Lighthouse Effect with Small Fluorescent Bulbs and Neon Indicator Switches

I made the mistake of putting an inline switch which has a neon indicator that lights when powered but not when in the on position, in a standard lamp that I was given. The reason I used that switch was that it was bigger and therefore easier to wire up. I put in an incandescent bulb and had no pr
Fluorescent Lamp Coil Resistance

Oscar helps California fight fluorescent light pollution
2008-06-05 00:56:00
What does Oscar the Grouch, the Sesame Street character who lived in a trash can, have to do with the California Environmental Protection Agency? We discovered at the Sustainable Brands 2008 conference in Monterey that Oscar is helping the California EPA tackle the serious issue of pollution from old fluorescent light bulbs, which contain mercury. California has created a highly innovative ‘Take-It-Back’ Partnership, fronted by Oscar, which is demonstrating the state’s firm commitment to environmental initiatives. For those in Europe who think we are doing so much more than the Americans on the environment, take a look at what California is doing. At the conference, we heard from Leonard Robinson, chief deputy director for the EPA’s Department of Toxic Substances Control. In the video below he is talking to me about the ‘Take-It-Back partnership. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eo9nV5k290Q

CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights) And Environmental Issues
2008-04-24 15:54:00
CFL (Compact fluorescent lights) bulbs are seen as an environmentally friendly replacement for incandescent lights. But are they really as good for the environment as claimed? The two issues often raised as arguments against using CFL's are1 - It requires more energy to manufacture a CFL than an incandescent lamp.2 - CFL's contain mercury which can potentially end up polluting the environment. The first issue is fairly easily answered in that even though they do require additional energy to manufacture; this is soon offset as CFLs last a lot longer than incandescent bulb.On this issue of mercury pollution I have summarized some of the for and against points of view below:Arguments For CFL'sOverall mercury emission by compact fluorescent lamps is less than the mercury released into the atmosphere by coal-fired power generation for an equivalent incandescent lamp over the same period. This assumption is based on the electricity generated to run lighting in your local area being gene...
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
2008-04-20 21:10:00
I've finally decided to jump on board and try Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) in my new home. Today I bought three GE Energy Smart 20 watt CFL's. The 20 watt CFL is equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent light bulb. These new bulbs are supposed to last 6 years or 10,000 hours of operation. An incandescent light bulb typically only lasts about 750 hours. That means you'd need 14 incandescent bulbs to each fluorescent bulb. The cost of the bulb is payed for just comparing bulbs not even considering the energy savings.Obviously using these bulbs is a great way to start living "green". Some may argue that the Mercury contained in them poses a significant environmental issue, however, with proper education people will realize that they need to be disposed of properly. These bulbs are also energy star certified.I put three of these in an overhead light fixture in our breakfast nook and I was quite impressed. The color of the light has improved drastically and the bulbs come on almo...

Pythagorean this Pecota that, this season has to be about exceeding expected outcomes. So: BOOOOOOOOOOOOF! Don't suck. TOP 1STFirst and foremost, it's Bert's birthday. And golly do I want that baseball cake hat that he's wearing. "Win one for me Boof. Come on BOOOOF". Seriously Boof, are you going to let Bert down? It's totally justified to include Bert's birthday in the scouting report. Really, Boof's going to need some kind of magical temporal alchemy to avoid those requisite 4.77 runs. I've been imagining Trey Hillman to resemble Sean Penn in Fast Times At Ridgemont High. It's a real disappointment that he's closer to Tom Selleck. Energy Efficient Fluorescent Light Bulbs Have a Dark Secret
2008-03-02 12:57:00
Energy Efficient Fluorescent Light Bulbs Have a Dark Secret: "Here's the latest chapter in the never-ending 'you just can't win' story. Two new reports issued by the state of Maine and the Vermont-based Mercury Policy Project indicate that those righteous, energy-efficient spiral light bulbs endorsed by green organizations can cause mercury poisoning. You have nothing to worry about while the bulbs burn, say the reports -- only if they break, when small amounts of mercury vapor can escape. The report warns that infants, pets, and pregnant women are at particular risk from exposure to the neurotoxin -- although even strapping adults might worry knowing that the researchers measured mercury levels 100 times in excess of federal guidelines for chronic exposure when they shattered 65 of the compact florescent lamps (CFLs). If the proportions hold true, that means that breaking even one bulb will expose you to more than six times the acceptable level."Link

Californians Advised on Mercury Risks from Compact Fluorescent Lamp Breakage - California Progress Report: "Recently released results of tests conducted by the State of Maine suggest that under certain conditions mercury vapor released from a broken compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) can pose a health risk. A new report prepared for the Mercury Policy Project and co-released by Sierra Club California concludes that, while sensitive populations should take extra precautions to reduce risks associated with breakage, CFLs can and should still be used in everyone’s homes until a nontoxic light bulb becomes available"Link

BodyByBlissMedia - » Fluorescent Lights Release Toxic Mercury Directly into the Environment: "There is an international campaign to ban the incandescent bulb in favor of alternative sources of lighting, most notably fluorescents. Unfortunately, fluorescents contain noxious chemicals including argon and mercury that are contaminating the environment, specifically through their accumulation in landfill waste. IN an effort to fight the effects of global warming and save precious energy, federal and state governments are attempting to find the best way to dispose of or recycle fluorescent light bulbs"Link
