Just how scientific is forensic science?
2009-09-16 04:59:00 The answer, according to a congressionally-mandated study by the National Academy of Sciences, is that it's not as scientific as we thought. The full report, titled "Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward", was released in February of 2009. For some reason, it didn't really get much attention until recently. Stephen Markley mentioned a September 9th story on NPR in his post yesterday about the death penalty, and the Pittsburgh Gazette ran an article on September 12. Opponents of the death penalty have been quick to latch on to these reports. Given the overwhelming evidence that at least one person, Todd Willingham, was wrongfully executed based on flawed testimony by an "expert", we all need to pay...

This week: chinosIn pictures: Chino champs Perfect match for the new thinking Enough about dresses - it's time to pay attention to what's happening with trousers. Yves Saint Laurent's s/s 08 chinosThe most neglected story of the summer is that chinos are filtering back, liberated at long last from the doldrums of boring, big-bottomed design. We can be grateful to Stefano Pilati at Yves Saint Laurent for staging the rescue, with support at the more reasonably priced end from the likes of 3.1 Phillip Lim and Acne Jeans; where this trio break new ground, others follow. And sure enough, neutral-coloured, lightweight trousers are represented in every collection and high-street store worth mentioning. All you need is the nous to spin a new attitude out of them.Chinos are most loveable because of their timeless, all-round usefulness in hot weather. They do for weekends and holidays but, if you gauge it ...

Microsoft COFEE (Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor) for law enfor
2008-04-30 16:02:00 Microsoft have always aimed to help computer users do tasks better with their software, while Windows XP and Vista have been loved and hated by some, I am sure investigators and law enforcement will love the new plug-in device called “Microsoft COFEEâ€. It does not contain caffeine, but it does contain 150 commands that will help investigators work faster when gathering digital evidence. The quicker they can extract forensic data from computers, the faster crimes can be solved and maybe it could save more lives. We have pointed out it’s not Coffee, but what COFEE really stands for is “Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractorâ€. This plug-in device (basically a small USB hard drive) can analyze data stored on a computer, analyze Internet activity and decrypt passwords. Last June the Microsoft COFEE device was distributed to a handful of law-enforcement agencies, but today we hear that over 15 countries and 2,000 officers are using this gadget. While we do not know how much...

What Is Forensic Psychology?
2008-03-05 17:06:00 When my students arrived for their first lecture, I would always start by giving them 10 minutes to write down an answer to this question. Before reading on, why not quickly write down what you think forensic psychology is.The reason I did this was because despite the fact that every single undergraduate psychology student (about 180 of them) chose to do the forensic psychology course form a list of optional courses; not one of them came to see me in advance to ask what the course was about. Now bear in mind students chose their optional courses well in advance of the start date, and in order to make an informed choice they were all strongly advised to speak to the lecturer running the courses they were interested in before making a final decision. So why the no show?I suspect, actually I know because I discussed it with the students afterwards, that they didn't feel they had to find out what forensic psychology is, because they already had a preconceived idea.I mentioned that at the ...

Forensic reporting
2007-10-10 11:41:00 I first became aware of Danie Krugel through a review by Anton Harber of an edition of South African current affairs show Carte Blanche. It was an investigation into the whereabouts of missing victims of a paedophile murderer. Harber said: “I am not sure what Carte Blanche was doing in this story, but it is not journalism. They base their report on two dubious characters - a clairvoyant and an ex-policeman [Krugel] with a mysterious super-machine - who led them to a patch of ground where they found a few unidentified bone fragments. This stuff belongs in a superhero comic, not in journalism.“George Claassen nailed it even more firmly.I nearly blogged it, but I didn’t - surely British journalism, however low, could never sink that far into the primordial swamp of superstition. But the great thing about journalism is, it can always surprise you.It wasn’t just them, but here is the Observer: Traces of Madeleine McCann’s body were found on a Portuguese beach weeks after she wa...
