-09-04 23:42:00
It seems this is old Google tip but… To search files by their name and extensions like mp3 or other, just do: intitle:index.of + “mp3″ + “gimme back my bullets” To get results without *.htm or *.html files, perform: intitle:index.of + “mp3″ + “gimme back my bullets” -htm -html After that Google will give you a lot of ...
Add Shortcut Menu Items to Specific File Types
2007-08-14 09:48:00
When you right-click a file in Explorer, you get a shortcut menu that includes a list of programs with which you can open the file. But the programs you want to open those files might not always be on the shortcut menu. It's easy to add new programs to that list. Let's say you want to add a shortcut menu item that allows .gif files to be opened with the freeware graphics viewer IrfanView . From Windows Explorer, choose Tools Folder Options File Types. In the Registered File Types list, select the file type for which you want to add a new shortcut menu item. In our example, we'll choose a GIF file. After this hack, any time you click a file of this type, you'll get a new choice to open the file with.Once you've chosen your file type, choose Advanced New. You'll see the New Action dialog box shown in Figure 3-12.Figure 3-12. Adding a new program to the shortcut menuIn the New Action box, type the text you want to appear on the shortcut menufor example, Open with IrfanView. In...
How to Refine Google to Search File Types easily?
2007-07-23 11:04:00
Many a times we may be looking for Word Documents or PDF files while doing research. But didn't want to drop by at the library to look for the same. In all such scenarios, Google is the Best Resource to look for Research Papers to Data Sheets to Free Music. Here's how you can effectively search using Google.Copy {-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:"index of" +"last modified" +"parent directory" +description +size +(doc|pdf|txt) " Search terms"} into the search bar and replace Search terms with a document title to find open indexes that contain downloadable text files. You can change the files being searched from (doc|pdf|txt) to (mp3|wma|wav) to find audio files or indeed to include any other file extension you may need. (doc|pdf|txt) means that only indexes containing doc OR pdf OR txt files are shown in results. If all this copying and pasting is too much, you can also visit G2P (Google to Person) under http://www.g2p.org, which offers an input-field interface to Google searche...
Add Global Shortcut Menu Items to All File Types
2007-07-14 09:51:00
The previous section of this hack showed how to add shortcut menu items on a file-type-by-file-type basis. In other words, it will be available only on the shortcut menu for the one specific file type you specify. But you can also add that shortcut menu item to every type of file by using a Registry hack. This is useful when you have a program that can open a wide variety of file types, and you don't want to have to add a shortcut menu item for every one of those file types. I use the IrfanView graphics viewer for many different types of graphics, so I want it to show up on all those types. Although it will also show up on file types I won't use it with, such as Word files, it's still worth putting it on the menu globally because of all the time I save by not having to add shortcut menu items over and over again for each file type.Run the Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*. Create a new subkey called Shell if it doesn't yet exist. The Shell subkey can control parts of...
Backdooring File Type X or Making a program do what it?s sup
2006-09-26 14:48:01
You know what I’m fed up with… people making “security” related discoveries that aren’t really discoveries… they’re just common sense…. There are two guilty parties here that I’m extremely unhappy with: David Kierznowski and pdp. David actually made the news for his Backdooring PDFs blog…. pdp has had several Backdooring .Mov, Backdooring Flash, and Backdooring MP3s.. Let’s take a look at each of these.. PDF - Portable Document Format - A Document that is entirely self-contained and cross platform… These documents have to, essentially, be “compiled” from other documents… sort of like an executable being compiled from source code. It would make sense that they support their own programming language, which in this case happens to be a javascript variant. This isn’t a software flaw, it’s functional software being utilized completely for malicious reasons. MOV - Movile Files - These fi...
