Nonetheless, it was interesting because the Focus seems to be quick, and of course it's completely silent. With a 50/50 weight balance (due to the battery pack in the trunk), it also handles. Jay made the mistake of saying the car was built in Dearborn, which is not entirely true. The final tuning of it was, bit otherwise it's a Ford of Europe Focus (a significantly better Focus than the lame one sold in North America) with a prototype battery pack engineered by Ford of Europe. AT the Frankfirst show last week, Ford introduced nearly the same car, minus the ST suspension, to point the way to the future 2011/2012 production car. The jury is out here at DrivingEnthusiast...

The North American Focus has no enthusiast value at all, although due to the gas crisis it has sold above expectations. The last North American Focus with any enthusiast interest at all was the SVT Focus, and that became obsolete against the competition so quickly that it is all but forgotten these days. The European Focus, however, has always offered at least two enthusiast variants and has recently taken a quantum jump forward with the new RS model. With the new Ford Focus coming to North America in late 2010 (MY 2011), it's a natural question to ask about performance models. The Focus ST is roughly equivalent to a Subaru WRX or Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliant - except it doesn't have all-wheel drive. The Focus RS is somewhere above that - lots of horsepower but still no all wheel drive - and therefore still under the Evo or STI in overall capabilities. The upcoming Focus RS has only officially been shown in the following picture. However, lots of pictures can be found of it being tested at Nurburgring. Only time will tell if we'll get one or both of these in North America... certification and component costs would be very high for small volume, but they would serve to nicely showcase the new Focus. Ford's product chief, Derrick Kuzak, made the announcement during the SAE World Congress in Detroit. According to Kuzak, the next-generation Ford Focus will be a global vehicle and will ride on the C1 platform — the same that underpins the current European Ford Focus. Kuzak also says that about 87 percent of the parts for the next-generation car will come from Ford's global parts bin — a move that will reduce costs and further globalize Ford's engineering efforts. The good news is that because the Focus will now be a global car, we could see the hotter Focus RS and ST for sale here in the States. The downside is that the new car isn't slated to make its debut until 2010 or 2011.
