10 Minute Film School
2008-02-02 00:59:00
When I first wanted to try my hand at Filmmaking, I was inspired by a book called ‘Rebel without a Crew’ by Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. Rodriguez believed that everything you need to know about filmmaking, can be learnt in 10 minutes. I decided instead of spending my time and money at Film School. I ...
International film School, Sydney
2008-01-13 14:00:00
After quite a few years working in digital media education, production and research at the the Powerhouse Musuem of applied arts and sciences I am, as of today, taking up a new role as Head of Technological Arts at the International Film School, Sydney.  IFSS is a relatively new and dynamically exapnding instution, I am very excited by the chance to put in practice some of the broad spectrum of the ideas I have written about in the filmmaking manifesto Holistic Thinking - Integrated Making. The school has a strong focus on screenwriting, directing and storytelling and to this I hope to bring a holistic apporach of integrated production process to make for self-sufficient, technologically empowered and forward-thinking filmmakers of the future. Filmmakers who think beyond traditional theatrical paradigms and are ready to embrace the myriad of possibilities for what filmmaking is and can be. Head of IFSS, Duncan Thompson, speakes in this video about the culture of IFSS and what it...

10 minute film school
2007-12-29 14:00:00
Robert Rodriguez's 10 minute Film School lecture has become famous for its stright to the point, all-digital, get your hands dirty approach. And now its availible in video form - 2 parts with an additional '5 Minute Film SChool'. Whilst the values of a comprehensive, long-form, broad-ranging education should never be devalued or underestimated; there is none the less an enorumous strength to the self-sufficuency and pragamtaism of RR's approach.

Explorers Film School
2007-11-07 19:20:00
On a recent diving trip my buddy and I were able to view our pictures, and even video footage, within minutes of getting out of the water. Saving images and video to flash drives, and having them instantly available, is strange. I'm used to carefully planning out each shot of 35mm film, and biting my nails for a week or so--after returning to civilization--for the results; maybe a handful of saleable shots in one 36-frame roll, maybe only two. It's all changed, though, and I'm going digital. A professional photographer friend of mine, who owns and operates PhotographersDirect said it the other day: 'Film is dead.' RIP, film! I'll miss you. Speaking of expedition videography, here's a link to Andrew Miles' new Explorers Film School (it's in England); Andy has filmed in Antarctica, the Himalaya, under Arctic pack ice, in the Candian Rockies...you name it. He shot supplemental video of my 2000-2004 SoloIce expedition to Iceland for the film 'The Deadly Glacier' (National Ge...
Film School - Hideout

In the wake of an extremely trying breakout tour (including having all their equipment stolen) and the dreaded ?creative differences,? lead singer Greg Bertens and keyboardist Jason Ruck are basically the only constant members remaining from 2006?s brilliant self-titled release. This band is still Bertens?s baby, though, so things aren?t too different. The sound is ...
Musical Brain Expansion

Hey! Hope your well. So i'm back after a few days away becoming a graduate of the University of Lincoln. Since I last posted i've listened to a huge amount of music previously unheard of by my ears. This ranges from new mp3's, to new albums I bought when in London, to raiding my Dad's CD collection. All of which means I have alot of excellent bands and artists to write about in the coming days and weeks..Also since i've been away, you will have hopefully read and enjoyed the first post by guest writer, and my good friend, Craig Duranti. If you've listened to the tracks Craig suggested i'm sure you'll agree he has impeccable taste, and I hope you enjoy reading his posts as much as I will!.To get back into the flow of things i'll start off by recommending some cool new tracks i've recently got into. Enjoy!MP3: Air Traffic - No More Running AwayCategory: Indie/Pop/RockInfo: Released as a single on 24/09/2007Label: EMIComment: From the album "Fractured Life" (2007)More: http:/...
10 minute Film School by Robert Rodriguez
2007-09-18 03:29:00
Good Morning Class! Now a famous film-maker a while back said something about ‘Everything you need to know about film you can learn in a week.’ He was being generous. You can learn it in 10 minutes. Set your watches we will be out of here in ten kids. Okay, so you wanna be a film-maker? (Class choruses ‘YES’) Wrong! ...
Film School - Two Kinds
2007-09-16 20:16:00
It hasn?t been the best of years for San Francisco's Film School. They say bad things happen in three?s and so over a period of just 12 months the band has had to endure the departure of several members (including guitarist Nyles Lannon), Greg Bertens' mugging and also having their tour van stolen. Probably not the best run in for a 3rd album but indications are that ?Hideout? is set to be a cracker. ?Lectric? has already done the rounds on the blogs and is a fantastically retro shindig that recalls many of the highlights from last year?s self-titled LP. ?Two Kinds? is less pronounced but all the more precious for it. For once the instrumentation is held in check, an organ provides a Cure like atmosphere while Bertens vocals are allowed space to prove how sweet they really are. 'Hideout' was released last week and includes a contribution from Colm O'Ciosoig of My Bloody Valentine fame (in training for the mooted new album?). Should you go to film school?
2007-08-28 21:31:00
Many aspiring filmmakers don’t know if film school is right for them. Some people are dead set against the idea of going to film school, while others say you aren’t actually serious about being a director if you don’t go to film school. So, I’m sure that those of you who are confused ...
5 Minute Film School
2007-08-23 16:00:00
I have no idea who Dov S-S Simens is but the bombast energy of his BlipTV channel of 5min, 1min and 30sec Film School videos is quite remarkable. Whilst watching, and having now watched, I'm still unsure if I'm inspired or repulsed. :) He's adamant that its Show-Biz NOT Show-Art, a statement which will have the talentless enthusiasts cheering and the lackadaisical artists despairing. But at the same time his advise of keeping your first screenplays simple and in one location is very sound and considered. His rant against Short Films borders on a tirade (as much as you can have a tirade in a 1 minute video) and seems misplaced and condescending (perhaps just to me as Ive made much of my living and career on short films). Anyway you slice it though, these videos are well wort the watching, if for no other reason to begin to sort in your own head how you want to work and what you thik is important.... or just to have a good laugh.

A 12-Point Manifesto for Film School
2007-06-03 16:00:00
The manifesto continues to grow and I'm gratful to a number of people and energetic conversations that prompt me to add to it. So now it becomes a 12-Point Manifesto with two other crucial elements for re-thinking the educaion of Film-Makers for the future. You can read here points 1-6 and 7-10 and eventually I'll compile them more coherently :)11. The perptual motion machine of collaborative learning. Each student is to be a potential teacher. Show enough of a set of skills to prompt all students forward to ask their own questions on where they want to go to next; show these stuents what they need to get there. In a very short time every member of a class will know one or two things that most of th rest of the class dont related to where they wanted to take their creation. Before you know it the class is a pertual motion machine as students begin to teach other and the Teacher themself becomes a guide to good practice and bigger thinking whilst the students embrace a true and deep...

The 10-Point Film School Manifesto
2007-05-28 16:00:00
After ploughing out into the world my 6-point manifesto for film schools; a conceptually forward looking, re-thinking of what we teach and how we teach when it comes to cinematic media - I have been prompted to expand it to a 10-point manifesto (and I aint adverse to further expansion).I am greatful to Dr Greg Dolgopolov of the University of NSW for contributing 4 more...7. Screen studies - knowing screen theory and history so that students are not just looking at recent release films but examining films both technically and thematically across a range of cultures, genres and styles. An informed filmmaker is a better filmmaker. 8. Working with clearly defined obstructions in developing projects that may never end up as a ‘completed’ film/video. Film School (in any form) is a licence to make mistakes; mistakes you may never again be allowed to make. 9. Working Lo-Fi but High-Concept . If you can make a movie on a mobile camera you can make a movie on anything. If you can coheren...

Daily Digs: Afgan Whigs, Film School, The Sonics & More?
2006-10-11 09:54:02
Rock fans should be more than satisfied with today’s ‘Daily Digs’, as Nirvana, Kyuss, The Sonics and the Stone Temple Pilots are all highlights on this listing. More Halloween related material, as the ‘Evil Dead Soundtrack’ is simply classic and the ‘Halloween Sound Effects’ album is an out-of-print selection and is best described by the [...]
Recensie: Film School - Hideout
