The Tudors: Transformations and Assassins
2008-04-12 00:30:00 It's the season for history on cable television - John Adams on HBO, the return of The Tudors on Showtime - and it's proving to be a wonderful season, indeed. The Tudors this season is all about transformation.Charles Brandon (well-played by Henry Cavill) was Henry's loyal buddy last year. But Princess Margaret died, Charles has remarried, and is changing his ways. He seems faithful to his new wife. He spends more time at home. And he is taking Queen Catherine's side...What happened? I've "grown up," Brandon says. And this growing is putting him on an ever more dangerous collision course with Henry and his supporters, as the King at last officially proclaims Anne.Thomas More is growing too. He can no longer serve as Chancellor, and is finding keeping quiet about his misgivings about Henry and Anne increasingly difficult. Henry is definitely "no longer Harry".And the Church is changing too, both in England and Rome, though The Tudors takes some literacy license and compr...

Paul Levinson Lectures on Freedom and Media
2007-11-11 23:32:00 Apologies for the third person in the title, but I thought it would make a more informative title than "I"... Either way, you'll find here my lectures, and interviews, about freedom and media. At present, you can see my 60-minute November 5, 2007 avatar interview in Second Life, conducted by Kenny Hubble (Ken Hudson)my 50-minute September 28, 2007 lecture to my Fordham University class on the mainstream media mistreatment of Ron Pauland, coming soon, my June 28, 2005 Keynote Address at Fordham University on "The Flouting of the First Amendment" (in the meantime, here's the transcript) I expect to be adding new and old lectures to this series on a monthly basis, more or less. (You can click on "Guide" at the bottom of the screen, for a complete list of available episodes.)The videos in this series will usually be at least 30 minutes in length, and often an hour or more, in contrast to my YouTube videos, which are usually interview clips of me of just a few minutes. Mike Wallace at 89, at Fordham University
2007-11-07 05:37:00 I love teaching, but every once in a while I have a day that captures the very best that can happen at a fine university. It's related to teaching, as most things are at a university, but goes far beyond that.I've been watching, enjoying, and learning from Mike Wallace on CBS since I was teenager, back in the 1960s. Whether his sage commentary in reporting Presidential election returns, or his take-no-prisoners questions in pursuit of the truth on 60 Minutes, Mike Wallace has always been a one-of-a-kind class act.He talked today at Fordham University. And not only answered but asked perceptive questions of the students - the kinds of questions that may well change some of their lives. Here's how that came to be.In my capacity as Chair of the Department of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University, I helped hire Dr. Beth Knobel. About a year ago, we coaxed her into leaving her position as CBS Bureau Chief in Moscow and joining our Department at Fordham. She arrange...

How Did My Fordham University Students Do On Their Midterm Question about R
2007-10-26 22:43:00 So how did my Intro to Communication and Media Studies class at Fordham University do on their midterm exam - and, in particular, the question about Ron Paul's mistreatment by mainstream news media. You may recall that the open book exam consisted of three questions, with students required to answer two of the three. This was the first question:1. Consider Ron Paul?s Presidential campaign the Source of communication. Using the Shannon-Weaver model, explain all the steps that the campaign must go through, in order to reach its Destination, the American people. Make sure you address each step in the process, as well as what can (and did) go wrong in the process, and possible remedies for addressing this. (Option: If you like to do this analysis for another Presidential candidate, that would be acceptable, but make sure you have specific examples to present.)Here is a summary of relevant results.a. A little more than 100 students took the exam (it's a "mega"-class). Of those, ab...

My Sept 28 2007 Lecture at Fordham University about the Media Misreporting
2007-10-04 03:31:00 This is the lecture I delivered to my "Introduction to Communication and Media Studies" class at Fordham University on September 28, 2007 about the media misreporting of Ron Paul. The lecture, with student questions at the end, was about 50 minutes. It's divided in five parts on the YouTube video, as follows: 1. history of polling ... ABC May 2007 misreporting of Ron Paul ... 2. ABC continues misreporting Ron Paul (early August 2007).... 3. Mark Levin urges disinformation against Ron Paul on ABC radio ... Kucinich gets cropped ... the First Amendment ... 4. Hannity & Colmes misreport Ron Paul on Fox News ... reasons behind all of this ... 5. I answer student questions ...Note that the above is, of course, current only as of September 28, 2007, and contains no mention of ABC affiliate WMUR TV in New Hampshire failing to cover the Ron Paul "Family Day" rally on September 30...listen to Light On Light Through podcast also iTunes Paul Levinson's books
