Fins and Fiberglass: The Futura J
2009-04-02 07:01:00 While I was out combating the flu (it had guns and knives and swords; I had tissues. It was a bit of a lopsided battle), our pal Geoff Hacker was busy headed out and coming back from Amelia Island, but found the time to forward us a link to some photos of an unusual Henry J-based kit car meant

Fins Shopping JT
2008-04-24 00:26:00 I guess this was to be expected. At least the Dolphins aren't going to give him up easily. If Chris Chambers can demand a 2nd round pick on the market, then surely Jason Taylor merits a 1st or at least a 2nd and a 4th. Trading JT would mean the end of the old Dolphins era--- the one that won so many games in the late 90s and early 2000s, but never enjoyed any playoff success. That's fine. He deserves to move on to greener pastures at this point. A 1st round pick in return would be fair and would put the organization in a position to continue to improve this roster.Jake Long is the first step. A mid-1st round pick could turn into a guy like Brian Brohm (if they are interested) or the Talib kid from Kansas. There are dozens of players that would fill needs for the Dolphins in the late first round. We'll likely scoop one up with the 32nd pick, but getting an additional one would let us play around with our options. Groves in the 2nd, maybe Lawrence Jackson (the guy I really like). M...

Fins Prediction...
2008-04-15 21:53:00 ...They're gonna stink. Today the new schedule was released and it looks alright. Having the worst team last year gave us easy games against last place teams, but we still have a long way to go. I'll make an official prediction game-by-game after the draft. We can't really know what the deal is yet. Here's the schedule if you guys are interested. We have 5 home games in 6 weeks, but also finish off the season with 4 road games in 5 weeks. Pretty balanced schedule. Thankfully no road game at New England in December. We also play the Bills in the much-anticipated Toronto game. It would be a shame to see a fanbase lose out on it's franchise (the Sonics situation is pretty depressing), but screw the Bills.

MicroRNAs Help Zebrafish Regenerate Fins
2008-03-24 12:11:00 Biologists have discovered a molecular circuit breaker that controls a zebrafish's remarkable ability to regrow missing fins, according to a new study from Duke University Medical Center।Tiny wonders of the aquarium world, zebrafish can regenerate organs and tissues, including hearts, eye parts and fins. When a fin is lost, the fish regenerates a perfect copy in two weeks by orchestrating the growth of many tissue types, including bone, nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue and skin.Scientists hope that understanding how zebrafish repair themselves will lead to new treatments for human conditions caused by damaged tissue, such as heart failure, diabetes and spinal cord injuries. The regeneration regulator is one of a group of recently discovered molecules called microRNAs: small pieces of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that each can potentially control the activity of dozens of different genes. In humans, microRNAs play important roles in cell growth and death, among other functions. T...
In U.S. court fight, the shark fins win

Whale fins inspire more efficient fans.
2008-03-06 16:44:00 Toronto-based WhalePower Corp. is using the fins of humpback whales to help design a better fan (and, hopefully, wind turbine). US scientists discovered some time ago that the little bumps on the Humpback whale's fins result in less drag and better lift when compared to a smooth fin. A fan blade with similar bumps makes the fan quieter, more efficient, and better at pushing down air, according to Envira-North, the company that has licensed the WhalePower design. Fans using WhalePower's design could use 20 percent less energy, and now that fans are incorporating the design, WhalePower will continue to work to apply the idea to wind turbines.

A Successful Gluten Free Master Baking Mix -and- Mini Donut Hole Muffins
2008-02-09 17:00:00 Last month, I received an email from a wonderful reader named Peggy. She had tried my "all-purpose" baking mix I first posted last month and said that it tasted bitter to her. She had tried it in several recipes and while they were good, they had an aftertaste that she and her family didn't like.Thankfully Peggy was kind enough to email me and let me know about what happened when she made the mixture. I am always appreciative of readers who let me know how my recipes turn out. I have no way of knowing if it actually works for others unless I receive feedback!Peggy was also patient enough to try the recipe again after we adjusted certain ingredients. So after several emails with Peggy discussing what could be wrong, we lowered the amounts of baking soda and baking powder (realizing we didn't need nearly as much as I originally called for in the mix) and Peggy added additional white rice flour to her mix and it worked perfectly! She emailed me again when it came out right, and I wa...

Muffins by Moonlight
2008-02-05 17:32:00 My little cutie came down with the flu (despite getting a flu shot), so plans are on hold for the day.The combination of being up most of the night, and Nicky sleeping more by day means that I?ve had some time for baking therapy. I will get to some enlightened chocolate recipes for Valentine?s Day soon (the truffles are coming, the truffles are coming!), but in my current state, it?s all about comfort baking. Few things are better. It has always been my belief that, at the end of the day (and in the middle of a sleepless night, for that matter), what most people want in the way of home cooked food is something consoling and uncomplicated.Enter the muffin, the most democratic of baked goods. Muffins are amenable to both state-of-the-art and cubby-hole kitchens. Cooks who have studied cooking for years find as much joy in whipping up a batch of muffins as completely green cooks, and fussy toddlers, cranky teenagers and weary adults are comforted by them. Most muffin recipes are variatio...

Muffins amaretti&cioccolato
2008-01-21 20:45:00 Ovvero l'apoteosi di uno stato di grazia!Ma quanto tempo era che la Ietti non si metteva di buona lena ai fornelli per preparare qualsiasi cosa che potesse essere vagamente commestibile? Lucky Comestible I: Mini Sweet Potato and Chocolate Chip Muffins
2008-01-21 15:02:00 [I thought it would be fun to start a little series over here at DDD: the series will profile one one of my favorite foods, or a food that I’ve recently discovered and enjoyed, over several days. For this first entry, I’ll be focusing on Sweet Potatoes. The series will be presented on an occasional (and entirely arbitrary) basis, before I move on to the next lucky comestible. ] Let’s just say that my mother was not an overly adventurous cook. She habitually repeated the same six or seven dishes over and over, with the occasional new recipe from Family Circle, my aunt, or someone in her Mah Jong group thrown in on occasion. So we were treated to salmon patties and potato boats (called “twice-baked potatoes” these days), hamburgers with mashed potatoes, grilled cheese sandwiches, or tuna salad over cucumber, tomato, and iceberg lettuce on a rotating basis. Fresh fish? Forget it. Artichokes? Don’t make me gag. Fresh herbs? ...

Banana Soy Muffins with pomegranate pear syrup
2008-01-19 20:11:00 Weekend Breakfast Blogging had my attention over the last couple of days - after the soy pancakes turned out great, I really wanted to make another soy-based breakfast recipe. Kind of hard to work primarily with soy flour though - it has no gluten content, which means no elasticity and there is no assistance during fermentation which is what helps the bread rise when baking. In addition to these, gluten helps keep the shape of the bread since it firms up when cooked. Gluten resources for those interested:Gluten on WikipediaGluten composition in cereals and gluten diseaseGluten free recipes Anyway, after poking around several cookbooks and sites, I couldn't quite find any cake or bread recipe that didn't use a combination of soy flour with either wheat or rice or triticum flour. Oh well, guess I just had to try it out - and hope that the end result is somewhat edible. I decided to play it safe and try a banana muffin recipe with soy flour. And to make things even simpler, I mic...

Savoury Muffins with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Cottage Cheese(Paneer)
2008-01-14 16:22:00 When we think about comfort foods, we tend to give in a bit more towards chocolate or desserts, but for some of us, savoury dishes go more towards comforting our palettes than sweet ones. I am one of those with a huge sweet tooth, and almost always give in to my dessert temptations; but lately, I'm trying to extend my skills by experimenting a lot more with new spices and herbs, and combining classic ingredients in a contemporary style to create a savoury tantalizing dish. This weekend, I decided to realize one of my whims - I'm a huge fan of muffins, and so I thought why not make a Savoury Muffin! when Indians think of comfort food, 9 people out of 10 zero in on "Paneer", or Cottage-cheese. So I too chose paneer as my main ingredient, then started adding other stuff, some inspired by my sense of taste and smell, some purely by instinct, and some simply because they are favorites!:) So what things finally made it into my muffins?? well, it was mainly Sun-dried tomatoes, cottage-ch...

Warm Chocolate Muffins with Chocolate Sauce and Fresh Strawberries
2008-01-08 20:36:00 As life gets busier and work get more demanding day by day, its easy to resort to "semi-homemade" and "30-minute" meals for preparing our dinners. A full-time engineer myself, I know how difficult it can get at times when you have to sacrifice a gym session just because you still have to cook, and its inviting to gather the semi-cooked ingredients and spend less time cooking, at the same time still winning loads of compliments for your culinary skills(yeah, who knows I used something right off the shelf!:)) But as a cook, I can say that most of the joy and satisfaction that I derive from cooking is in the actual process, making something from scratch, trying out variations and methods, the smells and flavors that fill up my kitchen, getting involved as the delicacy takes shape, form, color and texture in the oven or on the stove, and finally, taking that extra step to make my meal more attractive and appealing! The joy of these small wonders can't compare to the packaged food! Yest...

Pear and Ginger Mini Loaves or Muffins
2008-01-03 15:35:00 Necessity is the mother of many a new recipe in our house. Because there are only the two of us (humans) living here (”Don’t forget about us, Mum!“), it’s usually fairly easy to decide what to have for dinner, or what to buy at the grocery store. My HH and I share many a similar taste, except for all that animal flesh he eats, and we even enjoy cooking together whenever we do cook (which seems to be less and less frequently these days, come to think of it). One thing we have in common is an apathetic response to pears. I crave a fresh pear probably twice a year–no connection to any other event or season; it’s just something that happens, and then I eat a pear. When I do bite into it, I do appreciate all its lush juiciness, smooth, aromatic flesh and the little-known fibre boost it supplies. Pears wouldn’t be a problem over here, except that we are also the happy recipients of a weekly organic fruit and vegetable box. When I’m...

Biodegradable Coffins Rise Up
2007-12-27 06:48:00 Share on StumbleUpon: Cynthia Beal wants to be an Oregon cherry tree after she dies. She has everything to make it happen — a body, a burial site and a biodegradable coffin."It is composting at its best," said Beal, owner of The Natural Burial Company, which will sell a variety of eco-friendly burial products when it opens in January, including the Ecopod, a kayak-shaped coffin made out of recycled newspapers. |
