Finally a few smallmouth
2012-02-06 14:53:00
Been a slow winter bass fishing for me this winter, the weather has been great, but time commitments have made it near impossible as of late.  I had not caught a Minnesota bass since November!  On the bright side, I did make a November trip to Lake of the Ozarks, a December trip to Lake Falcon & caught a Sailfish in Playa del Carmen, so I am guessing I will not get many sympathy comments from the faithful blog readers.Even with all that, I was feeling some urgency to get my first 2012 bass under my belt and the Minnesota bass season closes at end of February for awhile, so my window was shrinking.  So against my better judgement I set out for some fishing this past Sunday in weather temps that I would normally pass on, 14 degrees with wind chill of 1.It ended up being not too bad other then not being able to feel my hands and fingers after touching wet fish a few times.  I ended up with 16 smallmouth, mostly 2-3lb chunky fish, all came on a Shakey Beaver comb...

Facebook Finally Acknowledges That It Faces Competition: But Who Has Better
2012-02-03 07:57:00
Facebook is ready to make history with the biggest ever IPO in American history. Interestingly, while filing the paperwork with the SEC, Facebook acknowledged some other tech heavyweights as its competitors. And who are these competitors? Google, Microsoft and Twitter. Nothing surprising. Facebook clearly has an advantage over these other companies in terms of social networking. While filing with SEC, Facebook released the following statement:“We face significant competition in almost every aspect of our business, including from companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Twitter, which offer a variety of Internet products, services, content, and online advertising offerings, as well as from mobile companies and smaller Internet companies that offer products and services that may compete with specific Facebook features.” As expected, Facebook singled out Google as it main competitor. “We compete broadly with Google’s social networking offerings, including Goog...

Banks & Internet Companies Are Teaming Up Against Spam. Finally!
2012-01-30 12:59:00
Spammers are the party-poopers when it comes to the Internet. Yes, the web helps us in discovering new information, connecting with other people and increasing our productivity. This has been going for a long time since the advent of the Internet but no one has come close to removing this threat and annoyance from the web in its entirety. Cyber Criminals always seem to be one step ahead. Even Google has not yet perfected its algorithm to detect and filter spam which is why we still end up with some ‘Lottery Winner’ mail in my inbox. The cases of spam, e-mail scams, phishing and general online malpractices are on the rise in India and the world and for once everyone is concerned about it. Some of the biggest Internet companies are teaming up with banks and coming up with a new approach to battling spam online. Banks are involved in this because majority of these cyber-criminals pose fraudulently as banks when they are sending out their ‘phishing’ emails. A person’s bank a...

Amazon Might Finally Make An Entry In India Via Their Marketplace
2012-01-23 08:24:00
We have been wondering for some time now about Amazon’s plan for India. Seeing how two former Amazon executives have managed to build up Flipkart by doing what Amazon does best and adapting it to the Indian market, we were sure that Amazon would not keep quiet. For many months Amazon was very tight lipped about its entry into the country but now it seems they might actually start operations in the country very soon. For those excited about the fact that they will bring their flagship online store to the country, then you will be a bit disappointed. They are just setting up the Amazon Marketplace where 3rd party retailers can sell their stuff through Amazon’s channel.     Amazon Marketplace is thus getting into deals with many online retailers so that they only sell their wares through the ‘Community’ Marketplace. Amazon will reportedly not charge the retailers a commission on the stuff sold. Apparently, they have been studying the Indian business landscape and d...

More than three years have passed since the onset of the 2008 financial crisis, and the economic downturn feels like it may never end. Optimism had run high that 2011 would see a sustainable economic upswing. But those hopes were dashed by a nasty combination of the euro zone debt crisis, spiking food and oil ...

Facebook Timeline Finally Comes To Android And iPhone.
2011-12-19 12:02:00
Timeline as a concept was introduced a few months ago by Zuckerberg at the annual F8 summit. The timeline service could be activated by developers and those who wanted to get the preview and it was recently pushed out last week for all Facebook users. The mobile apps also received an UI overhaul some weeks ago. Now, Facebook has managed to sync in all the corners and released the timeline feature on mobile OS’s like Android and iOS.The timeline was accessible in iPhone and Android but only if you used Facebook’s mobile site. Now with the timeline on Facebook’s official app, it is much easier to change and add things like photos, videos and updates on your timeline while being on the go. The app implementation of the timeline while generally being in sync with the desktop version differs in a few ways. To make optimum use of the smaller screen space, the timeline is made up of a single column instead of the two columns as seen in the desktop version. General consensus is that t...

Facebook Timeline Finally Officially Rolling Out!
2011-12-07 08:12:00
The world’s largest Social Network aka Facebook, which may be valued at over $100 billion, is notorious for constantly changing layouts on their web page. Normally, this isn’t too big of a deal, but considering millions of people use their site several times a day, when Facebook changes their layout there is always a lot of consternation and complaining about it being confusing and how people preferred the older layout. However, Facebook’s Timeline feature was the one such layout where almost everyone reacted positively to. Unveiled in September, Facebook Timeline replaces the Profile page and lets you view posts from years and years ago. It is a more logical method of organizing one’s data and most people were looking forward to it. It was scheduled to launch in October but for some reason was delayed. We now have word from the official Facebook Blog that Timeline has started officially rolling out. Timeline will no longer be a Beta and within the next few...

Twitter’s Long-Awaited Self-Serve Ad Platform Finally Sees The Light Of D
2011-12-05 07:04:00
Twitter has been around for over five years now. Since its launch in 2006, social network/social media experts have been predicting that Twitter is the ‘next-big-thing’. But sadly, either because of the Facebook onslaught or because of mismanagement, Twitter has not really realized its full potential. One of the main concerns has been Twitter’s monetization process. Unlike Facebook, Twitter does not seem to be including much advertisement on the site.   Can Twitter really be monetized? What are the other avenues of commercial usage of the platform? In April 2010, Twitter announced that they are planning to launch an advertising platform which would allow just about anyone to take advantage of Promoted Products. Finally, Twitter has made the self-serve advertising platform live. Currently, only a select group of advertisers will have access to this platform and depending on its performance and feedback the platform will be opened up to the public. Twitter’s approach to adver...

Twitter Acquires Whisper Systems: Is Twitter Finally Getting Serious About
2011-11-29 10:47:00
Twitter is not considered to be the most secure social networking environment by experts. Recently, Chris Soghoian (a privacy researcher) reiterated the fact that Twitter has been lackadaisical in its data protection and security attempts. 2009 was the big year for Twitter, in terms of security breaches to the site. Early that year the micro-blogging network was hacked twice and user information was jeopardized. This year Twitter finally settled that issue with the Federal Trade Commission. At the back of these developments comes the news that Twitter has acquired a mobile security start up called Whisper Systems. Well known hacker and security expert, Moxie Marlinspike, is one half of the duo behind Whisper Systems. Whisper Systems is known for its security software products for smartphones and other mobile devices. Twitter has been gung-ho about the mobile platform in the recent past. Accessing the micro-blogging site from a mobile device has become a smoother experience and the...

Google+ Brand Pages Go Live; Finally A Serious Threat To Facebook?
2011-11-09 10:14:00
Everyone knew this was coming but no one guessed when. Google has finally given green light to businesses to set up profiles on its social network.  So far Google+ has focused on connecting people with other people, Google SVP of Social Vic Gundotra said in a blog post, “we want to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about €”from local businesses to global brands €”so today we a€™re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide“.  Google+ pages look same as the profiles except a small square beside the name that which acts as a differentiator. Google’s launch partners include Angry Birds, CNN, Fox News, the Muppets, the Dallas Cowboys, Pepsi, Toyota, Macy’s, X Games, WWE, Train, Barcelona Football Club and Save the Children.  User can add a brand to their circle which will increase brand’s follower count and will give users the option to follow brand updates and other shared content. Qualcomm’s Entry In India Finally Confirmed
2011-10-19 12:00:00
American wireless telecommunications research and development company, Qualcomm’s bid to enter India’s Wireless Broadband Access (WBA) space has been finally approved by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT). However, Qualcomm had to drag DoT to Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) in order to secure the License. Qualcomm had “secured” broadband wireless access (BWA) license in Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala circles through a bidding process last year, only to be refuted. That refusal was going to cost Qualcomm nearly INR 5,000 Crores (USD 1 Billion) it had paid for its permits to be an Internet Service Provider (ISP)!                           Though DoT had claimed numerous discrepancies like, not submitting the application on time & appointing 4 subsidiaries, whereas it should nominate only one; all the allegations were scrapped by TDSAT Qualcomm is not a new player in India...

India has made itself known for its cheaper-than-anywhere-else products. From the Rs. 1 Lac Nano, Rs. 750 Water Cooler to the Rs. 1 Lac Open Heart Surgery. Now another product will join those ranks. It started out as a $35 PC,  a project by the HRD meant to bring computing to the masses. However, the project evolved into a textbook reader and finally, a tablet. Last scheduled to launch by July 2011 with the name ‘Sakshat‘, the device has again surfaced. This time it is known by the name ‘Akash‘. A company called Datawind, known for their Rs. 8000 netbook UbiSurfer, has produced 100,000 of these tablets and sold them to the Government of India. The government in turn will sell these units to educational institutions around the country. Said Kapil Sibal at the Delhi Launch event, “To every child in India I carry this message. Twitter Finally Gets 1600 Advertisers; It Is The Beginning Of A New Revolut
2011-10-05 13:45:00
Up till last year, people were at a loss as to how the social networking giant would bring in the moolah. Twitter in essence is a real-time search engine and the number of people on the service is massive and this sometimes results in an outage because their infrastructure cannot keep up. The service is free and there was no way brands could advertise earlier. Then sometime last year they started ‘Promoted Tweets’ and finally we could see that advertising had a potential on the website. Twitter’s Chief Revenue Officer, Adam Bain recently spoke at IAB’s Mixx Conference yesterday and shared some of the milestones that the service has reached recently. These milestones all have to do with the advertising aspect of Twitter. According to Bain, the number of advertisers on the platform have reached to an all time high of 1600 and the retention rate is somewhere around 80%. Back in July, CEO Dick Costolo confirmed that the number of Twitter advertisers have risen by 6...

The Official Flickr App For Android Is Finally Here And It Shows Promise

Flickr is not just a tool for the serious photographer. Amateur photographers and enthusiasts can also make great use of this service and it competes with services like Picasa and Facebook photos. It has also added a slew of new features over the years.  A mobile app for this service is the best way to share the photos that you click on your phone. So far, Flickr only had an official iPhone app but not for Android causing users to go to third party providers. This dilemma has now been solved by Yahoo as it released an official Android client for Flickr.         All in all, it is a very decent app and it works very smoothly. The only drawback with this app is that you cannot add the pictures to ‘sets’ which helps to distinguish between you mobile pics and the ones taken from your digital camera. You can grab this app from the Android Market for free. When you search for the app from your phone, please make sure that the app is published by Yahoo I...

2011-06-28 15:35:00
The Case Shiller Home Price Index for April just came out a few minutes ago and for the first time in many months there are positive signs in the numbers for Chicago. A lot of people must have been interested in these numbers because the S&P servers crashed for 11 minutes after the release of the data. Single family home prices in Chicago fell only slightly from March - down only 0.4%, which is a smaller decline than we've been seeing lately. However, the big news was the condo prices in Chicago were actually up from April by 2.4% - the first increase in condo prices since July of last year. Since then condo prices have been falling like...

Democrats FINALLY Talking of Cutting Back Govt Employee Pensions

The GOP has already targeted these pensions by proposing that federal workers contribute more toward their own pension benefits. White Sox Finally Back to Winning, But Is It Too Late?

The White Sox have become watchable again. After a miserable past couple months that landed the Sox in the bottom of the AL Central, they have won 4 of 6 and at least look like they are finally back on track. I realize 4 out of 6 is not something most teams should be jumping up and down about, but for the White Sox, it is. Nearly everything that could go wrong for the Sox this season has. It has been a combination of underachieving, injuries, bad luck and bounces, and just plain bad baseball. This is not something new for the Sox. Just last season they found themselves in the bottom of the division early in the year, only...

This one is a gear fest for all you pedal fanatics out there- if you suffer from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) run away now!! I just got a Pedaltrain Pro board from a really cool guy on Ebay. I've been looking for one for ages and found an amazing deal last week. As you can see in the pic below I needed the Pro version as I've crammed TONS of pedals onto this thing. It may seem like complete overkill but all of these pedals sound so good through the Port City Pearl (www.portcityamps.com) that I can't leave any of them off. At the moment the Suhr pedals and the BB preamp aren't wired up but I've ordered some custom patch cables to get those in the remaining free loops of the Octa-Switch. The De-Delay will eventually be placed in the last loop with the Toadworks Redux and Strymon Blue Sky Reverb. full post

The Bulls tried a little of both in the first round, but couldn't seem to exterminate the annoying Pacers. Finally, the Bulls bought a fly zapper, set it up in the UC, and killed off the pesky Getty Images/ Yahoo eight seed. This match-up couldn't help but remind of a blood sucking mosquito following me around and begging for a taste. These Pacers were annoying, dirty, and I am glad to see the Bulls send them home. Northwestern won its first postseason game in 17 years on Wednesday night 70-61 over Milwaukee in an odd fashion. It wasn't that Wildcats made more threes, even though they did 12 to 11, or committed fewer turnovers, though they did that too 16 to 11, it was offensive rebounding and free throw shooting that carried them. The Wildcats had their third best offensive rebounding game of the year, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds which equated to 44.4% of their misses. Percentage wise it was topped only by efforts against Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, decidedly inferior opponents....
Google Is About To Overhaul Blogger, Finally!

Kim wrote in blogpost, “We introduced template designer, real-time stats, comments spam filtering, mobile templates, web fonts, and more. 2011 promises to be another exciting year.” Blogger is getting a complete overhaul. This comes after its last major redesign, back in 2004.
