Twilight and treachery: the postwar European film noir
2008-02-04 12:42:00
To coincide with the BFI release of Bertolucci’s The Conformist (Il Conformista, 1970), BFI Southbank will be screening a selection of titles surrounding the concept of European film noir throughout March, including Jules Dassin’s Night and the City (1950) and the rarely seen The Lost One (Der Verleone, 1951), starring Peter Lorre in a story about a doctor manipulated by the Nazis.  The BFI will also be addressing the question of “What exactly is film noir?” The press release for the season states that the term was first used in 1946 by French critics, familiar with crime novels published under the moniker of Série Noire. However, the term is probably more often associated with a certain kind of Hollywood film, which probably began with The Maltese Falcon (1941) and grew in prominance throughout the 1940s. It refers to a style of filmmaking - bathing the film in black shadows, using narrative flashbacks and including a femme fatale character. The BFI ...

Aural Film Noir Excursions Re-upBack by popular demand! Well, not really, but I had to say it. Recently, a person that goes the by the initials "LD" requested that this film noir mix be re-upped. Thanks to "LD", those of you who didn't get a chance to hear/download this before will get a second chance. It was originally posted on January 8, 2007, back when Eclectic Grooves was still in it's early stages of development. If you want to see the original post for this, please go here.I love compiling mix-tapes/Cd's, but this one was a real labor of love. I believe that this mix is my greatest achievement. I would love to hear what you think about the mix. Here's the setlist:
Delicatessen (1991)
2007-08-13 19:34:00
This movie is directed by Jean-Pierre Jeonet, same guy who directed “Le Fabuleux destin d’Amelie Poulain” (aka “Amelie” in US release), which was so big in Europe and which I love so much. So I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that Netflix had added Delicatessen to my “Recommended Movies” list. Apart from director, these ...
Indiana Jones As Film Noir
2007-05-31 04:16:00
A clip from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, converted to grayscale and filtered with deep tenebrist contrasts, to resemble a true 1930s era film noir. It’s almost completely convincing. Had they released the film in this form, it would have improved it considerably.

I apologize for posting so infrequently lately, but I have been in the process of looking for a new job and I am moving in with my girlfriend at the end of January. This will give you a chance to explore the archives of Eclectic Grooves. Please let me know if anything needs reposted, as I will be checking my e-mail every day.I was inspired to create this mix after viewing many film noir movies such as Touch of Evil, The Maltese Falcon and The Third Man. I loved these films and appreciated that the music was almost another character in the dark and seedy streets of crime, corruption, deception and lust. The music in film noir movies is decidely slow and moody with mostly smoky jazz that complements the cool detachment of the characters portrayed in the films. My general idea was to create a mix tape of songs that would fit in a 40's/50's film noir crime drama, but one in which none of the songs were actually from a movie soundtrack(Jim Jarmusch featured the Mulatu Estatke song on th...

Hiromi Nagasaku. Perfect Film Noir beauty.
2006-08-09 19:00:14
Hiromi Nagasaku (Nagasaku Hiromi, born 14 October 1970) is an actress, and was the member of the J-pop group Ribbon. She was born in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan and debuted as a solo singer on 4 August 1993. Hiromi has a kind of intense beauty not found in most other Japanese women, who traditionally veer towards the sultry or cute. I love her in the black and white frames.. it really brings out her unique style and charisma. Tags: ????, asian babes, Hiromi Nagasaku, ribbon, J-Pop
