Midwest Floods Shrink the Food Supply

Iowa Floods - Police "Strike Teams" Invade Homes, Harass Flood Victims
2008-06-18 15:23:00
I just saw this on YouTube and had to post it. Here's the description from the video itself:Cops break down doors, threaten residents who question them as part of martial law conditioning, authorities prevent people from re-entering their homesShocking footage out of Cedar Rapids Iowa shows cops and government employee "strike teams" breaking into houses of flood victims and threatening anyone who questions their actions in complete violation of the 4th amendment right that protects against unlawful search and seizure. No warrant, no knock home invasions are being carried out on the flimsy pretext of "checking for structural damage" as cops harass and threaten with arrest people who refuse to have their homes ransacked by thugs in uniforms.Cedar Rapids police chief Greg Graham promised residents over the weekend that "Law enforcement officers are not entering homes," and that firefighters would only enter homes through unlocked doors and windows yet the video clearly shows locked h...
Bad start to the week: Penampang floods for second time in 3 days
2008-06-10 16:49:00
Oh no, not again! Talk about Monday blues and the the amazing speed at which Penampang gets flooded these days. I was at the office when my son called around 4pm saying water from the river has reached downstairs. Never mind I thought - relatively, it’s usually a mere puddle the 2nd time. How wrong I was. When I finally left the office at 5.20pm after receiving a frantic phonecall from the wife a few minutes earlier saying the flood has returned, it was already raining … you guessed it right … cats and dogs. It was a big mistake leaving the office at that time - I should left the office much earlier - it took me 90 minutes to reach my wife’s office on the other side of the city, where it should’ve taken 30 minutes at most, and during the best of times, less than 10 minutes. Another tip is to switch on the radio to the local channel - they usually give updates on flood situations - I was in front of Sutera Harbour when the police went on the radio sayi...

If I have ever done live blogging when floodwaters downstairs are rising, now would be it. In Penampang, not-so-heavy rain started 4 something pm, but by 6pm the Moyog river was already threateningly swollen. So, it’s 25th April all over again. Thank God, it was not as bad as the last time. The meter-high barrier around the ...

News: Bangladesh trees to stop cyclones and floods
2008-05-25 22:15:00
Over 49.8% of Bangladesh's 144 million people live below the poverty line. 84% live off less than US$2/day. 41.3% live off less than 1 US$1/day. With those demographic poverty figures, not much is needed to push Bangladesh's poor over the edge.Natural calamities, such as floods, tropical cyclones, and tidal bores occur almost every year. Most parts of Bangladesh are less than 12 metres (39 ft) above sea level. If the sea level would rise by one metre (3ft), it is believed 50% of the land would be flooded. No wonder the yearly cyclone season is a season of despair and disaster for many Bangladeshis.Last summer the country was hit by two major floods while Cyclone Sidr tore through its coastal districts in November, killing at least 5,000 people and leaving tens of millions homeless and desperately short of food. Environmentalists said the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, stood as a "green bastion" against the cyclone. If it were not for the Sundarbans, the death to...

There are usually two major floods here in a year - by major I mean floodwaters would be at least knee-high downstairs. Floods here are most unpredictable. Where most people would sleep soundly at night when it’s raining heavily, it’s the total opposite here. We’d look out for the 3-step alarm; if it’s the 3rd alarm, ...
Jakarta on track to end floods: Governor
2008-04-24 02:00:00
The construction of a new $560m canal in the Indonesian capital should help end crippling floods that regularly hit Jakarta by 2012, the city?s governor Fauzi Bowo said yesterday.Authorities have so far failed to tackle the floods, which killed 50 people during the wet season in 2006 and triggered more chaos in February this year, swamping huge swathes of the teeming city and shutting Jakarta?s main airport for hours.Bowo, who took over as governor in October, said that the floods should be controlled by the end of his five-year term, but was less optimistic on the capital?s notorious traffic woes.?For the floods it?s much easier, because there?s a light at the end of the tunnel,? he told foreign correspondents. Land purchase problems have hampered building of the city?s new 5.2 trillion rupiah ($564.6 million) East Flood Canal, but Bowo said that land acquisition had now reached 80 percent.Bowo said a ?three-in-one? scheme in the city centre, which restricts use of the fast lanes t...

Floods get worse in Bolivia
2008-02-07 05:36:00
The ?Niña? effects are growing in Bolivia, the latest estimates state that more than 41,000 families have been affected by the phenomena, a quarter of these in Cochabamba alone. There are 50 dead persons reported. In Cochabamba estimates talk about 10.5000 families in 30 municipalities and 14 people reported dead.People all over the country are fighting alone to save their belongings and to remove the mud which has invaded their homes, help is totally insufficient. People push the mud out of their homes by any means they have, while many houses now shelter several families.Losses in the milk industry in Cochabamba are very large, animals, crops and grasslands have been lost to the floods. This will have a heavy impact on the prices to the consumers in the coming months. Most main roads are in very bad shape difficulting the normal transport of any product. In the tropical provinces of Cochabamba around 70% of all the familias have been affected by the floods. In the lower valleys of ...

Indonesia floods kill 12, cause travel chaos
2008-02-02 12:43:00
By Mita Valina Liem JAKARTA (Reuters) - Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains have killed at least 12 people across Indonesia and the capital's main airport was briefly shut on Friday as more than 40 flights were delayed due to low visibility. Scores of cars were stranded and people had to wade through murky knee-high water in many parts of Jakarta, a city of 14 million that is regularly hit by floods at this time of year. Jakarta's main airport had been forced to close on Monday morning, after rain and fog slashed visibility to less than 300 metres, Hariyanto, an official at Soekarno Hatta airport, said. More than 40 flights had been delayed, with some planes diverted to Jakarta's smaller Halim airport, while several flights coming to the capital were forced to return to Singapore. "The airport has reopened since three o'clock (0800 GMT)", Hariyanto, who uses only one name, said later by telephone. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was fo...

Woolley Bridge Floods
2008-01-26 22:56:00
This week's floods in the Glossop area have again been big news, with articles in both the Advertiser & Chronicle. But the only hint of a wider view of this problem came in the Advertiser, with a quote from a resident of Woolley Lane:"We told the council when a new house was built next door two years ago that this area was a flood plain"Indeed. There's a new housing development being built not far from the flooded area, as well as a Hotel/Travelodge as we reported previously (and whose previously blocked planning proposal is being resurrected - a report will come soon). So it'll be really interesting to see what happens if the Glossop Spur is built, because the river Etherow tends to burst its banks all along the area where the roundabout from the A57 will be. The picture above gives a projected view of what the possible road signs will need to indicate, because this is the third time major flooding has occurred here this century...

Floods in most of Bolivia - effects of "la niña"
2008-01-25 06:25:00
The effects of the climate phenomena called "la niña" have been devasting this year in Bolivia. Specially in the east, north and central part of the country, paradogically the highlands and south-west part of the country are instead in a drought.30 people have died and more than 22000 people have been affected by the floods and intense rains.A couple of months ago the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel for climate change issued a study which you can find in their website here:http://www.ipcc.ch/index.h-tmWhich talked about "la niña" and other climatic phenomena which will affect Bolivia this coming years. A serious drought has also been forseen in the highlands, which would produce massive migrations from the countryside to El Alto, increasing the 850000 thousand people population dramatically and accelerating the poverty time bomb which this city represents. What is worse is the fact that nothing is being done to prepare for these phenomena, we will only have to deal with it lik...
