It is particularly apt since the coach builder's aim is to give customers a luxury sports sedan about which they can feel proud for what it does, or doesn't do, to the environment. The Karma is powered by what's being called Q-DRIVE, a system developed by Quantum Technologies that combines a four-cylinder engine sending power to a generator to propel the four-door sedan. Fisker claims that the Karma can run from zero to sixty in 5.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 125 mph.

2008-01-28 01:16:00 At the Detroit Auto Show, Henrik Fisker finally unveiled the Karma, the plug-in hybrid electric car he hopes to start selling in 2009. Actually what was unveiled was a curvaceous four door styling buck. There are no mechanical components. According to Fisker reps, there won't be a running prototype of the Karma until the end of 2008. When asked not much was available in terms of technical details. A little digging around has turned up some clues about what might be coming. Fisker's specialty is styling, not mechanicals. For that skillset he has formed a partnership with Quantum Technologies. Quantum however is not known for developing powertrains, they have specialized in compressed gas fuel storage systems. A couple of years ago Quantum purchased Tecstar, a company with some experience in powertrain development. In the realm of plug-in hybrids one problem that must be addressed is batteries. Developed in cooperation with Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, the project is a first for the independent automaker. Most hybrids either look identical to their gasoline counterparts (think Chevy Tahoe) or they have somewhat quirky designs that appeal to a specific demographic (think Toyota Prius). But the Karma is different — it was designed from the ground up as a sexy performance sedan. It should come as no surprise that Fisker's founder, Henrik Fisker, designed the Aston Martin DB9 and BMW Z8. Normally known for building rebodied Mercedes-Benz and BMW cars, Fisker says the new "eco-chic" vehicles will not be built on an existing platform, but rather a brand new architecture. It was on the last day of October, but still. The difference is that now we got to oooh and aaah over this expensive and sleek (and I'm tempted to say shark-like, because that's what it reminded me of) PHEV hybrid in person after the curtain dropped this afternoon.
