Chicago Cubs @ Florida Marlins 1:20 CT/2:20 ET WGN
2009-05-03 19:30:00
It is a beautiful spring day here in Chicago, perfect for sitting in the bleachers, but not so perfect for sitting inside and watching baseball. I recommend firing up the ol' radio (or laptop), and hauling the game outside with you while you soak up some sun and fresh air. I know it's not easy to some of us to leave our parents' basements for anything other than Comic Con or the odd, offline World Of Warcraft gathering, but trust me, that pale complexion isn't going to help any of us get dates. What a difference a weekend makes, huh? Let me take you back to last Thursday, when most of us were on the ledge and ready to call it season. Of course, looking up at the Reds and Pirates will do that to a fan. To jog your memory, Rich Harden had the highest average in our starting lineup, Aaron Miles had somehow wormed his way into a startering job, and Theriot was challening Ronny Cedeno for the coveted "E6" title. shut up [no way the cubs are going to come back and score 3+ in the bot...
Chicago Cubs 6, Florida Marlins 1

Relax, Peeps. I told you'd I'd get it going Don't look now, kids, but we have a win streak. LOHO favorite Ted Lilly pitched 8 strong innings, allowing only 5 hits and 1 run. However, the best Lilly moment of the game came when the Marlins, in their infinite wisdom, decided to walk the light-hitting Aaron Miles to get to Lilly. At this point, I turned to Max and said "Walk Miles to get to Lilly? I think I'd rather pitch to Miles." Sure enough, in true bad-ass fashion, Ted made them pay, promptly doubling and scoring 2 runs. Live and learn, Fredi. Ted has now beaten every team in Major League Baseball. His domination is complete.   In other amazing news, DLee finally homered (yes, THAT DLee. Do you know another?) and Theriot added his secondhttp://www.chicagotribune-.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-0-3-cubs-marlins-chicago-may03,0,-5791630.story long ball in two games, leading to the LOHO Disturbing Image of the Day: If his teammates thought they would never see the end of Ryan T...

Hanley Ramirez back with the Red Sox?: No, not at all but according to Tom Verducci and Jon Heyman, the Boston Red Sox asked the Florida Marlins about shortstop Hanley Ramirez. Volstad leads Florida Marlins past Phillies (AP)

Chris Volstad tossed six sharp innings and combined with four relievers on a four-hitter, leading the Florida Marlins to a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. The Marlins, who have the smallest payroll in the majors, took two of three from the NL East-leading Phillies to move within 1 1/2 games of first ...

You all may remember Ian’s fascination with Barry Bonds as he approached and passed the all-time home run mark by Hank Aaron. To me it was an incredible achievement but I had a hard time celebrating it because of the person behind it. A week or so ago Boston’s Manny Ramirez hit his 500th career home ...

I think this is a pretty horrible looking collectible. It is officially known as the “Forever Collectibles Florida Marlins 2008 Statue of Liberty Statues on Parade 9 Inch Figure“. I assume it’s related to the All-Star game in New York. That begs the question: What other New York Landmark would you like ...
Hanley Homers Marlins to Win
2008-06-04 23:48:00
For 8 innings it looked like the Fish were going to continue their downhill spiral and then Mike Rabelo hit a 2-run home run followed by another 2-run shot from Hanley Ramirez (his seconf of the game) and the Marlins win 6-4. Oh, and Kevin Gregg did not blow the save.
That Was Quick: Marlins Back in First Place

2008-05-23 06:28:00
Andrew Miller showed up big-time tonight holding the Arizona Diamondbacks scoreless over 7 innings while striking out a career high 9. By coming to terms now, the Marlins will lock up Ramirez through his arbitration years (2009-2011), and then three more years, where he could have qualified for free agency. For those ...

The Florida Marlins & Hanley Ramirez Agree On A Long-Term Deal?
2008-05-11 02:01:00
According to the AP, The Florida Marlins and shortstop Hanley Ramirez agreed on a contract extension for six years and $70 million. Despite the history with the Marlins of dumping high-value players or trading them, they have decided to put an investment with one of their core players -- in fact, he may be one of the top three in the game. Many, yes -- including myself, have been very critical of the Florida organization with their high turnover of players and taking the revenues they receive to not reinvest in their team. They scout well and know how to pick young talent, but it seems that the fan base down there are a little disillusioned with the franchise.Well, let's hope this is a sign of change down there. An official announcement is expected to come as early as next week, according to Florida media reports. The Marlins have a $21 million payroll this season. Ramirez's extension is the biggest contract in franchise history."We have something, but we're working out the details,...

PREVIEW: NY Mets at Florida Marlins 7:10 ET
2008-04-01 16:34:00
The Mets try to make it 2 in a row tonight when Pedro Martinez toes the rubber against the Marlins at Dolphins Stadium.Off the strength of a 7-2 victory, behind the impeccable pitching of Johan Santana, Martinez is looking to bounce back from an injury plagued 2006 and 2007.Coming into the season, for relatively the first time in his career, he is not "THE ACE." Meaning, this Hall-of-Famer in waiting is pitching with the mental ease of a 2nd starter, not the anchor of a staff. It's not Pedro's job to lead the Mets rotation anymore. His job is to be solid, and pitch 5 or 6 innings of Pedro Martinez baseball.Although his injuries are a concern, lets face it...80% of Pedro is better than 90% of the rest of the league at 100%. Think about it.Standing in the way of Martinez and the Mets are Hanley Ramirez, Josh Willingham, ex-Met Mike Jacobs and the rest of the "Mini-Marlins." Countering the Marlins offensive is David Wright, Carlos Beltran and the catalyst to it all, Jose Reyes. Altho...

Florida Marlins? 9th in good hands with closer Gregg (AP)
2008-02-25 23:37:00
In the Florida Marlins’ clubhouse, closer Kevin Gregg stands out. Partly it’s because he’s 6-foot-6 and weighs 238 pounds. And then there’s the $2.5 million contract, which makes him the best-paid player for the National League’s most frugal franchise. “I laugh at it, but it’s cool,” Gregg says. “It’s the dynamics of this team. 2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Florida Marlins
2008-02-20 07:50:00
The tour continues, I believe to stop #20 in Miami. I still harbor (pun?) a certain amount of irrational resentment toward the Marlins for the following offenses: 1) wearing teal after the 90’s ended, 2) the 1997 World Series. Seeing that the Marlins have torn down and re-built about 15 times since then, maybe I need to get over it.  Record: 71-91, 5th in NL East Pythagorean Projection (Patriot formula): 71.51 wins (790 runs scored, 891 runs allowed) Team Statistical Pages: Baseball Reference Baseball Prospectus FanGraphs MVN Blog: Marlins Today More Marlins Resources: Latest News Contract Status (this is actually worth reading.
