CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights) And Environmental Issues
2008-04-24 15:54:00 CFL (Compact fluorescent lights) bulbs are seen as an environmentally friendly replacement for incandescent lights. But are they really as good for the environment as claimed? The two issues often raised as arguments against using CFL's are1 - It requires more energy to manufacture a CFL than an incandescent lamp.2 - CFL's contain mercury which can potentially end up polluting the environment. The first issue is fairly easily answered in that even though they do require additional energy to manufacture; this is soon offset as CFLs last a lot longer than incandescent bulb.On this issue of mercury pollution I have summarized some of the for and against points of view below:Arguments For CFL'sOverall mercury emission by compact fluorescent lamps is less than the mercury released into the atmosphere by coal-fired power generation for an equivalent incandescent lamp over the same period. This assumption is based on the electricity generated to run lighting in your local area being gene...
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
2008-04-20 21:10:00 I've finally decided to jump on board and try Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) in my new home. Today I bought three GE Energy Smart 20 watt CFL's. The 20 watt CFL is equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent light bulb. These new bulbs are supposed to last 6 years or 10,000 hours of operation. An incandescent light bulb typically only lasts about 750 hours. That means you'd need 14 incandescent bulbs to each fluorescent bulb. The cost of the bulb is payed for just comparing bulbs not even considering the energy savings.Obviously using these bulbs is a great way to start living "green". Some may argue that the Mercury contained in them poses a significant environmental issue, however, with proper education people will realize that they need to be disposed of properly. These bulbs are also energy star certified.I put three of these in an overhead light fixture in our breakfast nook and I was quite impressed. The color of the light has improved drastically and the bulbs come on almo...

Energy Efficient Fluorescent Light Bulbs Have a Dark Secret
2008-03-02 12:57:00 Energy Efficient Fluorescent Light Bulbs Have a Dark Secret: "Here's the latest chapter in the never-ending 'you just can't win' story. Two new reports issued by the state of Maine and the Vermont-based Mercury Policy Project indicate that those righteous, energy-efficient spiral light bulbs endorsed by green organizations can cause mercury poisoning. You have nothing to worry about while the bulbs burn, say the reports -- only if they break, when small amounts of mercury vapor can escape. The report warns that infants, pets, and pregnant women are at particular risk from exposure to the neurotoxin -- although even strapping adults might worry knowing that the researchers measured mercury levels 100 times in excess of federal guidelines for chronic exposure when they shattered 65 of the compact florescent lamps (CFLs). If the proportions hold true, that means that breaking even one bulb will expose you to more than six times the acceptable level."Link

Lighting: Compact Fluorescent Lamps
2008-02-04 07:58:00 Lighting: Compact Fluorescent Lamps Incandescent light bulbs have been around since the late 1800s and are still very popular. The basic idea behind incandescent bulbs is simple. Electricity runs through a filament making it very hot. The filament glows because of the high temperature ? it incandesces. The problem with incandescent light bulbs is that the heat wastes a lot of electricity. About 95 percent of the energy consumed by an incandescent bulb is converted to heat, while only five percent makes useful light.Incandescent bulbs are therefore very inefficient, producing only about 15 lumens per watt of input power. [A lumen is a unit measure of light energy.]Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use a completely different method to produce light. Inside the lamp are electrodes and a gas containing argon and mercury vapor. A stream of electrons flows through the ionized gas from one electrode to the other. These electrons collide with the mercury atoms and excite them.As the mercury a...

2007-12-20 07:28:00 Compact Fluorescent Bulbs « Climate Change, War, Poverty, Human Rights, Social Justice With Ontario banning Thomas Edison?s incandescent bulbs by 2012 and the rest of the country following suit, it?s time to take a closer look at compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).CFLs have been around since the 1980s, but technology has vastly improved over the past few years. Today?s bulbs come in many light colours - including the soft glow of incandescents - turn-on time is near instant, and some bulbs work on dimmers or tri-lights and fit into almost any fixture. As CFLs need a tiny bit of mercury to work, it is important to recycle them properly. Often stores where bulbs are purchased will taken them back. Your local hydro company will also know where to send them.Should the mercury issue prevent you from using CFLs? Not at all. The amount of mercury emitted by a coal-fired power plant to light an incandescent bulb is considerably higher than that found in a CFL. Not getting your power from...

2007-12-19 12:48:00 Compact Fluorescent to Become Mainstream » Consumerism Commentary: A Personal Finance Blog: "Congress will likely pass a bill this week that will have a positive effect on global warming. The bill requires requires light bulb manufacturers to create products that consume 25% to 30% less energy than the typical incandescent bulbs on the market today by 2012 to 2014. The goal doesn?t end there; by 2020, light bulbs must be 70% more efficient. Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) already meet this objective, but they cost four times comparable incandescent bulbs on average. The good news is they last much, much longer. The difference in price is easily recovered due to the bulb?s long life. Additionally, replacing one incandescent bulb with a fluorescent will save an average consumer $5 on their electricity bill each year. With bulbs costing $4, there is no argument that a switch to compact fluorescent isn?t worth it.I have compact fluorescent bulbs in most of the sockets in my apartment. I...

During this Instructable I will be replacing the word; Compact Fluorescent, with CFLs, to make it shorter, and less repetitive. As you might already know, CFLs use less energy than a regular Incandescent Light Bulb. Not only do they save energy, they also last much longer! What more could you ask for? Though the price of the CFL is higher than an Incandescent bulb, the extra money spent is easily saved because of the longer output and energy saved. QuickFact: In the United States, a CFL can save over US$30 in electricity costs over the lamp's lifetime compared to an incandescent lamp and save 2000 times their own weight in Greenhouse Gases. All Energy Star CFLs use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer."

2007-12-10 06:40:00 How much Mercury is in Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs, watch batteries, and coal-fired power plants? - The World's Biggest Show & TellIn order to disprove the myths about CFLs, let's begin at the beginning. When CFLs are created, manufacturers dose the bulb with a small amount of mercury. This mercury, when electrically stimulated, releases UV light, which subsequently reacts with a phosphor coating to create visible light. Thus mercury is an essential part of every CFL; without it, the bulbs would not produce light. The typical dose of mercury is about the size of a pen tip, and these doses have been getting smaller and smaller. One reason for this is that the laws resulting from the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive have made it illegal for CFLs in Europe to contain more than 5 milligrams (mg) of mercury. In the United States, there are no such laws limiting the amount of mercury in lightbulbs as yet, but members of the National Electrical Manufacturers As...

2007-12-02 12:36:00 WorldNetDaily: Fluorescent vs. incandescent? Environmentalists can't decideWASHINGTON ? Al Gore says switching from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescents can help save the planet from global warming.California, Canada and the European Union are so persuaded he's right, the three governments are in the process of banning the sale of incandescent light bulbs, following the trailblazing paths of Fidel Castro in Cuba and Hugo Chavez in Venezuela.Even the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is on board, urging American citizens to do their part for the environment and switch to the twisty little CFL bulbs that last longer and use less electricity. But opposition is building among other environmentalists who say the threat of mercury contamination as a result of hundreds of millions of broken CFLS, each containing about 5 milligrams of the highly toxic substance, outweighs any benefits from a switch from Thomas Edison's trusty old invention

2007-11-28 18:38:00 Compact fluorescent light bulbs contaminate the environment with 30,000 pounds of mercury each yearA compact fluorescent light is a type of energy-saving bulb that fits into a standard light bulb socket or plugs into a small lighting fixture, and right now, compact fluorescents seem to be gaining in popularity. But did you know they can also be toxic to your home and the environment?Fluorescent lights are filled with a gas containing low-pressure mercury vapor and argon, or sometimes even krypton. The inner surface of the bulb is coated with a fluorescent coating made of varying blends of metallic and rare earth phosphor salts. Fluorescent light bulbs are more energy efficient than incandescent light bulbs of an equivalent brightness, and the efficiency of fluorescent lighting owes much to low-pressure mercury photon discharges. But fluorescents don't produce a steady light, and they burn out more quickly when cycled frequently; they also contain items such as fluorine, neon, and l...

2007-11-27 15:48:00 The Best Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs: Scientific Lab Test vs. Incandescent - Popular Mechanics: "The compact fluorescent light bulb revolution nearly occurred back in the early 1990s. When CFLs first hit the market in force, consumers bought them in large numbers ? but they hated them. The bulbs were too big for many fixtures, expensive (up to $25 each) and they threw a dim, antiseptic light that paled next to the warmth of good old-fashioned incandescent bulbs. Now, a new CFL revolution is at hand. Retail giants are pushing hard for the bulbs ? Wal-Mart hopes to sell 100 million CFLs by the end of the year. In California, a legislator recently proposed banning the sale of incandescent light bulbs in the state by 2012. All the old benefits of CFLs are still significant ? more so, in fact. They can use less than one-third the electricity of incandescent bulbs of equivalent brightness and last up to nine years. The new bulbs are smaller and far cheaper (about $5 each) than their p...
