Speculative flyers: Delta (DAL) and US Airways (LCC)
2008-08-05 07:00:00
"If there’s one sector that stands to benefit handsomely from a further slide in oil or, at least, a moderation in crude’s rally: the airlines," explains energy sector expert Elliott Gue (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2240). In The Energy Strategist (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2240), he says, "Airlines may make a terrible long-term investment but can be an outstanding short-term trade." Here he looks at Delta Air Lines (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=dal) (NYSE: DAL (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=dal)) and, for the even more speculatively-inclined, US Airways (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=lcc) (NYSE: LCC (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=lcc))."Some investors will rightfully cringe from any mention of this sector; after all, the airlines have consistently lost money throughout their post-deregulation history. "Most of the majors have declared bankruptcy on multiple...

Eastern conference final: Flyers avoid the sweep.
2008-05-16 06:33:00
The Philadelphia Flyers avoided the elimination yesterday in their series with the Pittsburgh Penguins. With a productive first period, the ''Broad Street Bullies'' were finally able to establish their physical presence in this series. The Flyers were solid early on and it was good for three unanswered goals from the 9th to the 18th minute the first period. First Joffrey Lupul at even strenght, then Daniel Briere and Jeff Carter each during a man-advantage.With the lead, the Flyers did focused on Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marian Hossa. The constant bodychecks managed to get under the Penguins stars players' skin. There were many retaliations from Crosby during the second part of the game.Only Jordan Staal managed to beat Martin Biron yesterday. But he did in fact managed to beat him twice during the third period. So with just under six minutes to go the Penguins were only one goal behind. A quiet and anxious crowd started wondering if their team could hold on.But the Fly...

Make it Three - Penguins Beat Flyers 4-1
2008-05-14 11:05:00
The Philly faithful 4-2, 4-2, 4-1...it would almost seem the offense over the past three games has been one-sided. Philly can blame it on Coburn/Timonen, but frankly the scores don't represent the closeness of play throughout these games. With the exception of Game 1, all have been relatively

Penguins-Flyers Storylines
2008-05-05 12:06:00
Now that the Pittsburgh Penguins have defeated the New York Rangers, we can all focus on the Eastern conference final between the Pens and the Philadelphia Flyers. For those of you seeking storylines for the series, let me be of assistance of what you will hear from sportscasters and writers over the next week.Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are both located in Pennsylvania, or some variation of this such as the battle of Pennsylvania or the Keystone State rivalry. Let?s face it: this is truly a battle between fans that choose pop versus fans who say soda.In the Eastern conference semi-finals, Jordan Staal of the Penguins defeated his older brother Marc Staal of the Rangers. Jordan Staal has no siblings on the Flyers. (Or does he? [dramatic pause] No he does not.)The Flyers? R.J. Umberger is the Pittsburgh area. Specifically, Umberger is from Plum, which was on of the high schools that my high school faced regularly in sporting events (the last part will not be mentioned during any ...

Capitals upset Flyers in game six, pivotal game 7 tonight
2008-04-22 22:21:00
The Washington Capitals faced the hardest step of their comeback effort head on and emerged triumphant, scoring four straight goals in a 4-2 game six victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Alex Ovechkin broke his scoring drought in the third period with two goals to clinch the road upset at Wachovia Center. What's left for the Washington Capitals is a return to their home at Cup crazy Verizon Center tonight for the game seven finale of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Should the Capitals win their third straight must win game to finally advance, they would then be matched against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the conference semifinals.Tonight's game seven marks the first one ever to be hosted by the Capitals at Verizon Center, a measure of just how dry the hockey landscape has been here in recent years. Capitals win needed game five; game six set @ Flyers
2008-04-21 11:37:00
The Washington Capitals won the first of three potential do or die games Saturday afternoon, dominating the Philadelphia Flyers by a 3-2 mark in game five. Alexander Semin, Nicklas Backstrom and Sergei Fedorov all scored for the Capitals while goalie Cristobal Huet helped the team withstand a late third period Flyers surge. While the Capitals victory was impressive, the team remains behind three games to two in the series headed into the all too crucial game six. Monday evening's game six in Philadelphia is another must win outing for the Capitals, despite the fact that home teams have won four of five games in the series to date. Washington will have to break that pattern and force a road victory to reach a game seven finale.Game six of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series will air on Comcast SportsNet regionally and WJFK/106.7 & WFED/1050 radio Monday evening at 7 p.m. EDT. In a late switch, Versus will NOT carry Capitals-Flyers game six due to coverage of the Boston/Montrea...

Capitals lose 2ot game four to Flyers, face do or die match
2008-04-18 18:34:00
The Washington Capitals came out with more focus and energy for game four of their playoff series against the Philadelphia Flyers but an elongated double overtime contest yielded the same losing result. Philadelphia came out with a 4-3 result to take command of the best of seven series at three games to one.Washington seemed poised to win game four and even the series before giving up a late regulation goal set up by a Caps' penalty for having too many men on the ice. The Capitals still mounted a threat but couldn't break through in the first sudden death overtime, finally tiring out in OT number two. What's left for the Washington Capitals is a return home to Verizon Center this Saturday afternoon for a do or die game. Another loss would eliminate the Capitals from the postseason. Hope still remains though if only because this squad has already proven its ability to perform in elimination contests.Start time is 1 p.m. on NBC national television (WRC/4 locally) and radio stations ...

Hartnell stirs things up for down and dirty Flyers
2008-04-16 19:26:00
The Philadelphia Flyers can still get down and dirty. After the Flyers blew Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarter-final to the Washington Capitals, they got in the Caps' faces in Game 2 on Sunday. Little Daniel Briere accidentally on purpose got his stick on Capitals goalie Cristobal Huet as he cruised through the crease. Later, Scott Hartnell, blew over Huet like he was a speed bump and pile drove him to the ice. Then he appeared to try to yank Huet's mask off. Hartnell, one of the NHL's better agitators, also cleared his throat and offered up a few verbs and adjectives to the fallen goalie. Hartnell refused Monday to say what he'd said to Huet during the Flyers' 2-0 win that evened the series 1-1. All we know is Huet was steamed and looked like he wanted to cuff the Flyer intruder with his blocker.Hartnell isn't your classic disturber, because he can score. He had 24 goals this year. He hits hard, and normally hits clean — except for that shoulder block he exec...
Capitals listless in game three defeat to Flyers
2008-04-16 17:19:00
The Washington Capitals put together another seemingly listless performance in a game three playoff defeat to the overpowering Philadelphia Flyers, 6-3. The Caps are now down two games to one in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series, needing to win next time out to have a realistic chance at advancing to the conference semis.Washington scored a quick early goal to erase a 1-0 first period deficit, signaling what could have been a different kind of game. However, the Flyers ran off two straight goals within 17 seconds near the end of the first period to regain a lead that would never be relinquished.Aside from the final minutes of game one, star Alex Ovechkin's line has been a virtual non-factor in the series. That must change for this Thursday's game four (available on Comcast SportsNet, Versus & WJFK/106.7) or else dreams of D.C. truly becoming Hockeytown USA will have to be set aside once again. ----Relevant links: Washington Post, Washington Times

Capitals shut out in game two playoff loss to Flyers
2008-04-14 00:23:00
The Washington Capitals were shut down and shut out, outworked in a 2-0 playoff loss to Philadelphia. The Flyers took control of game two of the opening series early with first period goals from R.J. Umberger and Jeff Carter off goalie Cristobal Huet. The second goal sequence was triggered when Mike Green lost the puck on a turnover. The Caps' goalie stopped Philadelphia the rest of the way but with the Capitals shuttered the whole way through by counterpart goalie Martin Biron, the early damage proved fatal. Alexander Ovechkin's late first game fury was followed by a second game lethargy, a pattern repeated for too many Capitals players on the day. ----On a side note, the so-called NBC curse came through in full effect. The Capitals have not won a game nationally televised on NBC this season, continuing a pattern of difficulty on the big television stage. The game two defeat ties the best of seven series at one game apiece, headed into the Wachovia Center this Tuesday night. Washington Capitals open playoffs tonight vs. Flyers
2008-04-11 22:40:00
The long wait for the Washington Capitals to play postseason hockey is finally over as the team opens up its Stanley Cup first round series tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Capitals-Flyers series is the last one of the NHL conference quarterfinal matchups to launch up play, adding to the already red hot sense of anticipation.Red may be the operative word for the Washington Capitals as Verizon Center figures to be a sea of red this night, replicating the scene for the Caps' final three regular season games.----Tonight's occasion marks the first NHL playoff action ever for presumptive MVP Alex Ovechkin and many of his teammates. It's the first NHL postseason as a head coach for Bruce Boudreau as well though he did lead the Hershey Bears to a minor league title. The team's NHL playoff experience comes instead by way of import from veteran Sergei Federov.Cristobal Huet, whose goalkeeping helped propel the Capitals' late season surge into the playoffs, will hope to do th...

Ottawa's Murray: Penguins lost on purpose to Flyers
2008-04-08 18:08:00
Ottawa coach and general manager Bryan Murray suggested after Senators practice Monday that the Pittsburgh Penguins manipulated their first-round playoff matchup by purposely losing, 2-0, Sunday at Philadelphia in their regular-season finale according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I knew what was going on. You guys all know -- they wanted to play Ottawa," Murray said. "That's fine. "That was fairly obvious from the drop of the puck."
