Miguel has been visiting a small city in Kenya every year since 1997 to help local development-oriented nonprofit organizations design and evaluate their rural programs. In this meaty article the ...

Africa: Who benefits from seed aid?
2008-05-01 13:34:00 A lot is written about emergency aid. One area that I am interested in is the handing out of seeds etc following a drought and the results of this practical type of aid. It is apparent that this is not as simplistic as it might seem. What seeds? Where from? Free or paid for? Who ...

What few argue, however, is the impact aid dollars have had on health care in the third world. Literally millions of lives have ...
Can Foreign Aid Save Africa?, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-03-10 21:22:00 Congress is poised to pass the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) authorizing up to $50 million in unconstitutional foreign aid. The bill passed out of the Foreign Affairs Committee with a bipartisan agreement to nearly double the President's requested amount. It is always distressing to see officials in our government reach across the aisle to disregard Constitutional limitations. Much of this aid will run through government-to-government channels and will be vulnerable to corruption. Some of the aid will be sent to faith-based organizations who, along with accepting government largess, will now be subject to governmental controls and will soon become more dependent on taxpayer funding than private funds. If they accept the aid, they must be careful of the vague language regarding what types of programs they can run. For example, the requirement that 33% of any funding received must go toward abstinence-only programs has been dropped and replaced with a 50%...

Your Tax Pesos At Work
2008-02-12 17:48:00 Hey America, thanks for the money,we got you something too. It’s tax time, and you know what that means. The federal government has been skimming money out of your paycheck all year long and now it’s time for you to fill out the forms and ask them nicely if you can have some of it back. While you’re filling out your tax forms this year, I want you to look at box 2 on your W-2 form. That’s how much money the government took from you last year. Now I’m going to tell you how that money is being spent. We can?t finish our own border fence, properly supply our immigration agents and border patrol with all the equipment and resources they need, or get our house in order. Yet, the Bush administration wants to fork over $1.4 billion to Mexico and Central America?with much of it going into the hands of corrupt law enforcement officials and government bureaucrats who have worked tirelessly to undermine our immigration laws. The funding is tucked into the 20...

America?s Farm Subsidies and the World Economy
2007-12-06 13:00:00 The United States produces a great deal of food each year. Actually, it overproduces food. This is the result of federal farm policies that pay farmers by the amount of crop they produce each year. This results in lower prices for grains, not only in America, but around the world. And the rest of the world isn’t happy about it. So why should I care what the rest of the world thinks? The main reason is national security. It takes a while to get there, but stick with me. The overproduction of any commodity results in the lowering of the price. It is simple supply and demand. In America, the farmer is compensated with subsidies if the market is low. However, farmers in other countries are not. While he was President of the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz called for the end of subsidies because of the negative effects they had on poor nations. He understood what I am going to explain to you: Mr Wolfowitz increased pressure on the industrialised world when he said the tempor...

2007-11-20 15:53:00 Sir Bob Geldof was in Australia yesterday to take on his new role as “Honorary Ambassador for the City of Brisbane” (huh?) and immediately turned the tables on the country by slamming the government for not allocating enough GDP for foreign aid. House Votes to Stop Foreign Aid to Saudi Arabia
2007-06-22 23:02:00 The House of Representatives has voted to cut off foreign aid to Saudi Arabia. I’ll repeat that because it may not sink in right away. Cut off foreign aid. We’ve been giving millions of dollars to Saudi Arabia. The world’s leading exporter of oil. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Friday to prohibit any aid to Saudi Arabia as lawmakers accused the close ally of religious intolerance and bankrolling terrorist organizations. The prohibition, reflecting persistent tensions with the kingdom after the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001, was attached to a foreign aid funding bill for next year that has not yet been debated by the Senate. It also faces a veto threat from the White House because of an unrelated provision. A spokesman for the Saudi embassy in Washington declined to comment on the legislation. In the past three years, Congress has passed bills to stop the relatively small amount of U.S. aid to Saudi Arabia, only...
