2008-01-11 00:00:00 Fourth of July was awesome. I rode out to Laughlin, NV to watch the fireworks display on the river as well as have a little bit of fun gambling. I broke even... Well, I came back with exactly $1 more than I left with, so not completely even. The ride out there was nice, it was pretty humid and there was a lot of bridge construction on the I-40, but otherwise a nice trip. As far as I know there isn't much going on in the Valley. The same tired fireworks displays with obscenely large crowds of drunk people. - Richard

They cancelled the fireworks down at Donaldson Park for the second straight year (because they're doing this huge, forever-long construction project on Route 18), and we all agreed that doing nothing was better than trucking out to Edison or making the hell trip to Red Bank again, which is packed with like a million people and you have to fight it out with the worst Jersey has to offer to find a thin sliver of grass to watch the fireworks from (though the Garucci Brothers are in charge down there, and I have to admit, it was worth the price of admission (free)). So we ended up bbq'ing at the homestead, then my Dad and brother fell asleep at like 8:30 and my Mom and I ended up watching The Bourne Identity for the fiftieth time on TNT. Like I said, sucked. Then the guy who won the Nobel Prize in economics for developing the idea was on The Daily Show. This seems a way out for a lot of very poor people if the money can indeed get to them. It's like peer-to-peer loaning. Lots of people pool small amounts to loan to the very poor to develop their neighborhoods. There was a story on this trend on ABC news about how even Americans can give to ordinary Iraqis to help rebuild. Man, is there a debt we need to repay. Because it's Iraq, the loans are anonymous, so they can't be tied to Americans and the lendee could face reprisals.
