2009-03-19 15:40:00 From Engadget: We've had a lot of fun with Terrafugia over the last year or so, but we weren't exactly holding our breath in anticipation of the Transition's maiden flight. That said, we're definitely psyched to hear that the "roadable aircraft" went airborne in a super-secret test

Problems with the Flying Car
2008-01-17 17:35:00 Have you ever wished for a flying car? I know I have. But just give it a bit of thought, how great would flying cars really be? There would have to be so much associated technology developed along with it to even make it feasible as a mode of transport. Not to mention the fact that you'd have to find a method of propulsion smaller and safer than blades of metal spinning around at head height. Here's five problems with the idea I came up with off the top of my head:1. Fuel expense2. Lack of suitable parking3. Mid-air collisions4. Driving tests would be impossible5. Car trouble could be fatalI think the first problem to overcome is cost. The cost of fuel (nuclear or otherwise), the cost of insurance (crash protection, unscheduled landing cover), the cost of learning to fly, the cost of renting a landing pad, the emotional cost of scraping your daughter up after she slams into a building while applying her makeup. It seems that the flying car is a dream that is destined to never be re...

PAL-V flying car ready for production
2007-10-04 04:40:00 John Bakker has invested 6 years of his time in developing a vehicle concept that can fly as well as drive: PAL-V (Personal Air and Land Vehicle). A dream Henry Ford already had when he built the first car. This will be a revolution in door to door mobility in the near future. In countries with underdeveloped infrastructure it means safe and faster transportation but also in developed countries it will safe people lots of time. The market response is huge. Already 2 mln hits have been recorded on the website. Daily mails are received from people that want to buy one. People have professional applications like surveillance, mobility for aid organisations, aid in post war situations, but also for private use bringing faster transportation or just big fun. The PAL-V is a solution to increasing congestion in our cities, highways and skyways, On the ground, the slim line, aerodynamic 3-wheel vehicle is as comfortable as a luxury car. But has the agility of a motorbike, thanks to its pa...
Failed Experiments with the Flying Car

Eco friendly flying car
2007-09-04 17:00:00 Sounds pretty well un eco friendly, but it is supposed to be green even though it has eight wankel style engines, reaches a top speed of 50 mph and has a 900 mile range limit. There are plans for a more comfortable enclosed car/plane with just four engines. But the flying saucer type machine is the one that we are interested in, the company plans to build around 250 of these vehicles a year, which will even need the driver or pilot to have a pilots licence because the machine will only fly at about nine feet off the ground. Of course I do not like the idea of one these in the hands of a drink driver, because these flying cars could cause an untold amount of damage. Priced at around $90,000. NASA "flying car" contest
2007-08-13 16:59:00 NASA crowns winner in $250k "flying car" contest Posted Aug 12th 2007 10:45PM by Conrad Quilty-HarperFiled under: Transportation Flying cars come pretty high up the average gadget geek's wishlist, so it's pretty encouraging to see NASA funding a $250,000 contest that could eventually produce a pioneering vehicle that can fly and drive. Although none of the winners this time around can actually achieve the two feats, they all have features that tend towards the PAV (or Personal Aircraft Vehicle) area of the General Aviation spectrum. The winner was the Pipistrel Virus, a $70,000 aircraft that can do 50 MPG and take off on short runways, whilst having a top speed of 170 MPH. The industry still seems to have a while to go yet, seeing as NASA awarded a prize to the Cessna 172, which has been flying in one form or another for practically half a century.source : engadget.com

World's First Flying Car Enters Production
2007-07-26 11:17:00 World's First Flying Car Enters ProductionIn a moment we've been waiting for since the first time we saw The Jetsons, the first flying car has finally gone on sale. Just like the car George uses to drop off the kids, the Moller M200G Volantor is shaped like a saucer. To avoid the need to pass FAA regulations, the civilian version of the Volantor is restricted to heights of 10 feet, but can travel as fast as 50mph and fly for up to 90minutes. Military or rescue versions could be unencumbered by such limitations. Depending on the number of orders, prices could be as low as $90,000. Video of the Volantor in action after the jump. The Moller M200 Flying CarMoller, better known for the yet-to-reach-production Skycar, have already started work on the 67 orders received so far. They envision uses including extreme off roading - the Volantor is unencumbered by any ground-based obstacles - or as a ferry between a yacht and the land. In the long run, they'd like to see the vehicle used as t...

dude, where's my flying car?
2007-06-24 02:17:00 Terrafugia is building this prototype for a flying car. Will it ever make it to mass market production? Well, I doubt it: private airplanes are relatively inexpensive, and everyone who has a private airplane already has a car. Those people who want to fly will generally go for an airplane, as the performance will be much better than a flying car, and very few will accept a hybrid car/airplane if it means that the performance in either mode is lower than the performance of a regular airplane or a regular car. However, there may be a niche market for people with eclectic tastes.

It's no flying car, but it gets the job done :)
2007-04-20 07:37:00 For what feels like forever, the media and movies have been saying that personal flights big revolution has been coming. When 2000 hit we thought we would have our personal antigravity packs and cars. Apparently atleast one aviator has decided he's sick and tired of waiting, Larry Neal has been selling kit gyroplanes through his company The Butterfly LLCD for several years. Basically small light aircraf that can take off and land in a very small area, what's even better is the propellor even when unpowered is more effective than a parachute in a powerloss situation making it extremely safe! But the gyroplaners were hard to move around, required disassembly for transportation and then needed to be transported on a trailer. Neal decided that this wasn't what was needed he needed an easily driveable solution. So was born the Super Sky Cycle, with his newly patented foldable rotor system, rear wheel suspension for extremely soft landings and a transmission that is switch...

Flying car may be available as soon as 2009
2007-03-21 10:51:00 It looks like the flying cars seen in The Jetsons & other cartoons or sci-fi shows may soon be a reality. A Dutch company (PAL-V) is hoping to have a wheeled vehicle available as soon as 2009. The car is like a 3-wheeled gyrocopter. It's blades fold into the roof, and it has a U-shaped tail & propeller on the back (see picture below). When on the road, it will lean into turns, go from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, and travel 340 miles on one tank of gas. It will fly below 4,000 feet (so it's out of commercial airspace), have a maximum airspeed of 195 km/h (120 mph), and will take off in less than 50 metres (165 feet). Specs are below the main picture. Click for full size It really looks quite exciting. Just think of being able to fly over those traffic jams in peak hour, or travelling between cities at 120 mph with no traffic lights to worry about. I'm just wondering how much it will sell for. I guess we'll know in 2009.--Things People Said - School Excuse Letters:"Please excu...
The Dutch Flying Car Ready for Take-Off
2007-03-21 08:29:00 Flying Cars? Surely, your ears may perk up with this bit of news. Various technologies are rampant and let?s face it: today, the sky?s not the limit anymore. The modern-day Dutch automaker that?s christened as the ?Flying Car? company recently announced that it has found bigwigs to invest its start-up operation and a real-flying vehicle (gasp!) may be soaring above the horizon. The PAL-V which stands for Personal Air and Land Vehicle and the brainchild of the Dutch Flying Car company is basically a three-wheeled morphing of a car, motorcycle and gyrocopter with a patented ?titling? system all rolled into one. Picture yourself in a The Jetsons cartoon, flying to work and other places surrounded by flying cars. You can bet your two cents that this vehicle might be just the stepping stone for making all those flying technologies come true. Well, come to think of it, a flying submarine is just absurd. But whatever the case, the vehicle?s performance parts are attributed to its rotor and pr...

Get Ready for Flying Cars on year 2010
2007-02-01 10:15:02 When population on earth getting bigger and bigger every year, even people can?t afford car anymore because there will soon be no place on the earth that you can place your car and you know what?s the solution? In order to solve this problem in the future Rafi Yoeli, the founder of Urban Aeronautics created a flying car code name X-Hawk and he claimed that this car will be in the market on 2010. Rafi Yoeli also said that this project has been started for years already, but recently he managed to get a rudimentary prototype to fly a few feet off the ground and had find interest from Textorn?s Bell Helicopter for partnership. Watch the picture after the break. The main things that enable X-Hawk to fly off the ground is a special fan that enable the car to achieve the speed and maneuverability of a helicopter ? 155 mph, 12000-foot altitude, two hours of flight time and vertical take off and landing. Although X-Hawk still not perfectly unique, but Rafi Yoeli said that they will begin ...

Flying car to dump on TSA
2006-12-18 22:30:04 The other day I met a man that is developing a flying car. The car is called the FSC-1 and it is a hybrid between a car and a plane. The inventor of the plane has been working with NASA for over a decade and he really knows his stuff. According to his website, “the FSC-1 will obviously save time when considering the amount of time to drive or fly commercial airlines in this day of baggage delays and time consuming security checks, and rental cars. However, the FSC-1 means much more than that. The FSC-1 saves lives. It was reported by the FAA that 91% of air accidents in 2005 were related to bad weather. The primary reason pilots attempt to fly in bad weather is the belief that they have no other choice but to try ? ?I?ve-got-to-get-there-itis?. The FSC-1 changes the entire story. The FSC-1 is all about giving you choices! When the weather at the destination is unfavorable, you can simply land nearby and drive.” I realize that there have been other “flying cars̶...
