Wildfires May Improve Forests' Ability to Sequester Carbon
2008-08-01 16:06:00
From Scientific American: Wildfires wreaked havoc across southern California last year, resulting in billions of dollars in irreparable damage. Not surprisingly, land managers and agencies this season have mobilized fire crews and equipment to stop the flames before they spread. In
IE partners with American Forests for green Carbon Grove campaign
2008-06-10 01:02:00
Last month, Window's Internet Explorer launched Carbon Grove, a green campaign designed to mobilize internet users to pursue reductions in their personal carbon footprints. Today, we are excited to announce that the campaign is expanding to France, and in partnership with American Forest we are taking steps to make the virtual forest a reality through the planting of up to 250,000 real trees in deforested regions across the globe. Carbon Grove is a carbon footprint reduction reminder service that empowers users to reduce their impact on the environment, and through the use of Windows Internet Explorer 7 with Dynamic Security Protection, users can also help improve the internet environment. Internet Explorer 7 is architected with security features that help defend against malicious software (also known as malware) and better protect against the theft of personal data by fraudulent websites. By participating in Carbon Grove's campaign, internet users nurture a virtual tree seedling...

An Australian company has secured an international corporate deal, that will save 750,000 hectares of rainforest in Indonesia. The company, Carbon Conservation, has persuaded Wall St banker Merrill Lynch to sink $AUD9 million into local businesses in Aceh which could be worth $AUD400 million in carbon credits for the bank.Carbon Conservation CEO, Dorje Sun, says the forest will be guarded by 1000 heavily armed former Free Aceh rebels. He says 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide will now stay locked in the rainforest.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
"Heart of Borneo" countries agree to five points to conserve forests
2008-04-05 03:10:00
Three countries that took part in the second "Heart of Borneo" (HoB) meeting -- Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam -- have agreed to implement five things to protect forest areas, conservation and production forests for the sake of future generations, a senior Agriculture Ministry official said.Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, the ministry`s director of forest areas and nature conservation (PHKA), Nur Hidayat, said the three countries had committed themselves to implementing five points agreed on during the four-day Heart of Borneo meeting in Pontianak from April 1 to 4.The five points had to do with space layout, utilization of protected and conserved forests in accordance with their types or qualifications, processing of forest products based on conservation principles as not all forests are included in the HoB, conducting activities designed to make use of the existing potentials by avoiding tree-cutting, making efforts to save and maintain forests in line wi...
Forestry and Global Warming - How Can Our Forests Effect Climate Change
2008-04-03 16:12:00
The amount of land dedicated to forests, particularly old growth forests, could significantly reduce global warming. Forests are an important use of land in most countries, and in modern times they take on a new, environmental significance. Plant life scrubs carbon dioxide from the air. Carbon dioxide is a main cause of global warming and can be eliminated just by being in the vicinity of certain plants.Trees are the best carbon dioxide scrubbers found in nature. Old growth trees are especially good at removing carbon dioxide from the air and storing it within their cells. For this reason, old growth trees need to be preserved. The lumber trade argues that the old growth trees can be easily replaced by new trees, but this is simply not the case. New trees do not possess the abilities that old trees have of preventing global warming by trapping carbon dioxide. Some proponents of cutting suggest that certain new trees are capable of trapping more greenhouse gases than the old trees. T...
Nature Crisis Update: Nigeria's forests to disappear by 2020

Nigeria will lose all of its remaining forests in the next 12 years if the rate of deforestation remains unchecked, an environmental expert warned Thursday."Considering the rate at which trees are chopped down without any regeneration efforts all of Nigeria's forests will disappear by 2020," Kabiru Yammama said.A still from the Documentary: Trees Of PlentyYammama, who heads up the National Forest Conservation Council (NFCCN), a body that acts as a consultant to the Nigerian government, said all forests in northern Nigeria have been depleted and deforestation is moving southwards."The north has lost virtually all its forests. Turning just one Sumatran province's forests and peat swamps into pulpwood and palm oil plantations is generating more annual greenhouse gas emissions than the Netherlands and rapidly driving the province's elephants into extinction, a new study by WWF and partners has found. The study found that in central Sumatra's Riau Province nearly 10.5 million acres of tropical forests and peat swamp have been cleared in the last 25 years. Forest loss and degradation and peat decomposition and fires are behind average annual carbon emissions equivalent to 122 percent of the Netherlands total annual emissions, 58 percent of Australia's annual emissions, 39 percent of annual UK emissions and 26 percent of annual German emissions.Riau was chosen for the study because it is home to vast peatlands estimated to hold Southeast Asia?s largest store of carbon, and contains some of the most critical habitat for Sumatran elephants and tigers. It also has Indonesia's highest deforestation rate, subst...
President defends land use fees to save forests
2008-02-23 11:08:00
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono defended Friday a new regulation to impose fees on non-forestry firms to rehabilitate the country's deteriorating forests. The regulation would raise extra money to finance reforestation programs, he said."The aim is good, to save our forests," the President told reporters after a limited Cabinet meeting at the Forestry Ministry. In attendance were Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Coordinating Minister for Economics Boediono, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Forestry Minister Malam Sambat Kaban and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani.Yudhoyono said many people, however, misread the regulation and accused the government of renting out the protected forests to investors."The idea is not a forest-renting business. This is not to rent protected forests to mining companies," he said. The President said the forest use fees of between Rp 1.2 million and Rp 3 million per hectare per year, as set in the regulation, could still be debated.Envir...
No new open-pit mining in forests: Govt
2008-02-22 10:19:00
The government said Thursday it would not license new mining companies to operate open-pit mining systems in protected forests."There will be no more open-pit mining permits in protected forests other than the 13 already-licensed firms," Yetti Rusli of the Forestry Ministry said. She made the statement in response to growing fears from environmental activists a new regulation requiring forest exploitation fees would encourage more mining firms to dig up forests, including protected ones."The collection of fees is not intended for renting forest lands. It is only a little part of the responsibilities that the operating mining firm must fulfill."They still have to pay royalties to the government," Yetti said. She said the non-tax revenues generated from the new regulation would be used to support the government's reforestation program. The regulation, which took effect Feb. 8, say non-forestry firms operating in forests must pay fees of between Rp 1.2 and Rp 3 million per hectare per ye...

Fish also help in seed dispersal in forests
2008-02-06 10:16:00
A new research has revealed that fish have a remarkable role in distributing the seeds of tropical plants.   The research was carried out in Brazil's Pantanal, the largest freshwater wetlands in the world, by a team from the São Paulo State University.   According to a report in Nature News, in the usual methods of animal seed dispersal, primates, rodents and birds either eat fruit and ingest seeds contained inside or get seeds from the plant stuck to their bodies. Later, the seeds are either defecated intact, or fall off.   But in recent years, ecologists have found seeds in the digestive tracts of more than a hundred fish species as well.   In the Pantanal, plants including palms and legumes tend to release their fruits during a time of year when massive flooding is common, and waters encroach over thousands of square kilometres.   The fruits fall from the trees into water and the pacu, one of the most common fish in the Pantanal, migrate deep i...

World fears for Indonesia's forests
2008-01-17 01:02:00
Deforestation on an industrial scale is taking place - with devastating side-effect.An occasional tree in this corner of South Sumatra province has escaped the plunder. Otherwise all that is visible for kilometre after kilometre are stumps and rough grassland. Locals say the illegal logging is on an industrial scale, with dozens of truckloads of wood being extracted every day.Such scenes are typical across Indonesia, where deforestation is taking place at an estimated rate of five football pitches a minute - faster than anywhere else in the world. About 80 per cent is being done illegally, according to the United Nations. Conservation International, which conducts satellite research, says that 4 per cent of Indonesia's conservation land is being encroach upon every year. One of the side-effects of this is that Indonesia has become the world's third largest emitter of greenhouse gases. This is mainly because vast tracts of carbon-rich peatlands are being illegally cleared for oil pa...

Paper giant illegally clearing Indonesian forests
2008-01-09 00:13:00
Rare elephants, tigers and orangutans are under threat from illegal land clearing on Indonesia's Sumatra island by one of Asia's biggest pulp and paper companies, environmentalists said Tuesday.Regional giant Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) and affiliates are clearing land and building an access road outside their legal concessions in the Bukit Tigapuluh area of Sumatra's Jambi province, a coalition of five environmental groups said in a press release accompanying a new joint report."From our surveys and other NGO surveys we know this is a very critical habitat for tigers, elephants and recently introduced orangutans," Desmarita Murni, a campaigner with WWF, one of the groups, told AFP.Bukit Tigapuluh is one of only two viable habitats for Sumatran elephants, along with Tesso Nilo forest in neighbouring Riau province, which is also under threat, Murni said.Satellite images in November 2007 showed 20,000 hectares (49,200 acres) had already been illegally cleared by APP and related compa...

Forests is not only about wood, but also carbon
2007-12-08 01:51:00
A forest may be defined as a cluster of trees, big and small, in an area where people can earn a living and is also often a source of firewood. In 1964, a forest was also interpreted as identical to logs processed into wood or pulp and sold. The fact is that a forest is no longer merely linked to timber, tigers, elephants, mouse deer, snakes, birds, bacteria and other fauna. In a broader sense, a forest is normally associated with people as part of the forest, which provide a habitat for animals and a place to life for people, and is a source of medical herbs to cure various illnesses and stabilizes the climate. In the era of climate change and currently taken up in an international conference in Bali, forests are also discussed with regard to carbon, and that a forested area will absorb CO2 and create monetary compensation. Consequently, forests will be a source of money if they are well cared for. The proposal of reduction and emission from deforestation and forest...

In Indonesia's shrinking forests, a glimmer of hope
2007-12-06 05:48:00
Here on the island of Sumatra, about 1,200 miles from the global climate talks under way on Bali, are some of the world's fastest-disappearin g forests. From here, to anybody looking out over a vast wasteland of charred stumps and dried-out peat, the fight to save Indonesia's forests can seem nearly impossible. "What can we possibly do to stop this? I feel lost, I feel abandoned," said Pak Helman, 28, a villager here in Riau Province, surveying the scene from his leaking wooden longboat. In recent years, dozens of pulp and paper companies have descended on Riau, which is roughly the size of Switzerland, snatching up generous government concessions to log and establish palm oil plantations. And villagers are in a state of panic. Only five years ago, Helman says, he earned nearly $100 a week catching shrimp. Now, with logging activity having poisoned the rivers snaking through the heart of Riau, he says he is lucky to find enough to earn $5 a month.Responding to global demand for pal...
Japan to propose satellite monitoring of rain forests at Bali conference
2007-12-03 01:00:00
The Japanese government is planning to propose at an upcoming international conference a system to monitor rain forest destruction on a major scale by employing Japan's satellite technology as part of efforts to fight global warming, government sources said Sunday. Destruction of rain forests is expected to be a major topic on the agenda of the two-week climate change meeting of the United Nations set to start Monday on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.Climate experts are considering a mechanism to offer financial incentives to developing countries that have succeeded in curbing forest destruction, but monitoring forests to estimate efforts against deforestation on a major scale has been deemed difficult. Japan is planning to propose the use of its advanced land-observing satellite Daichi, which can monitor forest conditions in detail even during the night or when it is cloudy, by using sensors, the sources said.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Tell Sears to Stop Cutting Canadian Forests for Catalogues (Do Search Marke
2007-11-23 00:00:00
I have been receiving newsletters lately from ForestEthics, a non-profit organization that focuses on preserving endangered forest in Canada. In their last few emails, they were fiercefully attacking Sears Canada for their environmental policy with regards to the printing of their well known and heavy catalogues. Since 1880, Sears has been famous for their catalogues, but now it is 2007 and Sears must face this new era of climate change and recognize their role in it. They produce around 425 million catalogues every year - and the paper is coming from Canada?s Boreal Forest. Change can happen. A few months ago month, Forest Ethics got a new commitment from Victoria?s Secret for adopting a more sensitive environmental policy with the printing of their catalogues. Over Populated Deer with Too Many Deer Might change Forests Plants, more Di
2007-11-21 10:22:00
I am in a state we are over populated by deer with too many. Is so many deer in the forest that it is actually killing off plants like wild American ginseng, along with other plant species. I was talking to a guy today telling me the reason the forest are having a hard time growing again is because the deer eat all the baby trees so they never get a chance to grow. I wonder what will happen to all the forest in the future with trees being cut down with not being able to grow again. Will the forest disappear entirely or just change into something different it is not known yet. I like deer they are part of our environment. Too many is not healthy for the deer or the environment. Some say what has made the herds increase is mild winters, lack of natural predators like the wolf, along with other factors. If the herd of deer increases, even more I wonder what is going to happen. What I fear is the increased amount of disease in the deer herds is going to happen even more often. That coul...
OPEC SUMMIT Indonesia proposes OPEC oil fund for forests
2007-11-18 13:34:00
Indonesia proposed on Sunday that OPEC oil exporting nations contribute 0.50 usd from every barrel of oil sold in to a special environmental fund to protect forests. Addressing fellow leaders from OPEC at the cartel's third-ever summit in Riyadh, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla pushed a development and environmental agenda expressing "mixed feelings" about the price of oil, which is fetching almost 100 usd a barrel. The Asian nation, which will host a crucial climate change meeting next month, noted that many OPEC countries had environmentally valuable woodland, suggesting a donation could be made to the proposed "Oil for Forests" fund. "If these countries can set aside a certain amount of the price per barrel of oil... and devote the fund to manage forests in a sustainable way, we will certainly have a better environment," he said. An official in the Indonesia delegation said the idea was that OPEC countries would make the 0.50 usd contribution from the sale of their oil...

Why Do So Many Species Live In Tropical Forests And Coral Reefs?
2007-11-05 07:40:00
The latest development in a major debate over a controversial hypothesis of biodiversity and species abundance is the subject of a paper to be published in the 1 November 2007 issue of the journal Nature। The authors report good agreement between the species richness of two of the world's most vulnerable ecosystems -- tropical forests and coral reefs -- and a simple mathematical model building on the so-called "neutral theory of biodiversity." "We're helping to refine and improve this theory because it might have important implications for the effort to protect terrestrial biodiversity from climate change and urban development," says Jayanth Banavar of the Department of Physics at Penn State, a member of the research team. The Nature paper is based on a counterintuitive assumption of neutral theory: that one can largely ignore interactions between species in modeling patterns of species abundance. The authors are physicists Igor Volkov and Jayanth Banavar of Penn State University...
Forests Of Endangered Tropical Kelp Discovered
2007-11-05 07:13:00
A research team led by San Jose State University and the University of California, Santa Barbara has discovered forests of a species of kelp previously thought endangered or extinct in deep waters near the Galapagos Islands।The discovery has important implications for biodiversity and the resilience of tropical marine systems to climate change."The ecosystems that form in these cold, deep pockets beneath warm tropical waters look more like their cousins in California than the tropical reefs just 200 feet above," said co-author Brian Kinlan, a researcher with UC Santa Barbara's Marine Science Institute. "It is very similar to what we see when we climb a high mountain. For example, high alpine country in California looks more like Alaska."Kinlan and Michael Graham, associate professor at SJSU, began by developing a mathematical model designed to predict likely habitat for the kelp, Eisenia galapagensis, based on information from satellites and oceanographic instruments on condition...
