Knute Rockne Named to List of Those Who Transcended College Football Game
2008-06-21 18:04:00 Knute Rockne remains a giant of the game nearly eight decades after his premature death. Had he been only a master strategist, the Rockne name would not carry the weight that it does. Had he been only a master showman and salesman, he wouldn't be remembered any more than the guy who invented the homecoming parade. What makes Rockne one of the faces of college football is that he played both roles

Croatia make it '0 & 2' for the Euro hosts
2008-06-08 20:41:00 EURO 2008: Austria 0:1 Croatia (Modric pen 4') Prater Stadium, ViennaCroatia proved their home and away wins over England were no fluke with a 1-0 win over co-hosts Austria in Vienna, thanks to soon-to-be Spurs man Luka Modric's spot-kick.Austria, despite the backing of a sold-out Prater, confirmed fans' worst fears by conceding in under four minutes of their Euro 2008 debut. The Croats tore into their under-fire hosts from the off and looked the more ravenous as well as the silkier passers of the two sides in the first half. The Austrians enjoyed a far better second half in terms of possession and chances, forcing Croatian goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa into a couple of punches and the back four into a sweat with some moments of sustained pressure, but they never had their guests on the ropes.Austria in the end played better than their world ranking of 92nd might have suggested, but if the home advantage being Euro 2008 hosts cannot help them to avoid defeat in their opening game, the...

Will Chelsea ever get the right man?
2008-06-08 18:26:00 As the managerial merry-go-round comes to a halt for another week the question over who will take over at one of the richest clubs in the world still remains. With one of Chelsea?s supposed successors having already been snapped up by one of their rivals it might seem to some Blues fans that they are never going to find a new head coach. I know some Chelsea fans were disappointed when Mark Hughes joined Man City earlier this week because for them he has proven himself to be a shrewd manager, not only in the Premier League with Blackburn but on an international front with Wales, where he very nearly achieved qualification for the 2004 European Championship, narrowly losing to Russia in the play-offs. The former Chelsea forward was seen as a very good candidate to take up the post, he was the only manager who you would consider to have not been at a ?big club? yet. So now Chelsea must continue their quest to find the perfect manager, one who can continue their good domestic form ...

Exciting time for Qatar Football
2008-06-08 12:24:00 This is an exciting time for Qatar Football. Not only have Qatar just beaten China 1-0 with a penalty at half time during their away game, the country is also now joint first with Australia after Australia's shock defeat at the hand's of Qatar. The upcoming Saturday game against Australia will prove interesting, although the heat is likely to preclude dramatic play from either of the two sides. Check out the discussion on the I love Qatar forum.More could be coming, according to an article in the Guardian entitled Qatar plans Shock Bid for 2018 Tournament, which suggest that Qatar is likely to apply for the Games. However, Qatar is likely to be cautious this time around after being rejected from the Olympic Games bid despite tying joint third with Chicago on technical points. (Rio de Janeiro, which was behind on points, was accepted in this preliminary round.)The move could see them in direct opposition with the UAE, which has also been discussing bidding for the 2018 world cup.Qa...

Swiss Roll on their Big Night
2008-06-07 21:29:00 Switzerland 0-1 Czech Republic (Sverkos 70') 41,000 Stade de Suisse/Wankdorf Stadion, Berne So the home side is up against it. Actually, it's not too surprising given it is a) Switzerland and b) the tournament's opening game, which is rarely thrilling. Add to that the Czech Republic's quality and you could have had a Swiss banking on his own country to lose. From a neutral's perspective, it's often quite secretly delightful to see the host nation come a cropper in its first outing, its Montgolfier of hubris punctured, the tidal wave of national fervour turned back, but it is a bad thing we should all agree, if the host is eliminated too early. That sense of loss infects the tournament as a whole.I did actually meet one Swiss in Interlaken tonight with Czech flags painted on both cheeks, cheering Karel Bruckner's men. Why? She said it was too boring to go with the flow so she chose to be different... Interlaken's fan fest was tinged with a lot of orange but was mostly red and ...

Start of Euro 2008 - Football Championship we waited so much!
2008-06-07 20:39:00 My dear readers, I congratulate you with the start of so awaited Euro 2008! During this month a lot of us will play Football Manager less than usually because we are going to spend much time sitting near TV-sets :) The opening match was very the same as during the last Euro championships when home team looses the game with 0:1 score. Switzerland - Czech Republic... My opinion is that the game was really even and national team of Switzerland didn't deserve the loss. They could have penalty after Ujfalusi's hand in the box. Or there could be goal if Fonlanten is more lucky when ball had got in the bar without chance for Petr Cech to save it. In the end I think that was the match between two rather average national teams (though Czech has more experience, of course). They didn't do anything that could wonder us like brilliant technique, unpredictable passes, flamboyant actions. Buy I think that one of these teams will get into quaterfinals but not further... PS. Sorry for o...

Football is Won in the Trenches - How do the Broncos Measure Up?
2008-06-05 18:25:00 Today, CBS Sportsline has a couple of articles ranking the 32 NFL franchises’ offensive and defensive lines. This is something I’m interested in more than any other comparison any of these national media sites can do - it’s the exact reason why a talented Denver Broncos team failed to deliver in 2007. The top of each article features a graph showing 5 years of sacks and sacks allowed by every NFL team. From 2002 to 2007, only 4 teams (the Packers, Colts, Patriots, and Chargers) have allowed fewer sacks than the Broncos. The defensive line is another story - the Broncos are just below the middle of the pack when it comes to 5 years of DL-attributed sacks. OFFENSE: Denver Broncos Rank 19 out of 32 Best player: LG Ben Hamilton. Weak link: The right tackle spot. The skinny: The Broncos line, which has been a strong point in recent years, wasn’t so good last season. That’s why Denver picked Ryan Clady in the first round. He will start at left tackle. The ...

Qatar Football: Too hot to play...
2008-06-03 22:57:00 There have been several reports of the Qatar-China match but what most seemed to have missed was just how hot it was. Even the spectators were soaked through with sweat, so it must have been awful for the players, even though they were gulping down fluids at every opportunity. Obviously the Chinese players' special water cooled vests had less effect than they had anticipated, as they seemed the more lackluster of the two teams. There is little chance of playing good football in this weather - and when Qatar play Australia it will be even hotter...Also see: Qatar SoccerQatar Visitor FriendsQatar JobsFind the best deal, compare prices and read what other travellers have to say about QatarTagsfootball

What the 2008 Bulldog Football Season Hinges on
2008-06-02 19:05:00 This past weekend I attended the Under Armour camp with Mdg and Zagfan559 (I have a horrendous sunburn on my forehead to prove it). While watching all of the junior and seniors compete one on one in drills I began to think about the many different avenues the 2008 Bulldog football season might take. I have had a hard time coming up with what I think will happen during the football season if only because of how the 2007 season went. As one of my good friends said "the 2007 season was one of the best coaching jobs Pat Hill has done in his time at Fresno State." I tend to agree with this sentiment due to the amount of injuries the Bulldogs endured this past season and it is injuries that I believe will impact the 2008 more so than any other factor.Anyone who follows the Bulldogs knows the Dogs may be more talented on the field in 2008 than ever before. Tom Brandstater returns as the Senior QB with both experience and talent. The RB situation has only become that much better with ...
