Which is the Prettiest Village in Flanders?
2008-05-15 15:58:00
Wat is het mooiste dorp van Vlaanderen? Voting takes place online from 19 April to 28 May at www.mooistedorp.be. The short list comprises 15 villages, 3 per province. Here in Limburg we have nominations for Gors-Op-Leeuw, Oud-Rekem and Kanne. Oud-Rekem was chosen as the prettiest village in Limburg and as Limburg is generally considered to be the most beautiful province in Vlaanderen, could we safely say that Oud-Rekem will win overall?

Rich Flanders – Yondering: Songs of the American West
2008-05-13 15:43:00
In his web site biography, Rich Flanders claims, “I’m not a cowboy, and I don’t own that big spread on the far side of the divide.†But after listening to Yondering: Songs of the American West, some might be convinced otherwise, as Flanders clearly has a deep, intimate relationship with the old west. His renditions of ...

Do It For Ned Flanders
2008-04-22 15:27:00
The current tournament over at NHL Logos is between goalies for the best mask.  Peter Budaj is facing Henrik Lundqvist in the first round and it's super close.  Too close.  As of this posting, Budaj has a 35 vote lead (1229 to 1193).   Do your part and vote for him.  Remember, his mask is awesome.  He's got Ned Flanders on the back and the character from Assassin's Creed on both sides, which is nerdfully cool.

Rumble: Ostend, once more.
2008-02-14 19:34:00
The "Sea Men?s Monument" (Willy Kreitz, 1951) in Ostend, commemorates all those lost at sea. While the sailor standing at the top of the monument looks over the sea confidently, with almost a challenging attitude, the one at the bottom of the pillar mourns for his lost colleagues.Every Easter Monday, the town holds a procession to this monument honouring the victims of the sea, an event culmulating in the blessing of the sea by a priest? Traditional hedon practices in a catholic coat, with a folkloric gravy. ;-)The monument is erected right where Ostend?s first lighthouse was built, back in 1771:View Larger Map
Rumble: My Home Town
2008-02-13 20:42:00
I am still looking at the pictures we took last weekend, during our evening walk along Flander's coast...I was born and raised in Ostend, and left only after I graduated, at the age of 23. But I always come back, even if it was only for the sea. She has always attracted me. The scent of the silt, the mighty power and potential to harm or kill at any moment. Yet endlessly beautiful, inspiring and gracious. Ever changing colours and behaviour, changing moods in a flash.Maybe it was the sense of endlessness, the travel, "leaving but never knowing when you would come back" which always attracted me to the sea. Or the freedom. Just take off in a boat and... go!This boardwalk ("staketsel" in Flemish), runs along the entrance of the port, once busy with a active fishing fleet, cargo vessels and ferries to England. Every so often, a large vessel looses control over its helm, and rams the boardwalk, chewing out a whole piece. And every time, it is repaired. As a kid, we used to climb from t...
Bible inspiration clock: Shut Up Flanders
2008-01-16 19:42:00
The bible inspiration clock strikes me as a very useful tool for the religious. It’s not only a clock that has a 5 minute sound chip that plays religious music and quotes from inspirational sections from the Bible, to wake you up, it could also potentially keep evil away from your bedside. We all know ...

Nature in Miniature - Flemish Miniature Paintings
2007-12-09 23:28:00

Bel-Gium Is Dividing As A Nation
2007-12-02 16:38:00
Belgium’s chances of surviving as a unified nation took a serious blow when Yves Leterme the Flemish Christian Democrat leader, abandoned his efforts to create a government and told King Albert the situation was hopeless. Belgium has been without an effective government since June. He admitted being unable to bridge differences between the Dutch-spoeaking ...
Flanders-Netherlands merger?
2007-11-28 17:48:00
Over five months since the 10 June election and Belgium is still without a government. Recently the Dutch newspaper 'Dag on Monday' announced that nearly half of the Dutch would be happy for Flanders and the Netherlands to unite in one country. (54% Dutch men, 36% Dutch women)Many Dutch supporters of a merger think a new country with a population of 22 million people might enhance their political and economic power in the European Union. 80& of Dutch nationals say they are very fond of the Flemish. The Dutch like the Flemish Burgundian attitude towards life, their accent and their good mood and gentle character. A Burgundian lifestyle generally indicates a more relaxed approach to life; open, frivolous and exuberant with emphasis placed on good food and drink, notably beer. The 'Roman Catholic' Burgundian lifestyle in the historically strongly Catholic provinces of Noord-Brabant and Limburg can be contrasted to the 'Calvinistic Protestant' more sober lifestyle of the Dutch l...
In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.Dr. John McCrae wrote the poem during World War 1. He was a Canadian military surgeon and he died from pneumonia and meningitis while still working in a field hospital during the war at the age of 45.

News round-up after event seven: Historic Tour of Flanders
2007-09-13 00:00:00
Click on the picture to enlarge Welcome to the latest issue for 2007 of the post-event news and gossip update for the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship. The Tour of Flanders wrapped up the asphalt element of the season and produced some fabulous battles for the top places, carried out in a great spirit of sportsmanship. As ever, the thrash around the closed roads of Belgium was a popular and challenging event and remains a worthy round of the championship. News Chris Browne and Ali Cornwell were a late entry after a big rush to rebuild their Escort after an accident in Ypres at the end of June. The car was finally finished in Belgium at 1am on Saturday morning after nine weeks of work. Unfortunately, a gearbox problem (see below) cost them time early on, but they took a top ten finish. After some pretty torrid luck in recent times, Mike Barratt and Jody Watson were pleased with their event, even though it finally ended in a non-finish for the Mini Cooper S....
Historic Tour of Flanders report
2007-09-13 00:00:00
Click on the picture to enlarge Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship, Report, round seven: Historic Tour of Flanders It took Jimmy McRae and Andy Richardson more than a dozen stages to get to the head of the British contingent on the Tour of Flanders in Belgium, but once ahead of Gareth Lloyd/Ian Oakey they took a well-deserved victory after a fabulous battle. Round seven of the 2007 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship was a cracking event on the slippery asphalt of the Flanders region and many crews explored ditches. However, with title contenders David Stokes/Guy Weaver and Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride both winning their categories, the overall title will only be settled on the final round in Yorkshire. Category 1 Nutt/McBride put their Porsche 911 into control of category 1 right from the start and were never really troubled as they turned in a typically slick performance. The Porsche ran like clockwork and a commanding victory means that ...
Dunlop/Gambia MSA BHRC, the Historic Tour of flanders
2007-09-06 00:00:00
Click on the picture to enlarge Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship, Preview, round seven: Historic Tour of Flanders Round seven the 2007 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship is the third and final asphalt event on the schedule, the Historic Tour of Flanders (8/9 September). The closed roads of the Roeselare region of Flanders in Belgium provide a unique challenge for the crews and the trip across the channel is always a popular event on the BHRC schedule. With only the Trackrod Historic Rally to follow Flanders, the championship battle is finely poised. Current overall championship leaders David Stokes and Guy Weaver will be seeking maximum points in their Escort Mk1, but they know that good results for their two major rivals will keep the title race wide open when they head to Yorkshire in early October. With six strong scores already recorded, Stokes/Weaver really need to win category 2 to improve their overall total as final positions ...
Blotevoetenpad in Vlaanderen - Barefootpath in Flanders
2007-08-19 16:49:00
Today we did something we have never done before. We walked on a specially prepared 2km long barefoot path in Zutendaal, Belgian Limburg. This is the first such path in Belgian Flanders. We walked over wooden logs, wooden planks, small stones, gravel, rocks, grass, squelchy mud, in knee-deep muddy water and sand. We felt cold and warm underfoot, wet and dry, hard and soft. We climbed up and down log steps and a four storey lookout tower. We balanced on treestumps of different heights, walked across a wibbly-wobbly wooden logs bridge and attempted stilt-walking on logs. My children squealed with delight as they experienced all the textures and knowing they were allowed to get dirty. My photos of the Barefoot Walk on FlickrIt is also peaceful, well apart from people's screams in the freezing puddles, and far from traffic and everyday noises. Walking over the different surfaces gives a chance to heighten other senses, just like a baby learns about the world through its mouth.Wal...

Mark Flanders Secret R & R Trip Flat out Exposed!
2007-05-11 18:15:00
Have you seen Mark Flander's newly posted article, Is ActiveRain real life? Well the secrets now out of the bag. The rumors are true - after his accident and surgery, David Podgursky told me that drastic action was needed to help Mark Flanders get back on this feet.  We decided that Mark needed a tropical environment to help speed the needed healing. Having been through several car accidents myself, I could relate and so we invited Mark Flander's (ok so we actually got aka Flat Mark :-)) to spend some R & R time here with Jack & I in Clearwater, Florida.  Flat Mark agreed to come but only under one condition - the details of this trip MUST be kept secret until he got back. So I know all his friends are happy to see him back "dancing in the rain"  - and now I can tell you the rest of the story. Here are the details of the ABC plan that facilitated Flat Mark's quick and speedy...
