Tackling Formaldehyde and Alternatives
2008-04-13 06:12:00
The March/April 2008 Issue of Building Products has a good summary for clarifying the use of formaldehyde in building products. There is no web link, unfortunately, so I will copy the article here. Most structural engineered wood is glued together with binders that contain phenol formaldehyde, a product with minimal off gassing. The binders used for some non-structural, interior grade products, like particleboard, MDF, and hardwood plywood, however, can contain urea formaldehyde, a volatile compound that is classified as a carcinogen. Urea formaldehyde is also linked to respiratory problems, eye and nose irritation, and allergic reactions. The telltale sign of its presence: the sweet smell that most kitchen and bathroom cabinets emit. New regulations in California will restrict urea formaldehyde emissions, but do not deal with phenol formaldehyde. In response, manufacturers are developing formaldehyde-free binders, using products like polyurethane and even soy. Last summer, the Cal...

Formaldehyde in clothes
2007-08-28 23:54:00
I just wanted to quickly share this article, I was looking at it last night, almost every clothing item of Mayas that I have checked are from China...Heres a snippet:New Zealand's Target program tested common items of clothing made in China but New Zealand, like Australia, has no safe levels for formaldehyde, a known cancer cause. At just 20 parts per million, the chemical can induce rashes, headaches, dizziness, joint pain, fatigue, asthma and in the extreme case - cancer.Remember 20 parts per million is considered high, but the test results from New Zealand were incredible.Women's corduroys: 290 parts per million.A spiderman T-shirt: 1,400 parts per million.Pyjamas: 3,400.Kids pants: 16,000 parts per million.White stain resistant pants: 18,000 parts per million. That's nearly 900 times a reasonable safe level.Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister, Peter McGauran, ordered authorities to find out what's going on."(It's) totally unacceptable. Australian authorities have bee...

Formaldehyde ? Another Cancer Concern Related to Smoking
2007-01-12 00:45:31
Two more alarming facts to consider if you are a smoker, as if you didn?t already have a myriad of reasons to kick the habit: firstly- there is formaldehyde present in cigarette smoke and secondly ? formaldehyde causes cancer in humans. This is another way that this nasty habit can not only harm to you or kill you, but do harm to or kill your loved ones. In conditions of limited exposure, the effects of formaldehyde don?t seem overly frightening you may experience any or all of the following; burning and watering of the eyes, irritation in the throat and nasal passages, coughing and nausea. In levels of high exposure over prolonged periods of time, the effects of formaldehyde exposure become much more ominous, potentially leading to nasal and or bronchial cancer even leukemia. Studies have been conducted regarding the effects of exposure to formaldehyde for almost thirty years, in 1980 there were findings that prolonged exposure lead to nasal cancer in laboratory rats, later studie...
