Sinatra Debuts at Number Two on Album Chart
2008-05-21 18:59:00 Ten years and one week after his death, Frank Sinatra has the number two album in the U.S. with Nothing But the Best. The album moved 99,000 copies last week and is bettered only by the new album by Death Cab for Cutie which sold 144,000.The last time Sinatra was this high on the album chart was 1993 with his first Duets album. Prior to thses two albums, you would have to go all the way back to 1966 for any album that did as well, when Strangers in the Night reached the top of the charts.The new Jason Mraz album is number three, which is notable because it is the first time in sixteen years that the Warner Music Group (WEA) has had the top three albums.Neil Diamond's Home Before Dark falls one to seven with sales of 59,000 (down 63%) while Madonna's Hard Candy moves three to eight on 53,000 (down 43%).Overall, album sales are down 13.5% from the same week last year.

The vote was 402-3. We assume the three no's were the only three that could read a calendar.Whitney Houston's marijuana possession charge stemming from a 2000 incident in Hawaii has been dropped. Shout Factory is preparing two DVD's of classic performances from Tammy Wynette and Marty Robbins. Songs will be taken from such programs as Pop Goes the Country, Town Hall Party and The Bill Anderson Show. Look for them on August 19.David Bowie says that he has NOT given permission for his songs to be used in a musical version of his film The Man Who Fell to Earth. He stated that the rumors were "absolute toss" and he didn't even know the name of the director, Peter Schaufuss. 2008-05-17 09:05:00 Tina Sinatra, youngest daughter of Frank Sinatra, told an interviewer from Canada's Sun Media that a biopic of her father was a go and Martin Scorsese is tentatively scheduled to direct. Peter Buck of R.E.M. is one of four musicians who are collaborating as a group known as the Baseball Project. Their first record, Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails, is due on July 8 from Yep Roc and revolves around baseball greats (Ted Williams, Mark McGwire, Jackie Robinson) and lesser knowns. Also in the group are Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, R.E.M.), Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate) and Linda Pitmon (Miracle 3).Van Halen has begun filming shows on their tour for the eventual release of a DVD.Sparks began their 20-night run at London's Islington Academy on Friday with each show being a full playing of one of their albums (plus other hits). It is expected a 21st night will be added to accommodate their new album, Exotic Creatures of the Deep.

On June 10, another souvenir of the reunion will be released in DVD for with When in Rome. The track list for the Rome show is the same as that on the Live Over Europe release.In an ironic twist, Frank Sinatra's long-term press agent, Warren Cowan, died on Wednesday at the age of 87. First day issue stamps will be sold in post offices throughout the city.
