Guillen lacks carefulness, not foresight on ChiSox season
2008-06-04 07:16:00 Ozzie Guillen's mouth is creating problems again after an unfiltered rant ... or is it? His ChiSox are in first and he's just being Ozzie, who is rarely careful with his words and that's why we love him, Danny Knobler says.

Evolution Time: Oversight to Insight to Foresight
2008-05-01 21:43:00 This is the most important aspect of board governance. The oversight function is the absolute minimum that investors and owners have a right to expect from boards. Some boards are too focused on simply providing the minimum. Board members should, individually and collectively, have experience of business and community life that will enable them to add ...

Foresight Linux and Conary Part I
2008-04-23 16:33:00 People flat out do not understand anything about Conary. What I hear the most:Why another package manger? Isn't there already too many of these out there? Why use Conary when I can apt-get? Apt-get is soooo much better. Dpkg gives you sooooo much more than anything could possibly give you. Conary is still beta quality...rpm and deb are much more developed mature. If the person(s) asking the questions above actually understood what Conary is and CAN do...they would see this is a very limited view of Conary. Not only is conary a package management system vis-a-vis a system that manages EVERY single package of software on your system...it is also a powerful version control system for software packages and packaging. It's an enabling mechanism for packaging software quickly and easily.I'd like to go over some of the things I think are great about Conary...clear up some of the "why is this needed" speak by showing how Conary actually gets things right and the common p...

Shuttle?s KPC Ready For Prime Time, Starts At $299 For A Ready-made Unit
2008-03-16 22:25:00 It sounds like Shuttle was being a little optimistic in January when it promised a $99 barebones PC and a $199 version with a full complement of internals and a Linux OS. That said, the KPC is still a decent deal, with the K45 barebones kit including quite a bit to be getting on with ...

Installing and Using RealPlayer on Foresight Linux
2008-02-26 15:40:00 Last night, I decided to install RealPlayer onto my fresh Foresight Linux 1.4.X install. I've replaced my main workstation with Foresight due to convenience (I use it at work) and I use RealPlayer from time to time for videos and music. No package exists for RealPlayer in the repositories, so head over to Real.com and download the .bin file. After the .bin file has been downloaded, use the following commands to install: chmod 755 RealPlayer10GOLD.bin && sudo ./RealPlayer10Gold.binIn the terminal, it will ask you what directory you'd like to install RealPlayer into. I chose /opt/RealPlayer (you'll have to type it in) because I'd rather have the files installed there than in my home directory, which is where I downloaded the file to. After this, you'll have a shiny, new shortcut inside Applications >> Sound and Video >> RealPlayer. Click on this to launch the program and follow the wizard. The wizard will setup the Mozilla (firefox) plugins for you but th...
Foresight, hindsight, Debian, BSD, Linux books ? and the 5 a.m. problem
2008-02-21 02:06:00 I've taken a few days off from OpenBSD, and in the interim I ran the NetBSD live CD for the first time on the Gateway Solo 1450 (the $0 Laptop). Again, it looks great, but I'm so far from figuring out how to manage the CPU fan in any of the BSDs that I'm not optimistic about running any of them on this laptop. I wish it were different, but until the heavens open and the path forward is made much more clear, I'll stick to desktops (and my old 1999-era Compaq Armada pre-ACPI laptop) for BSD. During that time, I booted into Debian Lenny on the Gateway and installed 141 updates.

Lack of foresight
2008-02-09 06:10:00 I wasn't sure about whether I should talk about this or not, because after all, it affected people we know (or at least my wife and her mom know). But the story has made it to the local media now, so I better discuss this issue, especially considering that some people who read my blog are thinking about (or in the process of) coming to Canada. This family, that Gaby knows through the KW Spanish Cultural Society (to which she belongs), received the visit of their sister who came from Chile. This lovely lady (Gaby and her mom told me she was very funny) arrived in Kitchener last August, but didn't purchase any travel insurance, something that many people coming from our region do, regrettably. Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke last week and had to be hospitalized; even worse, she passed away yesterday. Now her family has to deal with a huge bill from the local hospital, because the treatment she received averaged $2,500 per day. We're talking about no less than $20...
Installing Openbox on Foresight Linux
2008-02-08 17:47:00 My friend Og Maciel originally introduced me to Openbox a while back and I’ve been using it ever since. I love the lightweight feel, the ability to customize and the center around having NO icons on my desktop. I don’t feel cluttered when I work! I published a version of this tutorial/how-to on my previous blog that I’ve retired. It was originally for Openbox 3.4.2 but I’ve now updated it for Openbox 3.4.6.1. This tutorial is tailored for Foresight Linux 1.4.X but the guide may very well serve other distros as well. Continue reading "Installing Openbox on Foresight Linux"

Foresight KDE Alpha3
2008-01-23 17:58:00 NOTE: For clarification purposes...this is not an official release. It is only accessible to developers. It is called Foresight KDE Alpha3 because it is based on the underlying architecture in Foresight Gnome alpha3 release. For those of you with developer status or above on the Foresight Linux project, there is a KDE build available for testing (along with XFCE if you really have ambitions). Login to rBuilder Online, Click on the Foresight Linux Project, go to Manage Builds and search for Foresight Linux KDE Alpha3 and click it (DVD only). I downloaded and tested this build release to see how things are going.Foresight KDE inherits all the goodness from the Foresight Linux project. This means the install is tar based and completes in less than 7 minutes. It also means Syslinux, Compiz Fusion, and more from the Release Notes. If you are interested in helping us develop further, please visit us in freenode #foresight-kde.FindingsI found 3 major issues during testing. First, u...

Alltray in Foresight
2007-11-28 17:45:00 I’ve recently packaged up Alltray, a handy tool for keeping items minimized to the gnome task bar, in Foresight Linux. For those of you who new to my blog...I’ve recently switched jobs to from the state of Virginia (project management) to work for rPath, Inc. rPath is responsible for some innovative software development tools centered around the Conary package manager and also creates a minimalistic linux distribution that serves as source for Foresight Linux. I’ve recently become active in helping develop the KDE Version of Foresight Linux. I’m by no means a programmer. I’ve been hired on as a documentation specialist. Yet, Conary is simplistic enough that I can roll my own packages. I’m quite impressed by it’s simplicity and power. If you’d like to help out or are curious about KDE Foresight or the Conary package manager, visit us on freenode #foresight-kdeFor those of you wanting alltray goodness...update via Packagekit by...

The Jellybean Principle - Overestimation? The Habit of Disappointment
2007-10-18 23:45:00 miWisdom today… The vast majority of people have a natural tendency to overestimate their time, work, energy, decisions and actions. This is known as the Jellybean principle, which is the act of being incapable of estimating correctly how many colored Jellybeans are in the jar. Back in high school there was always someone organizing a Jellybean counting competition of some ...

Foresight
2007-10-04 09:57:00 I think what we sorely lack as a country is foresight. We are too preoccupied with the here and the now that we would rather gamble on things that would benefit us in the short term instead of postponing satisfaction for an ever more fruitful reward in the future. If countries were given a version of the marshmallow test, we would be proudly waving the banner of the flunkies. We have politicians skimming off the top of all projects thrown their way. What Miriam Santiago mentioned during the NBN hearing about the standard kickback rate of 10% was an open secret. Still I was aghast to hear her say it out loud with almost the entire country listening. 10%. Imagine that. That?s 10% of the witholding taxes we pay every month. That?s 3% of our gross monthly salary. That?s 5 hours of work every month ending up in the pocket of some politicians. And that is only the tip of the iceberg, add to that the unliquidated advances, the discretionary intelligence funds, the junket trips etc.. e...
Are You Making the Right Decisions?
2007-09-26 14:57:00 miWisdom today… It is not usually the decisions or actions that people regret taking but rather the results of their actions and how these outcomes have impacted the people, events and circumstances of their lives. Adaptation is the Key to Success
2007-09-25 12:19:00 miWisdom today… One must be prepared to do the unexpected at any moment in time in order to get ahead and stay ahead in this world. Practical Rap: Drafting IT Contracts With Foresight
2007-09-24 11:00:00 Lessons lie buried in IT history for improving IT contracts, especially for software contracts The key for discovering the lessons is to look for patterns of change. We argue a three stage pattern emerges from IT history. The pattern repeats over and over in IT history over the last six decades. It's a pattern which is useful for developing contract strategy by lawyers, their clients and IT companies.
The Technology Foresight Deficit, Revisited
2007-09-15 23:49:00 The Webquarters – As I’ve written earlier, I have been working on understanding the factors that drive the emergence of emerging technologies, and trying to create a methodology for gauging the potential of an emerging technology. Such a methodology should go a long way towards conquering humankind’s technology foresight deficit. ... read more

The Foresight Project and Step it Up on April 14th
2007-04-05 02:10:00 The Foresight Project holds an annual contest for high school kids to write or make a video of their imagined solutions to our energy and climate issues. The contest is called Imagining Tomorrow: Alternate Energy Futures Mary Essary, the founder and visionary of this nationwide contest believes that writing and the creation of video can be powerful tools to help shape students minds, and that science-fiction can be a great way to get them thinking about many of the ways in which we can ensure our future on this planet. The contest is a way to get students to look around in their own backyards and see the realities of the issues we face, while encouraging them to unleash their creativity and envision how we might solve them. Step it Up 2007 This April 14th, tens of thousands of Americans will gather all across the country at meaningful, iconic places to call for action on climate change.
American Foresight - horrifyingly admirable
2007-02-21 19:26:01 All this talk about 9/11 conspiracy theories has set me thinking down a rather interesting and thought provoking route. Contrary to my post about the BBC 2 programme on 9/11, I have always tried to step back from subscribing to conspiracy theories and, rather than believe either the official story or the conspiracy theory, I like to believe neither and treat each as equally credible/incredible.But let us now suppose that a group of top-ranking individuals in the American government (or CIA, or FBI, or whatever you choose to believe) did indeed concoct a plan which, through the instillation of fear in their people using false flag terrorism, would provoke such an atmosphere in which they could justifiably demand greater powers. Let us assume that they used this atmosphere as a pretext for the invasion of Iraq.Let us also assume (which may or may not be the case) that they plan to further use this atmosphere to invade other middle-eastern countries, notably Iran and other countries on... |
