BMW?s hydrogen V12 engine: only a fraction of SULEV emissions levels
2008-03-28 23:02:00 There are many hurdles standing in the way of hydrogen becoming widespread as an energy carrier for our vehicles, either by the direct burning of it in internal combustion engines or in fuel cells. Very few hydrogen refueling centers exist today, and the gas is difficult to capture, transport and store. One thing is certain regarding hydrogen, though: it can offer extremely low emissions, as it does in BMW's hydrogen-burning V12 engine.BMW's Hydrogen 7 had to be tested at Argonne National Laboratory's Center for Transportation Research because the emissions are so minute that most test-beds would not be able to detect them at all. "The BMW Hydrogen 7's emissions were only a fraction of SULEV level, making it one of the lowest emitting combustion engine vehicles that have been manufactured," said Thomas Wallner, a mechanical engineer at Argonne. In fact, Wallner adds, "the car's engine actively cleans the air. Argonne's testing shows that the Hydrogen 7's 12-cylinder engine ac...

2008-03-19 03:38:00 (parents) having children later in life.Rutgers to Create Autism DNA Repository to Study Sporadic Germ-Line Mutations By a GenomeWeb staff reporter NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) — Rutgers University’s Cell and DNA Repository will use a $7.8 million grant from a private foundation to establish a new collection of DNA samples to help autism researchers study sporadic germ-line mutations linked to the disease, Rutgers said today. The Simons Foundation hired RUCDR through its Autism Research Initiative to establish the Simons Simplex Collection, which will house samples from 2,000 families who have a single autistic child. The 2-year program will obtain blood samples from 8,000 participating family members from 11 different centers in the US and in Canada and send them to Rutgers where they will be processed into DNA and cell lines and stored. The collection “will constitute the core resource for a new and different line of research into the genetics of autism,†said Jay Tischfie...

Pamela Anderson Marries Guy Who Makes a Fraction of Her Income, Divorces Hi
2008-01-10 18:47:00 From TMZ.com’s Pam to Rick — I’m Pregnant, Get Lost! (1/9/08): “TMZ has learned the divorce between Pam Anderson and Rick Salomon is back on and Pam is pregnant! “You’ll recall Anderson filed for divorce last month, but called it off just days later. But sources tell TMZ she is now moving forward with the divorce, even though we know she’s pregnant with his baby. “Salomon has told friends he believes she is ‘acting crazy’ because of the pregnancy and hopes she will settle back into the marriage. Interestingly, in her divorce petition, Anderson asked for spousal support but not child support. “The couple were married in Las Vegas on October 6.” Is that a misprint? Let me summarize: 1) Pamela Anderson makes vastly more money than Rick Solomon. 2) Pamela Anderson marries him and divorces him three months later. 3) Pamela Anderson demands alimony. And she deserves alimony because…..huh? To learn more about al...
Photoshop Tutorial: Diffraction Spikes #1
2008-01-04 15:54:00 Lately, I've been fooling around with my Adobe Photoshop, and decided to give a whirl at creating artificial diffraction spikes on wide-angle astrophotography. My final photograph will be submitted after this article because it is still in need of some processing, though I will include some great examples such as the preceding photo of the Pleiades, which has very visible diffraction spikes. It should be noted that diffraction spikes actually detract from the scientific worth of a photograph, as certain features of stars may be obscured by their inclusion. They are strictly there to "pretty up" a photograph, and provide no calculable scientific value.I have created a custom brush preset using instructions I found on IceInSpace.com, an Australian amateur astronomy website with some great information.Do these steps and soon you're astrophotos will have those cool diffraction spikes on them as well! Look forward to my published photographs of Mars (similar to one already posted) stack...

Pay your mortgage down in a fraction of the usual time
2007-12-03 19:10:00 I am a fan of, and have written bits about 'The Good News Network' in previous posts. I occasionally check their site for news that I know will lift my spirits rather than tear them down. Today I came upon something that I hadn't heard of before. I have to say beforehand that I haven't done much research on this mortgage program, but from what I have read so far, I like the idea. A company called United First Financial has a mortgage program available that allows you to pay of your mortgage in much less time than usual. It's called the Money Merge Account accelerated mortgage program, and they claim that it has already worked for many people in Europe, Australia and now in the United States. They tried it out in Denver with success and are confident that its future looks bright. The link to the article on Good News Network is here, so you you can read more about it for yourself. I still need to do a lot of research on it too, so you may see a future post from me on this ...

Marion Jones stripped of medal for pine tar infraction
2007-10-06 21:53:00 LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND -- In an altogether unprecedented and completely shocking development, U.S. Olympic sprinter Marion Jones has been stripped of her relay gold medal from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games for putting too much pine tar on the baton."Ms. Jones put more than the allowable seventeen centimetres of pine tar on the baton," said a representative of the International Olympic Committee. "This provided her an enormous advantage in the race. Not having to worry about dropping the baton, or anything like that ... I mean, she might as well have simply cut the distance for the race in half."Jones initially claimed she did not realize what the substance that she'd placed upon the baton was. "Hogwash," said the IOC official. "She knew what it was and what it was used for. She used the pine tar with full knowledge of its uses and impact. And she will pay the price."Jones is also being investigated for having "corked" her legs – making her overall weight much lighter by replacing...

Hulk Hogan’s Son Fined $1,000 For Traffic Infraction
2007-09-25 17:16:00 Hulk Hogan’s son, Nick Bollea, has pleaded no contest to a charge of speeding in a construction zone. On Aug. 10, a Pinellas Park police officer spotted Bollea going almost double the speed limit. According to Ron Stuart, a spokesman for the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Clearwater, Judge William Overton adjudicated him guilty Monday morning and ordered a fine of $1,000, the maximum fine for the offense. The judge also ordered the 17-year-old to complete a 12-hour driver improvement course within 90 days. Furthermore, the judge adjudicated Bollea guilty on a failure to wear a seatbelt charge and and fined him $73.50. The Pinellas Park traffic stop happened a few weeks before Bollea crashed a yellow Supra into a palm tree in Clearwater, injuring his passenger John Graziano, who remains in a medically induced coma at a hospital. Police said Bollea was speeding in that accident and are still investigating. No charges have been filed in that case. Source: Central Florida News ETA: Th...
Decoder Ring - Fractions
2007-09-24 20:29:00 This record sounds out of time as if jettisoned in from the previous decade. It is the sound of This Mortal Coil, Slowdive, Lush or (dare I say it) Cock Robin at their most effervescent. The truth is that it was only created in 2005 by Sydney 6-piece Decoder Ring for their 3rd album. Previous to this the band had penned the music to Aussie film ?Somersault? which was universally acclaimed and scooped the band an Australian Film Institute soundtrack of the year award. ?Fractions? builds so incrementally you could be genuinely jolted when it finally bursts into life with softly flickering guitars and torrential electronics filling the air like a million butterflies. The effect is spine tingling, made all the more alluring by lead singer Lenka Kripac?s smouldering vocals. The most forward thinking record to take you back for quite some time. Western Maine's Fractionation Woes - A Step Backwards For A GREENER Maine
2007-07-18 18:42:00 Is it coincidence his enthusiasm for fractionation, the science of turning forest products into biofuel, evaporated when state lawmakers refused to foot the bill? Attempts by Sen. Bruce Bryant, D-Dixfield, to first secure a $50 million bond, and then $350,000 in annual biorefinery funding, were stymied this past session, told the SunJournal of Lewiston Maine. Tim Finn - Fraction To Much Friction (1984)
2007-06-04 10:14:00 Singer/songwriter keyboardist/guitarist Tim Finn was born in Te Awamutu, New Zealand. Influenced by not only British Invasion acts like the Beatles, the Move, and the Kinks, but also his Catholic upbringing and the communal sing-alongs of the native Maori people, Finn founded the '70s art-rock turned new wave band Split Enz, leading the band through several albums to moderate international success. The success of the between-albums solo project, Escapade, led to his leaving the band in 1983. He followed with the more ambitious second album, Big Canoe (1985) which went virtually ignored (it was unreleased in the U.S. until the success of his brother's band, Crowded House, stirred up enough interest by 1988). Finn returned in 1989 with a self-titled album for Capitol Records. Despite good reviews, this too failed to make much impact. He joined his brother Neil Finn's band, Crowded House, for their Woodface album but left mid-tour and released his fourth solo album, Before and After...

Anyone for fractional real estate in Central America?
2007-02-18 02:23:01 It isn’t easy to find fractional real estate for sale in Central America. Not right now. But the market is steadily evolving and fractionals are destined to become a hot trend in future years particularly in the vacation home sector. For fractional buyers it is often not a matter of being unable to afford a vacation home, but a case of not wanting the hassle and expense of maintaining a home 52 weeks of the year when they are likely to occupy it only for two or three weeks each year. It is simply a matter of cost-justifying the limited use of their home, especially if they have multiple second home/vacation properties. At the same time, buyers do not want to compromise on questions of value, equity and other benefits of second-home ownership. That is why, unlike time share, the fractional real estate product has evolved to include fee simple deeded ownership complete with title insurance. This ownership can be passed down through the generations in perpetuity or resold...
Fractions ~ of a cookie?
2007-01-25 22:48:00 So, my husband is having a discussion with my daughter about a cookie and I walk in in the middle of the conversation. ~What happened was~ While I'd been out of the room, my dh had given half of his half of a cookie ~ my dd was asking if she could have more and he was telling her that really it was too late for any more chocolate and he thought she'd had enough for now. Then I walked in to hear from dd to dh, "Well you know daddy, if you just gave me another half of a half ~ then I'll really only have had 1/2 of 1 cookie ~ because you gave me a quarter and 2 quarters equals a half."I was like Whoa! that was so cool ~ adding fractions..of a cookie ~ Sweet! Then I gave her half of my quarter ~ an eighth ; )Those things we use in every day life will be needed and learned when needed ~ the proof is in the cookie : )
