I also remember the crushing disappointment of the next week as the Jaguars run the Super Bowl was thwarted by the Tennessee Titans. I remember thinking back that this game was filled with hubris and that we paid for it over the next several seasons. Anyhow, I'm a bit under the weather this week. Part of me is relieved knowing that they (my parents) are back in the Philippines, back to where they are most comfortable at; but part of me miss them being here....The photo above is one of the few baby photos I have. I am the second child in the family, I was born 15 months after my older brother. My brother has tons of baby photos - I don't. I used to give my parents a hard time about the fact that I have less baby photos :) ...My mom and I are different in so many ways, yet we are also the same in many ways. Bottomline, we both love being a mom ....***Hop on to "We Are That Family" for more Blast In The Past sharings :)

Friday Flashback - One Year: Later-Sick Vick
2008-04-25 21:47:00 A year ago today, authorities raided NFL Atlanta Falcon, Michael Vick's Virginia property where he was running a dogfighting operation. Like many people, I was sickened and appalled by these events. I may have four felines, but I love dogs too, in fact there's not an animal on the planet that I won't go to bat for against cruelty and neglect. At the time, I didn't think I could write a lighthearted poem about such a heinous crime and sadistic human being. I was wrong. After stewing on it for a while, this simple-styled, almost sing-song piece evolved, very quickly. Its simplicity belies the feeling of disgust that I harbour over the situation. Read it and you may laugh, but the humour is still shadowed by a dark feeling of sadness over the minimally meted-out justice and vindication for the many dogs who suffered and those who continue to do so.To read about some of the luckier dogs from Vick's kennel, take a look here: CNN From fighters to friendsKatBad Dawg, #7Michael...
Jacksonville Jaguars Draft Flashback: 2005
2008-04-25 18:45:00 [EDIT]Now, I'm going to be traveling all day today. With the switch to the new platform, I can schedule my posts, allowing me a great deal of flexibility. Whereas on previous "travel days", you'd suffer from a lack of content, today you get fresh stuff! How cool is that?To start our "draft eve" coverage, let's look back to the 2005 draft and see what sort of treasure and fools gold we found.[/EDIT]There's a rule among the "NFL Elite" that it's a poor decision to grade a draft class until three seasons have passed. In today's "instant history" world, that's impossible as Mel Kiper and the rest of the ESPN Stooges will grade the draft almost as quickly as the pick is made. That's just the demand of the 24 hour sports news cycle playing out in yet another absurd fashion. I understand it, we all want to know that our teams did well, and because of that our media overlords give us what we want. Before we get into the grading the 2005 draft acc...

BB FlashBack: Screen Recording Software with Advanced Screencast Editing Fu
2008-04-20 15:00:00 BB FlashBack 2.0 is an easy-to-use screen recording software that lets you make movies of your Windows desktop very quickly. It is also very light and uses its own video capture driver so your system performance wonât be affected during the screen recording phase. *BB FlashBack would cost $225 per copy but some of you may have the software for free as we couple of licensed copies to giveaway. While the basic screen recording features in BB FlashBack are pretty much the same as available in other competing titles (like Camtasia Studio), the software really shines on three counts: 1. When you start recording the screen, you get an option to automatically change the screen resolution, set the desktop wallpaper as blank and/or hide all the desktop icons. These little things are such a time-saver and also help reduce the overall size of your desktop video. 2. The developers have applied some good thinking while writing the screencast video editor in BB FlashBack. Itâs a linear tim...

Friday Flashback - Way back!
2008-04-11 02:07:00 Recently, my mother came across one of her old yearbooks from 1946. My mom lives just a 2 minute drive away, where she and my dad are tucked up in a lovely apartment complete with en suite laundry, a roaring gas fireplace and two fully equipped bathrooms. She is hooked up to satellite t.v. and nary a day goes by where she doesn't say, "We watched the greatest old movie last night!" It's a good thing she has these distractions because my father, the one with Parkinson's and dementia, is quite a challenge both mentally and physically and she needs all the escapism she can get.So, anyway. She was on the phone with me the other day and telling me about this yearbook, and she's flipping through it while she's on the phone, when suddenly she exclaims, "Oh, I just found a poem, written by Joan." Now, Joan is my dearly beloved aunt, who passed away a couple of years ago from complications with emphesema caused by a lifetime of smoking Players' cigarettes. Make no mistake, she was ...

FLASHBACK: 1998
2008-03-30 16:16:00 What a difference a decade makes. No, Iâm not referring to the uber invention that is Google which helped me find this gem of an article from the NY Times in a matter of nano seconds.Iâm talking about the NY Mets and their organization. It was only 10 years ago we were the dregs of the baseball universe; still trying to break through the carnage that was the âWorst Team Money Could Buy,â which included Bobby Bonilla, Vince Coleman, Eddie Murray and ironically, Willie Randolph. For much of the 90âs the Mets were a downright embarrassment and their future looked bleak. In 1998, incredibly, the Mets didnât sell out Opening Day. âItâs anybodyâs guess when the stadium will be full againâŠThey lacked star appealâ as noted in the Times article. And who could argue? Butch Huskey in right, Brian McRae in center, and Tim Spehr behind the plate â filling in for an injured Todd Hundley â was not exactly murdererâs row. Fortunately, 7 weeks later, the Mets pulled off th...

R.E.M - Accelerate: A Superserious Flashback To 80s Upbeat Past
2008-03-21 10:27:00 Michael Stipe and his fellows went back to the studio for another rock ân roll record, the R.E.M way. I never stopped listening to their 2004âs Away From the Sun all the way up to here, a smooth relaxing pop rock album by one of the best rock bands around. Accelerate flashbacks to R.E.Mâs early 80s material such as Green, Lifeâs Rich Pageant, Document and others. A loud up-beat experience R.E.M tried once more in the 90s with Monster. Accelerate talks politics in a very punk fashion, Michael Stipeâs voice is getting a bit edgy for such a loud experience. âSupernatural Superseriousâ is another no.1 shaker from the genre R.E.M helped develop in the 90s. But personally, I could not relate to any other tune here on this short 11-tracks 35-minutes black and white album. Maybe âMan-sized Wreathâ comes as a close second favorite. Now, Iâm not blaming R.E.M for what they have done and it can be another forward experience by going backwards in sound. R.E.M experienced man...

Flashback: NCAA Tournament 2002
2008-03-21 06:21:00 "How about some scores?" came from the front seat as the old man I was driving suddenly woke up. Ohio in the dead of night, the Turnpike at 85 miles per hour and I was reduced to trying to find a crackling sports talk station for this guy as we raced back to Michigan. I was simply struggling to stay awake and not crash into a fiery end along I-90.We were on our way home from Washington D.C. after a disappointing basketball game. One that cut our stay in the city short by a couple nights. What had seemed so promising became grating, annoying and disappointing. But then again, for 63 other teams each year in March - the same feelings and emotions are felt, however differently. I'm a Michigan State fan, and our quest to hit the Final Four for the fourth straight year ended quickly with a loss to some sub-standard state school that was trying to make a cinderella run. I watched that game in the closest thing to a sports bar that I could find in downtown Washington D.C., sitting next to... |
