Folder View Adds Recently Used Folders to Windows Explorer
2008-05-20 18:03:00 Ever navigate to a folder deep in the hierarchy and then close Windows Explorer only to realize you forgot to do something and need to go back? I do it all the time and it annoys the hell out of me. So much so, that I started to write an application that would keep track of the last couple of folders accessed in Windows Explorer so I could quickly navigate back to them. It's not a trivial process to do this but I finally figured it out. Just about the time I was ready to put together a redistributable I ran across Folder View. Folder View is a freebie that hooks into Windows Explorer and adds an extra toolbar with shortcuts to common locations. However, in my mind, the most useful feature is the "recent folders" drop-down. Having the last dozen or so folders you visited is sure handy. But then it goes one better and modifies the common open file dialogs to include the same items as the Windows Explorer toolbar. This makes adding attachments to messages easier. Highly recommended....

Followup: RIAA loses on shared folders
2008-05-01 01:05:00 As a followup to our previous story on the RIAA's legal woes, now one of their fundamental legal premises has been denied. From PCWorld:The Recording Industry Association of America suffered a legal setback this week in a music piracy case where a judge ruled that the sole act of making a music file available in a "shared folder" does not violate copyright laws.In Atlantic v. Howell, the RIAA made the legal assertion that a "sound recording" that is ripped to a computer and stored in any kind of a shared folder is unauthorized. This was an interesting statement because a shared folder can be a very broad category that wasn't entirely made clear by the RIAA.This RIAA theory on "making available" files in "shared folders" wasn't taken lightly by much of the Internet as many blogs and other sites provided misinformation that the act of ripping tracks from a CD to a shared folder was now deemed illegal. To be clear the RIAA doesn't considering ripping illegal, rather loading up MP3s ...

Use Solution Folders
2008-04-18 15:06:00 In reading Scott Hanselman's blog this morning, I ran across an interesting tid bit. ASIDE: Not enough people use "Solution Folders" in Visual Studio. Seriously, folks, just right-click and "Add | New Solution Folder," start dragging things around and bask in the tidiness He's referring to how "tidy" the xUnit.NET code he's reviewing here. It's a great point however. I'm currently working on a project that has 71 project files in it. Way too many in mind opinion. And the reason I suspect is that most developers don't know (or don't care) that they can organize their solutions and projects into folders. Projects often get used organize code but it's an expensive proposition. It takes much longer to load solutions with lots of projects. Take the same number of files and put them in one project and Visual Studio loads the solution much faster. Multiple projects means multiple project settings. If you have ever maintained a large solution you know what I mean. It's easi...

How to lock folders without using any software
2008-04-02 17:53:00 Here are the steps to lock (not actually lock but to change the pointer address) a folder in windows xp: 1. Assume I want to lock a folder named 'new' which I have created in c drive. 2. Go to the path (in this case its c:) create a new notepad entry. 3. Then edit that entry by typing in it the following: ren new new.{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08-002B30309D} 4. Save it as lock.bat 5. Now if you run the .bat file your icon 'new' should have changed. Try clicking it now. 6. For creating a key, open an other notepad entry and write: ren new.{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08-002B30309D} new 7. Save it as key.bat and run it.Like it? Want more tips?
