A Field Guide to Flour: Navigate the Baking Aisle at Your Grocery Store
2010-02-18 06:32:00 Recipe: Focaccia Bread with Rosemary & Onions When I bake from scratch, there is something gratifying about spending three hours in the company of a humming KitchenAid stand mixer and a preheating oven, my once pristine shirt covered in flour because, once again, I forgot to put an apron on before you started kneading. Part of the allure of baking from scratch is taking what was once a pile of raw ingredients - all inedible on their own - gets transformed by your own very hands into something that tastes so good that people will remember it long after they've wiped the crumbs away....
Banana Bread Step-by-Step Recipe
2009-11-16 04:00:00 What's all the fuss about, you ask? Well, you have to try it to know why. I still don't know why this is called 'bread' instead of cake but I do know that its actually somewhere in between and tastes awesome toasted. This is also a fool-proof recipe. Really. Just throw some things together in a bowl, whisk it and bake it to get this awesome loaf full of a yummy banana flavour. We rarely buy more than 4 bananas at at a time so mine is a one banana banana bread recipe. Is that too many bananas in one sentence yet? ;)Here's some of the star cast. A banana (because this is a one banana banana bread recipe, remember? Ok, I'll stop!), 2 eggs, nuts - walnuts being the most popular but I added what I had in hand, a handful of hazelnuts and a couple of macademia nuts which somehow made their way into my pantry and I have no idea from where. Step one - mash the banana up. I used a masher because something about getting squishy banana pieces on my fingers turns me off. Next, whisk togethe...
Spiral Cookies : Step-by-Step Recipe
2009-11-09 08:00:00 Anyone who saw these on SJ's blog and wanted to make them, raise your hands. Yep, that's what I thought. They are so pretty and look so homely and nice right? That's what actually got me started on this quite messy yet great decision to try them myself. Disclaimer: I am not very artistic. I believe artistic people can make food look nicer and this is especially true for desserts and some bakes. That really didn't discourage me though. I have step-by-step pictures and although my cookies didn't turn out as smooth and spirally as SJ's, they still wow-ed a lot of a people and tasted great. We need to prepare 2 batches of dough and since each require 1/2 an egg yolk, let's get that out of the way. Lightly beat an egg yolk and set aside. We will later halve this. Melt (or bring to room temperature) 1/2 cup unsalted butter and add 1/2 cup sugar to that. Beat until well combined. Add 4 drops of vanilla essence to this along with a pinch of salt. Mix well. Now add half the beaten egg...

The Flour Game
2008-07-23 10:00:00 I found this game about seven years ago but I think its roots go much farther back because Andrew claims he played it when he was a child. It's one we've brought out for family activities, kind of a low-tech version of Break the Ice.Get a tall plastic container (one of those 1 quart freezer containers works well) and pack it full of all-purpose flour. Press the flour into the container so that it's really blocked in there then put an plate over the top before inverting things and unmolding the flour tower.Lay a large button on top of the flour tower then take turns slicing away at the tower with butter knives to see who will be the first person to make the button fall from the top. Though I didn't read anything about it in the rules I found Andrew swears that the rule is that the person who drops the button has to pull it out of the pile of flour using only their teeth. Hmmmm . . .With teeth or without it's a fun game and easy to play over and over.***Last Thursday when I got...

Flour Crisis Rooting Out
2008-05-07 17:00:00 One of many prime responsibilities of the government is to supply flour to the people at affordable prices everywhere in the country through either utility stores or through the general markets. Along with the ample supply of the flour, government needs to keep a strict check on smuggling and hoarding of the flour. The inter-provincial ban on the transport of wheat and flour is timely and it should be observed more strictly and the supply of flour between the provinces should only be conducted through the governments. Another factor in alleviating the flour crisis in the country is to ensure that the prices in the markets of flour and wheat remains the same throughout the country according to the price fixed by the authorities. Smugglers, price hikers, hoarders and other elements involved in the flour crisis should be punished publicly and severely to set an example. Whatever government does, it should do it swiftly, transparently and professionally to ensure the relief to the commo...
Flour Vermicelli in Thick Soup
2008-05-05 03:15:00 Many many years ago when I was still working, my friend brought me to Alexandra Market and ordered this Flour Vermicelli. It's unlike what we usually take which requires the use of chopsticks. The vermicelli is all crushed and all you need is a spoon and the soup is in thick form.In Chinese, it's called ???. It's kind of like what Shihlin has but I had this many year before Shihlin came to Singapore and I have not been to Taiwan either. So to me this was the original.I had no idea how it was done but I came up with my own verison. The idea came from the Little Bowl Fins. This is also one of my Saturday dinner because it is fast and easy to cook. But be warned. The vermicelli will expand so it's advisable to cook this when you are ready to eat.Ingredients:2 bunch of Rice Vermicelli, crushed10 Fresh Shitake Mushroom, sliced10 Scallops, sliced halfed and blanched750ml Chicken BrothCornflour Mixture (Thickener)Seasonings:1 teaspoon Sugar1 teaspoon Salt1 teaspoon Light Soy Sauce1/2 t...

Soya Bean Flour KitKats
2008-04-21 10:42:00 A new flavour of mini pack KitKats appeared on the shelves of a supermarket I visited last week.As my current employer deems it necessary to send me to the four corners of Nagoya City Ive been frequenting some unfamiliar suburbs recently. Its interesting to see how prices vary not only between chains but also individual stores.Ive only seen these mini kitkats available in two or three areas. As to the kitkats themselves the filling is kinako or soya bean flour. Not especially sweet tasting they do seem a bit "floury" and have a thicker consistency compared to other kitkats. Not particularly memorable or provocative enough to try again.

Chia or Salba as a Gluten Free Flour Substitute
2008-04-19 06:56:00 Chia not only works as an egg substitute, but it also works as a flour substitute, which makes it ideal for people with gluten intolerance and celiac disease or people who are limiting their wheat intake for other reasons. I've seen two different methods described for using chia as a flour substitute. The first is to simply replace the flour in any recipe with equal parts chia flour or chia mixed with another gluten-free flour. The second method does not eliminate the flour altogether but reduces it by using 3 parts flour to 1 part ground chia or Salba. So, if the recipe calls for 1 cup flour you would use 3/4 cup flour and 1/4 cup chia. To make chia flour, you can grind chia in a coffee grinder or powerful blender such as the Vitamix. Now, what I'm wondering is what would happen if one replaced both the eggs and flour with chia in the same recipe ... Breakfast at the Flour Bakery and Cafe on Farnsworth Street, Fort Point, So
2008-03-09 18:00:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Flour Bakery and Cafe came up as a convenient spot during my search for a breakfast restaurant near the Boston Convention Center. It had good reviews online and it seemed like it would be walking distance from the center. My hotel was close to MBTA's (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) Red Line. To get to Flour Bakery on the day of the visit, I transferred to the Silver Line at South Station and exited at the Courthouse Station. I knew the address but still could not orient myself. A nice gentleman pointed me in the direction of Farnsworth Street where Flour is located. There is a very simple sign on the building announcing this eatery and it is easy to miss, though since I did not miss it I am pretty sure you would not either.Rate and Review : Breakfast at the Flour Bakery and Cafe on Farnsworth Street, Fort Point, South Boston

Click some flour, will you?
2008-03-01 06:04:00 Click! Click!! Click!!!Like always, morning of the last day of the event. This has *got* to change! Seriously! :)Anyway, another bout of being creatively challenged. But a ton of fun, nevertheless! Thanks, Bee & Jai for organizing this. When Bee first announced the theme for this month - I got insanely excited. Flour! Such a rockin' idea!I was reminded of our crazy get-covered-in-flour-while-pret-ending-to-help-with-roti parties! White and dusty all over, we soon start sneezing as we try to clean the flour off fast enough so we can start eating! So, I was trying to capture the image of flour falling and create a notion of it turning into these cute-as-a-button pasta shells ... I don't quite think I achieved what I wanted - a sense of the coarse (the flour) combined with the refined (that urbane pasta) ... but the idea has gotten me excited enough to want to keep working on it.Being a natural wheat junkie, I can't help but get excited about this theme. More so with the DB challe...

Buried in Flour?
2008-01-29 21:04:00 The Boston Globe has just run an op-ed under the headline "Ending the Stranglehold on Gaza." The authors are Eyad al-Sarraj, identified as founder of the Gaza Community Mental Health Program, and Sara Roy, identified as senior research scholar at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University...I do want to call attention to this sentence: Although Gaza daily requires 680,000 tons of flour to feed its population, Israel had cut this to 90 tons per day by November 2007, a reduction of 99 percent. You don't need to be a math genius to figure out that if Gaza has a population of 1.5 million, as the authors also note, then 680,000 tons of flour a day come out to almost half a ton of flour per Gazan, per day.1,000 pounds of flour per day per person. That's a serious quantity of pasta, pita, who knows, maybe sourdough? 1,000 pounds for you to eat, every .. single .. day! Yowza. And the propaganda machine against the evil Jews rolls on. Pak paramilitaries guarding nation's flour mills and distribution poin
2008-01-21 12:04:00 Pakistan has mobilized over 6000 paramilitary troops to guard the country's flour mills and distribution points, besides escorting supply-trucks in a bid to control flour shortage that has resulted in breadlines and spiraling prices. The Pakistani Rangers and Frontier Constabulary have reportedly been ordered into action by the newly created Federal Food Committee (FCC) in the wake of anti-government protests over the doubling of flour prices. State-subsidized flour, when available, sells for between and 14 and 18 Pakistani rupees per kilogram, but the price on the open market more than doubled at the beginning of January, reaching 60 rupees in some areas. The average wage of a day laborer in Pakistan is roughly a dollar and three-quarters of Pakistan’s 160 million people live on less than two dollars per day. The price spike has aggravated the suffering of millions whose daily incomes have already been taxed by rising food prices. Food prices have risen by more than 10 perce...

No more pumping with the new plastic sifters that are commonly found in the home stores! I found that to be exhausting and painful! Flour Prices
2007-12-12 08:59:00 President Mr Musharaf has announced that flour and oil prices has to be raised as international prices are on the up. We know we import oil from different countries so we are bound to purchase at their desired prices (as set by OPEC), but Sir, with due respect when reaping season of wheat comes government announces that we will produce wheat more than the targeted. But when it goes to mills for grinding the prices is on the up. I have learnt some economics and believe in supply and demand rules. The prices of a commodity should go down if it is produced above demand. But the streams are flowing upwards in this country:1. We do not depend on others are we are self-sufficient in Wheat so why to relate its price to international market.2. If the price is on the higher side after wheat is being produced more than required then why the shortage is created, government is helpless in curbing such people. It is economic terrorism and Shooting them all in road-cross publicly who are involved...
