Binding Arbitration = Financial Collapse of Business Sector
2008-07-15 12:46:00
-By Warner Todd Huston We are reminded here on the blog that there is one aspect of the lie that is the Employee Free Choice Act bill that isn’t much discussed. That is the binding arbitration feature of this business/economy killing legislation. Besides the card check aspect where a union can dispense with the ages old ...
More Friday Financial Follies
2008-07-11 12:04:00
I?m definitely not an economist, but here?s how the markets seem to work (as nearly as I can get this); our weak dollar pushes up the price of oil, and when the price of oil hits a new record (sending oil futures soaring), the Dow Jones tanks, as it's doing again today. Other bad financial news impacts that also, of course, including unemployment statistics, as well as questions about whether Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac will need a bailout, as is apparently the case as well.Where am I going with this? Well, this is actually a setup to a comment about this column from Kimberly A. Strassel of the Wall Street Journal in which she more or less compliments Dick Durbin (as much as anyone from the WSJ would compliment a Democrat, which is with faint praise of course) over his ?hands off? actions towards the futures markets, which are based in Chicago (and Durbin being one of the two senators from Illinois; perhaps you?ve heard of the other one? Hint: He bailed on FISA a couple of days ago)?...

Are we in a perfect financial storm?
2008-06-24 18:12:00
Video: Are we heading for a perfect financial storm? I’m betting that the economy gets better almost immediately after the election is over. Things were bad in 1980, 1992, 2000 so 2008 is probably not much different than what we’ve experienced in the past. Post from: Christopher Hedges Are we in a perfect financial storm?
Very cool (FREE) financial tracking/budgeting tool!!!
2008-06-11 06:09:00
I recently ran across a VERY cool financial planning/budgeting tool and thought I would share it with you. It paints a very clear picture of your finances and the best part is that it is FREE and online! There's nothing to download, update, etc. and your data is available anywhere with internet! I've been playing with it for several days now and, basically, it goes out whenever you log-in and pulls data from your checking and savings accounts, your credit cards, your investment accounts and more. Then, it makes the data all easy to see, either as individual accounts or combining all of your accounts/transactions into one view. It further breaks all of the transactions down into categories and even charts your spending! Have you ever wondered how much you spend at coffee shops or on gas? How about on fast food or shopping? This tool will tell you... Have you ever wondered if there were better credit cards with better interest rates and/or reawrds? This...

Ex-champ Holyfield apparently having tough financial times
2008-06-10 09:10:00
Maybe now we know why former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield wants to keep fighting at age 45. The “Real Deal” appears real broke. His $10 million estate in suburban Atlanta is under foreclosure, the mother of one of his children is suing for unpaid child support, and a Utah consulting company has gone to court claiming the boxer failed to pay back more than a half million dollars for landscaping.

The Financial Door Swings Both Ways Posted By : Darren Cason

Taking a proactive approach to paying off your credit card debt is like making a great investment decision. We would all love to find a stock or investment strategy that returned us 15-20% interest; well this is the type of savings you can achieve by paying down that credit debt. That last time I used my credit card, I kicked myself. You see, I'm trying out this whole negative reinforcement thing. Anyway, the point is that we should try not to spend so much and start saving more. Maybe what's in order is a financial planning education course. Read more about finance and credit cards.

How many years have you used credit cards? Are you facing any problems with the use of charge cards? Setting financial goals helps direct financial planning. Examples of financial goals are: "To retire at age 50 with a personal net worth of $800,000 American," or "To buy a house in 3 years paying a monthly mortgage servicing cost that is no more than 25% of my gross income". It is not uncommon to have several goals, some short term, and some long term. Read more about finance.

A Stupid Financial Mistake...A Big One Is Looming for The Unwary As Structu
2008-06-05 21:10:00
The intrinsic value of  your existing structured settlement will likely increase over the next 4 years regardless of who is the next President of the United States, John McCain or Barack Obama. To best part is that to get this increase in value you don't have to do anything except keep receiving your payments as you always have. Does anyone believe that taxes will NOT increase in next 2-4 years? Whether you are receiving a structured settlement as a result of the settlement of and payment of damages in a physical injury, wrongful death case,  or a workers compensation claim, such payments are excludable from gross income under the Internal Revenue Code  (IRC 104(a)(1) for workers compensation and IRC 104(a)(2) for personal physical injury). Excludable from gross income means income tax free. Investing the same amount of money at the same interest rate will result in a dramatic difference in your bottom line because of the tax leverage. A 6% tax free rate is th...

Vietnam may be heading towards financial crisis
2008-06-05 02:47:00
Vietnam may be heading towards financial crisis  Inflation, trade deficit, banking blow-up threaten what was recently hailed the darling of investors By Bryan Lee, Economics Correspondent & Roger Mitton, Vietnam Correspondent    FEARS are rising that Vietnam may be headed for a financial meltdown after a rapid reversal of its economic fortunes. A heady mix of runaway inflation, a ballooning trade deficit and a possible banking sector blow-up is sparking a growing cacophony of warnings by economists. They say Vietnam, recently the darling of international investors as an emerging ‘tiger’ economy, is at risk of a severe crisis, as overheating symptoms emerge similar to those seen before Thailand’s 1997 crash. Many predict a steep fall in the country’s currency - the dong - is all but inevitable. Some say external help, possibly from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), may be needed to restore economic confidence. Until recent gravely worrying economic...
The Perfect Home is a Financial Nightmare - Don?t Get Caught Up In the Cost
2008-06-04 19:56:00
It is very easy to get sucked in a terribly expensive effort which never really ends My wife and I just returned from our 203th visit to IKEA with some interesting insights I?d like to share. Since we?ve bought our apartment and renovated it we?ve been caught up in a continuing effort to furnish and design it into our perfect little home. All this time a very obvious yet elusive insight eluded us: There?s no end to this effort, no finish line to the race. It starts very early on. You decide to buy a house, maybe even decide on a budget but all the plans and all the decisions soon fade away when you start shopping for a one. It?s understandable. Some locations, architecture and design, extra rooms and more may be well worth the extra money but have you ever heard of anyone buying a cheaper house than they initially planned on?It continues with massive, endless renovations trying to shape reality to dreams with multi-million homes as our inspiration. Even the world?s best interior des...

According to the filing, Mr. McMahon was then about $644,000 in arrears on the loan. The home is currently listed for sale at $5.75 million. It's been on the market for two years. Tax Planning For the End-of-Financial-Year
2008-06-04 02:56:00
Many businesses fail to plan their tax position for the end-of-financial-year, so they may miss out on optimising their tax position. By keeping accurate and up-to-date accounting records, you know the financial position of your business. Thus you can take advantage of the various actions and choices to put you in the best possible position regarding tax payments or tax liability. This is why choosing the right accountant and bookkeeping system is so important, and the old ’shoebox’ system is no longer viable. The Taxman Cometh! As the ATO widens the scope of its audit activity, the chances of a taxation audit get stronger every year, and are highest among those whose tax returns reveal that: declared income is below the average for their industry or occupation, there’s unusual or apparently large claims, particularly relating to work or rental property expenditure deductions that are above their industry or occupation average If your bookkeeping is not in order...

One More Reason To Bet Against Financial Firms
2008-06-02 22:06:00
If you follow the markets at all you are probably familiar with the current debate over the financial firms, like Lehman Brothers and others. The two camps line up roughly like this: the bulls say that all the bad news is behind us, The Fed has pretty much guaranteed that they will bail out a bank rather than let it fail and they still have ways to make money. The bears say that the financials are full of shit, that you can't believe anything they say when it comes to their finacial positions and that any single one of them is liable to go out of business overnight, or at least fall 90% before someone steps in to try and save them.I think you know where I sit; firmly in the camp of the bears. Why? Because when I read articles like this I just know, for sure, that there are losses being hidden and we are nowhere near the end of the credit crisis. From the story:Merrill Lynch & Co., Citigroup Inc. and four other U.S. financial companies have used an accounting rule adopted last year t...
