2008-05-15 18:35:00 Fisker fights back in Tesla lawsuit Fisker Coachbuild is fighting back a lawsuit brought against it by Tesla as the Henrik Fisker-run company has asked a California court for arbitration. The request was filed on Tuesday, May 13, with a hearing scheduled for June 11. Tesla filed its lawsuit against Fisker on April 14. In the suit, Tesla claims that Fisker stole trade secrets and designed an inferior product. Tesla hired Fisker to design its WhiteStar sedan, but says Fisker left them with a sub-par design — especially when compared to the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sedan. Fisker denies the allegations, even calling it "a ridiculous suit," according to Automotive News. In other Fisker news, the automaker says that its Karma sedan is on schedule for production — as evidenced by the latest spy shots. Fisker has taken 500 pre-orders for the plug-in hybrid and is preparing to unveil the car's production interior at November's Los Angeles Auto Show.

It is particularly apt since the coach builder's aim is to give customers a luxury sports sedan about which they can feel proud for what it does, or doesn't do, to the environment. The Karma is powered by what's being called Q-DRIVE, a system developed by Quantum Technologies that combines a four-cylinder engine sending power to a generator to propel the four-door sedan. Fisker claims that the Karma can run from zero to sixty in 5.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 125 mph.

Power Roundtable in San Francisco this week. The model will go on sale around the same time as the sedan, Fisker said. That means both models should hit the market in late 2009, according to estimates. The automaker did not provide a name for the new model, Automotive News says. However, we wouldn't rule out both models wearing the Karma badge. The Karma sedan made its debut at the Detroit auto show last month. Powered by a Q-Drive drivetrain, the car promises to sprint to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, yet be capable of delivering 100 miles to the gallon and traveling 50 miles on batteries alone. Fisker announces a four-seat plug-in hybrid convertible

Following a positive reception to his Karma plug-in hybrid at the Detroit Auto Show, Fisker showed off the first picture of a two-door, four-seat convertible at the J.D. Power Roundtable in San Francisco today, according to Automotive News (subs req'd). That little picture is not all we know about this car, as Fisker said it will use the same PHEV powertrain as the Karma and will be available at around the same time (i.e., late 2009). If you've got an Automotive News subscription, you can see a larger version of the image above on the AN site. While the Karma has four-doors, there is a lot of styling carryover between the two vehicles (based on this one image). The wheels, grille, and body shape all look similar. The Karma — which Fisker is hoping will be the first plug-in hybrid to market that uses lithium-ion batteries — was introduce earlier this month in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show. According to Vic Doolan, Fisker's director of retail development, metro Detroit could be the ideal location to produce the Karma because of its available capacity, experienced workforce and proximity to suppliers. While no location has been selected yet, Doolan told the Detroit Free Press that a Michigan production facility "does make a lot of sense." As we shared with our readers a while back, coachbuilder Fisker is planning to show off a new unique hybrid model at the next Detroit Auto Show this January. While we unfortunately still don't have any photos to show you, we are expecting the car to be quite a looker, based on other vehicles that Fisker has rolled out. Too bad the low-volumes that we expect this car will sell at are not likely to make a big dent in the cost of the technology. Oh well, we are all excited to hear about the Volt's likely production status, and the Fisker should be on the radar for those who like the technology but would never be caught dead driving a Chevy. The car in question is a 2007 Fisker Latigo CS V10 coupe, number one out of an exclusive run of just 150 cars. The Latigo line of cars is based on the BMW 6-series family, with the CS V10 model running on the mechanicals of a donor M6. Power levels have been boosted to 648hp, which enables the super-coupe to reach 60mph from rest in just 3.9 seconds.
