?Fifty Million Farmers? by Richard Heinberg
2008-05-08 17:55:00
“There was a time not so long ago when famine was an expected, if not accepted, part of life. Until the 19th century - whether in China, France, India or Britain - food came almost entirely from local sources and harvests were variable. “In good years, there was plenty - nough for seasonal feasts and for ...

Apple farmers use pigs instead of pesticides
2008-04-13 08:48:00
Jim Koan has a 120-acre apple farm in Flushing, MI. Plagued by the Plum Curculio Beetle that lays its eggs in apples and makes the fruit drop too early from trees, Koan could have used frequent sprays of pesticides for years to get rid of the beetles, or he could use pigs. He tried chickens and ...
Forestry and Global Warming - How Can Our Forests Effect Climate Change
2008-04-03 16:12:00
The amount of land dedicated to forests, particularly old growth forests, could significantly reduce global warming. Forests are an important use of land in most countries, and in modern times they take on a new, environmental significance. Plant life scrubs carbon dioxide from the air. Carbon dioxide is a main cause of global warming and can be eliminated just by being in the vicinity of certain plants.Trees are the best carbon dioxide scrubbers found in nature. Old growth trees are especially good at removing carbon dioxide from the air and storing it within their cells. For this reason, old growth trees need to be preserved. The lumber trade argues that the old growth trees can be easily replaced by new trees, but this is simply not the case. New trees do not possess the abilities that old trees have of preventing global warming by trapping carbon dioxide. Some proponents of cutting suggest that certain new trees are capable of trapping more greenhouse gases than the old trees. T...

Wordless Wednesday #29: Buddhism and Forestry
2008-02-19 09:05:00
Check out other Wordless Wednesday photos.n.b.: Please excuse me, I know it is supposed to be wordless but I couldn't help but explain the link between Buddhism, Cambodia's religion, and the forests. A lot of things has been said about the forests of Cambodia and one thing is for sure - the forests are rapidly disappearing with the country's opening to a market-oriented economy. Here's a section of what I wrote years ago:Forest cover has decreased from over 70% in 1970 to around 35% today (depending on which source you are using), and many globally important mammals such as kouprey, tigers, and elephants are on the path to extinction. The forests, upon which local people depended for firewood, medicines, building materials, and religious or spiritual value, have been ruthlessly destroyed by logging companies. Given the traditional prestige of Buddhist monks among the population and the natural ecological orientation of Buddhism as a belief system and way of life, monks are a pri...

Bush’s Top Forestry Official Facing Contempt Charges - Jail
2007-08-23 17:57:00
by- Suzie-Q @ 8:58 AM MST Via The Raw Story: As if it wasn’t bad enough for the Bush Administration already, contempt charges are flying in Montana. The Administration’s top forestry official has been ordered to explain why the US Forest Service failed to analyze the environmental impact of dropping a fish-killing flame retardant on wildfires — or face contempt of court. Agriculture Undersecretary Mark Rey would then face jail unless the Forest Service assented to a court order enjoining the environmental review. “Noting that Rey had blocked implementation of an earlier review, U.S. District Judge Donald W. Malloy ordered Rey to appear in his court Oct. 15 unless the Forest Service completes the analysis before that time,” Associated Press reporter Jeff Barnard wrote. Forest Service spokesman Joe Walsh told AP the agency was working on the analysis, but couldn’t say if the Secretary would meet the deadline; Rey did not respond to requests for comment. Natural Regeneration in Eucalyptus (5): surviving forestry fires.

We have previously seen images of natural regeneration in E. delegatensis, E. obliqua, E. globulus, E. nitens, E. blakelyi, E. nicholii and E. gunnii in which regrowth was present from lignotuber or axillary buds after the removal af the aerial part of the trees. Most forestry workers in Chile have basic salaries of under US$100 a month. Around 2,000 workers from the wood/pulp-processing plant blocked traffic on the main road on Thursday night. The police attacked using tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets in an attempt to intimidate and disperse the striking workers.
