Havaianas Filipinas
2009-06-19 15:52:00 My personal celebration of Philippine Independence Day got extended with a new pair of special havaianas® flip-flops that I got today. Havaianas Philippines sent me their limited-edition Filipinas, which are “emblazoned with renditions of Filipino pride.” And they were serious about the nationalistic campaign. They sent the flip-flops along with truly Filipino icons: a miniature jeepney replica, a bag of dried mangoes, and a packet of Choc•Nuts!! Seeing the Choc•Nuts brought to mind images of my much younger days… Suddenly, comfortable tsinelas and those pseudo-chocolate goodies do make a nostalgic match. “Emblazoned with renditions of Filipino pride, the Limited Edition Havaianas Filipinas Collection features the style Havaianas Filipinas Plain, which showcases a stylized pin of Philippine colors and the style Havaianas Filipinas Print, which features the ever-enduring symbol of Filipino culture, art and lifestyle, the Jeepney, rendered in edg...

Unaccompanied Minor Fees/Charges
2008-05-24 16:46:00 Whenever Tutubi hears of kids flying solo, he remembers the romantic film Sleepless in Seattle, starring Tom Hanks (Sam) and Meg Ryan (Annie), where Sam's son Jonah flew alone to New York to meet Annie to realize his wish for his lonely daddy. That's the movies where almost every rule can be broken for "cinematic effect."In reality, you need to know the rules and the law before before your kid flies on an airline alone. Usually, you need to pay additional fees for the service as well the law of the destination country. For unaccompanied minor children below fifteen traveling to the Philippines alone or without a parent, be aware of the (stupid) Waiver of Exclusion Ground contained in an old Commonwealth Act 613 (that should be repealed, Tutubi thinks). More information on WEG below from one official Philippine Embassy website:"WAIVER OF EXCLUSION GROUND (WEG) FOR UNACCOMPANIED MINOR CHILDREN(12) Children under fifteen years of age, unaccompanied by or not coming to a parent, except ...
The Virgin Beach of Calaguas Island
2008-05-24 12:02:00 After a hearty lunch of laing, a Bicol specialty of taro leaves in coconut milk and chili, and grilled yellow fin tuna in Apuao Grande Island, Tutubi and his group "sailed" on for more than two hours to reach their desired destination that fueled the whole tour of Camarines Norte: the virgin beach of Calaguas Island. The journey was long even made worse by the not so placid water of the Philippine Sea with sightings of small islands with rolling hills and small patches of white sand beaches visible from afar, but the distance and time was immaterial to the ultimate quest was at hand. There are many islands belonging to Calaguas group of islands but the main island has the longest white sand beach of them all that locals call Mahabang Buhangin (literally long sand, translate loosely as Long Beach). Upon setting foot on Mahabang Buhangin, the fine white sand of the beach is truly something to behold. The sand is as fine, if not finer than the powdery white sand of Bora, and also n...

An Island in Caliraya Lake
2008-03-02 02:44:00 Lake Caliraya evokes memories of Tutubi's childhood particularly the nearby Japanese Garden. It's a man-made lake created by the Americans by flooding a valley of the Sierra Madre mountains to generate hydroelectric power. It's populated with largemouth bass.A recent free tour of Caliraya was arranged with a jeepney owner from Paete with pictures of the nameless island in Caliraya:Banca (native outrigger boats) of the lakeBoat boarding timewashing clothes: a typical scene of rural life in the Philippines near rivers and lakes (that contribute to water pollution, btw)bahay kubo on the lake shorethe ever loyal guard dog at the boat bowthe basic bahay kubo accomodation on the small island owned by the Anonuevo family (Tutubi even offered to buy the property if it's for sale...but that's just a joke). You may also pitch tents for camping funKids playing on the beach...watch out children, folks here still think water of the lake sucks people forunknown reasons...mainly superstition ...
The Traditional Egg Offering to St. Clare
2008-03-01 14:27:00 Jaz, an events coordinator in the corporate world, keeps a checklist of things to do in every event she's planning. Most noticeable in her list is the offering of eggs to St. Clare at the Monasterio de Santa Clara to help pray for good weather. The Monasterio de Sta. Clara, a popular monastery originally located in Intramuros before the war, is where nuns of the Order of Saint Clare of Assisi (known as the Poor Clares) lead a life of prayer and strictly follow the vow of poverty. The cream-colored church is where by tradition, people come with offerings (usually eggs) and ask the saintly nuns to pray for good weather.devotees to St. Clare leave their prayer requests hoping for solutions to their from simple problems to miracles Regarding the traditional offering of eggs, Philippine National Artist for Literature, Alejandro Roces, in his book Fiesta, theorized that Sta. Clara's name has something to do with it for the word clara, in the language of Castille, means ?fair weather? (pa...
