Meat Recall Reveals Sickness in Meat Industry
2008-02-20 03:30:00 In the wake of the recall of 143.4 million pounds of beef from the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company, the USDA wants to assure you that the cows in question were not necessarily "sick" but just "non-ambulatory," meaning the reason they had to be moved with a forklift to the slaughterhouse may have been because their legs were broken or injured and not necessarily because the cows were "sick." It's illegal to put meat from "downed" or "non-ambulatory" cattle into the food supply because it has a higher risk of being contaminated with diseases and bacteria like mad cow disease, E.coli, and salmonella. While the animals themselves may not have been sick, the people responsible for this level of animal cruelty definitely are. It's disturbing to think about the suffering these animals underwent and how long it might've been going on before they were caught in the act. Animals that are giving up their lives to be on your dinner table deserve, at the very least, to be treated...

REPORT: CONGRESS MUST ACT ON FOOD SAFETY
2007-11-06 15:01:00 Comprehensive farm-to-table reforms neededCongress needs to enact a comprehensive farm-to-table shake-up of the nation's food safety system, according to a new white paper published by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).As many as 5,000 Americans die each year from foodborne illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Another 325,000 are hospitalized, and 76 million become ill from unsafe food, the report notes. These illnesses and deaths are almost entirely preventable, with appropriate safeguards from farm to the kitchen. In its white paper, CSPI reviews a dozen food safety bills now being considered by Congress. While the majority of bills introduced so far address import inspection and include mandatory recall authority and civil penalties, many do not include mandatory process controls and government-enforced performance standards for both domestic and imported foods.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/-news...

Congress Strengthens Pet Food Safety Regulations
2007-10-24 09:08:00 Legislation passed by Congress in September contains food safety provisions requiring the Food and Drug Administration to set ingredient and processing standards for pet food. The new law, which applies also to human food, establishes an early warning system to alert the public about unsafe pet food. Congress directed the FDA to improve communication with the public, companies, and professional organizations during recalls, including the posting of information and a searchable, user-friendly recall list on the agency's Web site. A reportable food registry must be set up so the FDA can issue alerts about foods that could harm people or animals. The agency is to provide more detailed reports to Congress on food inspections as well. Under the new law, state and federal authorities must work together to improve food safety programs. Food companies are obligated to quickly report contaminations of their product after determining there is a problem and to make records available so contam...

Food safety: Wheat gluten and illness as a metaphor for the state of our fo
2007-09-03 08:53:00 Gluten sensitivity and celiac disease are part of a hidden epidemic. Most people are unfamiliar with the term gluten. This improved after the recent outbreak of cats and dogs dying in the U.S. from pet food made with wheat gluten from China contaminated by the chemical melamine. Gluten has been linked to various autoimmune conditions. Links to food or chemicals to fibromyalgia, autism spectrum disorder, chronic fatigue, IBS, multiple sclerosis, and headaches appear strong but difficult to prove. Is there a link between what we eat and the epidemic of unexplained illness? Is our food supply safe? Are organic foods just more expensive? Are we experiencing irrational fears about processed and non-organic foods that are less expensive and just as safe? Watch this chilling video about the future of food. There is a debate whether allergic or eosinophilic esophagitis is increasing or just being more commonly recognized. Autism appears to rising. One estimate is 1/166. Celiac disease is est...
China Food Safety: The Science And The Politics
2007-08-15 19:12:00 The Wall Street Journal just ran an excellent "commentary" on Chinese/American/International- food safety. The commentary is entitled, "Food Fights," [subscription may be required] and it is written by James Rice, Vice President and China country manager for Tyson Foods, Inc. Rice's commentary starts out by stating that what constitutes "safety" is not a "simple question, given that safety standards frequently vary from country to country, and for many reasons." He then notes that politics can compound the problem as safety standards "can become a back door to protectionism. The phenomenon even has a name: technical trade barriers:" Everyone plays this game. The European Union enforces safety regulations that lack support in international science; its standards on hormones prevent the import of U.S. beef, and rules on naturally occurring aflatoxin mold blocks all imports of corn and nut products from Africa. China enforces a zero-tolerance rule on salmonella and the feed-additi...

China Food Safety -- Something Less Than Heaven

Post is entitled "The People's Heaven" and it makes for a great read. To grossly summarize, China is like the US at the time of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Concludes with the following thought: "That’s because most Chinese can’t afford not to eat their country’s food. As a matter of fact, can we?"

Mike Rogers supports Food Safety
2007-07-19 15:10:00 Most folks in East Alabama, especially our farmers, know agriculture is a major industry for our state. Of course, this year the drought has severely harmed our farmers, and will no doubt impact our state’s agriculture production. In better years, though, annually farm and forestry products typically total about $5 billion for Alabama, with almost half of this total belonging to poultry. The health and safety of these chickens, as well as all our other major food products, is a major concern for our farmers and our nation. Any outbreak or terrorist attack that could disrupt this poultry production or contaminate our food chain – whether in years of drought or normal rains – could not only be devastating for our population, but would also harm our economy locally and nationally. Recently I attended a Homeland Security field hearing in Pennsylvania on the issue of food safety. The hearing brought together noted agriculture experts to talk about our nation’s efforts to prepare...

Smart Food Safety Practices Can Avoid Summertime Foodborne Illness
2007-07-13 11:08:00 Smart Food Safety PracticesNew Jersey residents reminded to keep a few guidelines in mind to help prevent food borne illness. As summer truly gets underway, more and more families and neighbors will be taking advantage of the weather to cook and eat outdoors. But feeding a large group of family and friends when the weather is hot can make food safety a challenge.Food borne illness is a significant public health concern in the United States. In fact, around 76 million cases of food sickness, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths occur each year. Especially at risk are young children, the elderly and people with diseases that involve the immune system, such as asthma, arthritis, cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and liver or kidney diseases. "Foodborne illness cases rise during the summer because bacteria thrive in warm temperatures," said Commissioner Jacobs. "For example, what many people call-stomach flu' or intestinal virus' is often caused by food poisoning, which ...

Cleaning Up China's Food Safety -- Humiliation Required
2007-07-12 19:54:00 Beijing based journalist, Wang Feng, has an absolutely superb article up today as a "Guest Analyst" on the PostGlobal Blog. The article is entitled, "'International Humiliation' on Food Safety May Be in China's Best Interest," and its thesis is that we should not expect much in the way of improved food safety in China until it loses way more face. I completely agree. The article starts out talking about the Chinese government's approach to diethylene glycol in toothpaste: Diethylene glycol, a toxic industrial solvent, is often used in China to replace the similar but more expensive glycerine, a harmless food additive. Chinese-made toothpaste containing diethylene glycol has been discovered and recalled all over the world. But until this morning, Chinese officials had insisted that a small amount of diethylene glycol in toothpaste was harmless to the human body. Never mind that a Chinese shipment of it was blamed for the deaths of over 100 Panamanians after a drug make...

American Food Safety Issues: The Death of Common Sense
2007-05-25 15:50:00 As some of you foodies out there may know, in March 2007 the food conglomerate ConAgra had to recall its Peter Pan Peanut Butter products due to salmonella content. This morning, I happened upon a consumer advocate website called SPOCKO'S BRAIN. The site has a post called frightening food facts. What caught my eye about this post was the revelation that the "federal government can issue mandatory recalls for tires and toys but not food...except for baby formula..." Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa???!!! This is another example of big business dictating how the govenment conducts itself. If you wish to speak out about this idiocy, go to the site of the FDA. The food we put in our bodies should demand as much safety as the tires we put on our cars!

The Scary Truth about Food Safety
1969-12-31 19:00:00 If you stop for a moment to think about how your mother cooked for you as a child, you might be surprised that you made it as far as you did. It seemed that no one knew about germs, so raw chicken and that night’s bread loaves were both on the same cutting board without a second thought. But times have changed and we’re a bit more particular about our foods and food safety. With headlines everyday about e Coli and other dangerous germs in foods, your best line of defense begins in the same place your recipes do. Everything Has Germs Right now, your hands have germs on them. That knob you just turned to wash your hands at the sink? Germs there too. For a moment, let’s be realistic. Everything has germs on it. But while this is the case, that doesn’t mean we should give up. Here are some easy ways to keep germs at a minimum: - Wash your hands with warm soapy water for the same length of time as - Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Dry them completely with a...
