Hystoric Soccer in Florence: The "King of Sports" is Born
2008-05-20 13:27:00
Next June it will be held in Florence one of the most original events of the city: “Costumed Football”, a traditional celebration that mixes sport and fun and takes us back to the origins of the “king of sports”.Costumed Football was originally played during the military campaigns in ancient Greece, both as entertainment and training for soldiers. They had fun and in the meantime they exercised their muscles before the battle. The game arrived later to the Italic Peninsula, specifically to Florence in 59 b.c, and became immediately popular among the Roman Soldiers that dominated the city. They followed the same rules as the Greek game, just changing the Greek name from “Episciro” into the Latin name “Haspastum”During the Renaissance the game greatly entertains the Florentine aristocrats, still playing with the same rules from the ancient Greeks. Initially the playing field is a giant sand pit of 80 x 50 meters. Piazza Santa Croce was the football field, covered with ...

Florence: A visit with Michelangelo
2008-05-12 16:09:00
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born outside of Florence in 1475.  Though he spent much of his life working in Rome, he loved Florence and considered it his home.  Many of his greatest works still reside in Florence, and Florentines are exceedingly proud of their native son.  Although visiting the city can get pricey, many of Michelangelo’s treasures- can be experienced cheaply, or for free! Angela K. Nickerson, author of A Journey into Michelangelo’s Rome, takes us on a budget-friendly tour of Michelangelo’s Florence. Michelangelo in the Museums The Bargello: Via del Proconsolo, 4   Perhaps the best bargain in Florence, the Bargello is a small museum with an amazing collection of sculpture, all for one of the lowest museum prices in Florence (€4).  Here Michelangelo’s Bacchus holds court alongside his Brutus.  Bacchus was Michelangelo’s first commission in Rome, and it failed to meet his patron’s approval because he depicted the god of ...

Checking in: Hotel Dali, Florence
2008-04-29 18:41:00
Hotel Dali Via Dell Oriuolo, 17 (near the Duomo) The Hotel Dali has been one of our favorite hotels in Florence since we created our Florence hotel guide in 2001. For the first in our “Checking In” series, we’re posing some questions to the owners of the Dali, Marco, 42 and his wife Samanta, 38 (pictured above). EC: How many years have you owned and run the Hotel Dali? HD: 10 years. EC: What advice do you have for those traveling on a budget in Florence? HD: Good question! In Florence, things are typically only free during culture week. This occurs during a different week each year and all the public museums are all free for seven days. During the summer time, there are some free tours of private gardens and the like. We recommend checking with the “associazione amici dei musei” office, located inside the Prato Museum. EC: Where can I buy a great bottle of wine without spending too much money? HD: If you want a good wine, but not a rare bottle, the s...
'Pub Angels' to Bring Florence Drunks Back to Earth
2008-04-28 15:00:00
Cross-cultural exchanges programs allow students to gain a deeper appreciation of other cultures, to step outside the bounds of the familiar and explore? Ah, who we are kidding, student-exchange programs are mostly about getting drunk and hopefully laid in some place other than that listed on your beginner?s driver?s license. As such, the ?cultural exchanges? taking place may not be what mom and pop read about in promotional literature for these programs. Take for example the type of ?cultural exchange? currently happening in Florence, Italy. Florence, along with Rome, has seen a strong influx of students from the UK and US who spend a term of their studies over there. While these students might take a recipe for a knock-out pasta fagioli with them and be able to make an Italian person feel at home by cursing them in their native tongue, the citizens in Florence get to witness their drinking culture go from one of reserved imbibing to the more violent, binge-drinking style of bo...

Friday flip-through: RyanAir reports, Lisbon, Florence
2008-04-04 16:33:00
Let’s wind down and settle into our weekend, shall we? Even on a rainy Friday morning, we’ve found inspiration this morning flipping through some other sites. For example: The web has been busier than the Dublin airspace with stories about Ryanair. Our favorite budget travel rebel at “Less than a Shoestring” last week continued to explain ”Why I Love/Hate RyanAir.” (Let’s say that it has to do with taxes, fees, and working the system. “Dealing with low-cost carriers such as RyanAir is like playing a game. In order to play well, you need to know the rules.” Meanwhile, over on the other shoe, Spendthrift Shoestring is back from Carriacou and already monitoring the overall health of the low-cost carrier business. Alex points out that Air Berlin and Centralwings have experienced some turbulence, while RyanAir is reporting growth in March. At least some airlines are showing growth. Lindsay Lohan is rumored to have a new role playing a sex addicted waitress in the movie Florence. Is this a case of life imitating art? Lindsay' Lohan's ex-boyfriend Riley Giles told News of the World that the 21 year-old rehabbed star has become a sex addict after trying to overcome her cocaine addiction. Riley Giles told Britain's News of the World ."Lindsay is definitely a nymphomaniac. She's wild in bed. We'd have sex a couple of times in a day and then go to it through the night. We once did it four times in a row straight. That was crazy. Lindsay was insatiable. She'd demand sex again and again. We'd go at it for hours. She'd have worn out most guys." Watch Lindsay Lohan's Razzie Award winning performance as a pole dancing stripper in "I Know Who Killed Me." Just days after agreeing to portray a member of CHARLES MANSON'S real-life murderous cult in The Manson Girls, work shy Lindz has reportedly sealed a deal to strip naked in a new movie called Florence. ...

Piazza della Signoria, Florence

Piazza della Signoria is an L-shaped square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. It was named after the Palazzo della Signoria, also called Palazzo Vecchio. It is the focal point of the origin and of the history of the Florentine Republic and still maintains its reputation as the political hub of the city. It is the meeting place of Florentines as well as the numerous tourists. The impressive 14th century Palazzo Vecchio is still preeminent with its crenellated tower. The square is also shared with the Loggia della Signoria, the Uffizi Gallery, the Palace of the Tribunale della Mercanzia (1359) (now the Bureau of Agriculture), and the Uguccioni Palace (16th c.) Rumble: The Brunico Padlock Mystery
2008-03-29 23:02:00
In Brunico, a town nearby, there is a bridge over the Rienza river with hundreds of padlocks on its railing. We thought these had a romantic meaning: love pledges or "lost loves locked into ones heart".The guy at the gas station had the answer: Up 2004, there was a military camp in Brunico where youngsters came for their military service. After finishing their tour of duty, it was a tradition to hook the padlock of their trunk to the railing, and throw the key into the river.Delving a bit deeper into the "Italian padlock mysteries", revealed different connotations and other traditions:Originally, the Italian men drawn into military service, took a lock from their home and hooked it onto a monument or a structure, as a public vow to return back home. Some say, it was a vow to return safely back to their loved one..There is also the Roman legend that lovers will spend their lives together if they write their names on a padlock, place it on the Ponte Milvio's third lamp post and throw...

Florence: Should you rent a scooter?
2008-02-27 18:17:00
Ah, Florence, Renaissance city of artistic treasures, architectural icons, and mouth-watering delicacies. And throngs of tourists. And locals zipping up and down tiny streets on scooters and motorcycles. If you’re an adventurous traveler, you might consider seeing the city like a local — on a cute little euro-scooter. But should you? Pros Renting a scooter in Florence makes sense if you want to take scenic drives through the countryside. If you rent a typical scooter (like a Honda SH 125 cc or the smaller Cagiva Cucciolo 50), you’ll be able to drive along country roads and scoot your way through Chianti country. Sounds romantic, no? The hilly countryside (and even immediate environs of Florence) are much less strenuously traversed on a scooter than trekked on a bicycle. Cons Renting a scooter is not practical if you simply want to speed up your city sightseeing. Sure, the locals zip about town, but they also are trained to avoid the busiest streets and pedestrian z...
Florence - Must See for the First Time VIsitor to Italy
2008-02-24 14:24:00
Florence, Italy, is a definite must-see for the first time traveler to Italy, my choice would be Florence. Florence has retained its standing as a center of art and culture since the birth of the Renaissance. The city is renowned for high fashion such as silk goods excellent leather, great cuisine, beautiful parks, tourism and, of course, friendly and warm people. The city is located in the heart of the central region of Tuscany, situated in a valley surrounded by the Tuscan hills. To travel to this city, it could take a three-hour train ride north of Rome and 1 hour from Pisa.Florence or Firenze is home to many great prominent figures (Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarotti, Dante Allighieri, Niccolo' Machiavelli), their legacies can be seen all over town. In the Academy Art Gallery one can see Michaelangelo's famous Statue of David, completed by the sculptor at age 26 after others had rejected the marble block because of its imperfections. According to the bible, David repre...
Potential Bills Free Agent: CB Drayton Florence
2008-02-18 13:57:00
Florence is young, physical and could start immediately (NCTimes) Few positions on the roster of the Buffalo Bills went through as much transition last season as cornerback. After losing Nate Clements to free agency, the Bills signed veteran Jason Webster to replace him - only to lose him in the season opener. He was replaced by Jabari Greer, who performed admirably for the rest of the season. The team has four players at the position that can play (Terrence McGee, Greer, Ashton Youboty and Kiwaukee Thomas), but general consensus holds that the Bills should look at signing a starter. Drayton Florence might just be the man for the job. A one-time starter for the Chargers, Florence was pushed out of a starting job by the emergence of one of the league's elite corners in Antonio Cromartie. An unrestricted free agent - but probably not the biggest cornerback name available (Asante Samuel and Brian Kelly may claim those rights) - Florence may be a natural fit in Buffalo's ...

Florence museum tip: Book online, skip the line!
2008-01-30 17:49:00
If you’ve ever visited the fabulous Uffizi museum in Florence, you probably know that your first hour (or two) there can often be spent waiting in a long, slow ticket line. And, that’s if you’re lucky. After all, the museum puts a daily cap on total entrants, so if you arrive on really busy days or after lunch, you can find yourself without a ticket at all! Enter the sleek new website of the “Polo Museale Fiorentino,” the city’s governing board for 20 museums, including the Uffizi, the Accademia, the Pitti Palace, the Museum of San Marco, and more. On the site, you can take virtual tours of each museum, read about upcoming exhibits, verify opening hours, and map out locations. But our favorite feature: The site now offers online ticket booking for all museums, allowing users to bypass the long queue and restricted entrance schedule. How it works The process is simple: You choose the museum you wish to book, pick a date, and then select an...
