2008-05-21 01:58:00
Laurie Zuckerman is a health and business writer and recently co-authored The Fattening of America: How The Economy Makes Us Fat, If It Matters, and What to Do About It. She blogs with co-author, Eric Finkelstein, at www.fatteningofamerica.com.  Guest Blogger Laurie Zuckerman--You know how the fantasy of special time spent with your kids often doesn’t match the reality? There’s the hike through the woods that ends with a sobbing child in your arms. The ballet that your kid sleeps though. The drive home from the zoo with the screaming children in the back. There is one fantasy, however, that beats out my expectations every time. That is the time I spend out in my vegetable garden with my daughter Yana. It just gets better every year. At age three, she munched on lettuce (rinsed off with the hose) while making mud pies. At age four, she began making her own “burritos,” inventive recipes such as a radish and a snap pea, wrapped up tight in a piece of spinach...
Dog Food Labeling Better Than Human Food , Industry Claims
2008-04-21 14:38:00
By M. BrunoThe dog food industry announced in a recent statement that labeling on pet and dog food is actually better than labeling requirements on food for human consumption. This would be the best news that we have heard since the beginning of the dog food recall that has claimed the lives of thousands of dogs, while an ever growing number of dogs continue to suffer from kidney failure after eating contaminated dog food.Let?s take a look at how the pet dog food industry supports this claim. The dog food industry has the option of including ingredients that they deem safe and nutritious in the dog food that they produce and sell. Some of those ingredients are:Dead, dying, diseased and downed animals. Well, this confuses me a bit. I don?t know of any regulation permitting the inclusion of these unsuitable proteins on any human food label. The fact is that these 4Ds, can not be used in human food but are used by dog food manufacturers. Ever see those listed on a dog food label?Rendered ...

2008-02-16 04:28:00
While surfing the stumbleupon health page I found a link to this YouTube video which was titled "How the Food Industry is deceiving you". The actual title of the documentary appeared to be "How to get fat without really trying", a Peter Jennings report, for ABC in 2004. Though already 4 years old, the documentary is still just as relevant today as it was then. Food industry has been influencing what we eat for years and it still does today.

2007-10-25 16:46:00
India is rapidly emerging as a critical market for Australia’s food industry, according to a new Australian Government-funded report launched in New Delhi this month. Minister for Trade, Warren Truss, and Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Peter McGauran, said the report, Strengthening the India-Australia corridor in select food and agribusiness sectors, showed increasing consumer demand among the sub-continent’s burgeoning middle class. Mr Truss said this demand was creating huge opportunities for businesses in the Australian food sector. “Indian food retail is a multi-billion dollar industry, estimated to be worth around $233 billion, with food being the largest category of consumer spending. The sub-continent’s 300-million strong middle class, with its growing affluence and changing lifestyle, is driving growth in organised food retail and food services, with organised retail expected to increase by 30 per cent over the next five years,” Mr Truss ...

"The expected outcome of the Foresight Report on Obesity sugges...

The Natural Food Industry
2007-09-16 17:29:00

Meanwhile, the growing market has attracted large corporations which play a vital role in policy, price, and enforcement. The question remains whether these foods will retain their "wholesome" cache or become merely another series of labels in a crowded supermarket.
