Frank Zappa: Classical Selection new CD
2011-03-08 21:30:00
Frank Zappa's Classical Selection: The Dissonant Classics That Informed and Inspired Zappa (2 CD Set) A man of hugely eclectic tastes, Frank Zappa was a lover of everything from Doo-Wop to Heavy Metal and from Jazz-Funk to New Wave. Indeed a radio show he produced for the BBC in 1980 found him playing records by Edgar Varese and Igor Stravinsky, representing his love of modern classical music. Featuring nineteenth and twentieth century mavericks as diverse as Wagner, Holst, Ravel, Boulez, Stockhausen, Schoenberg, Penderecki, Harry Partch and John Cage - in addition to the aforementioned Stravinsky and Varese - this collection illustrates the impulse for many of Zappa's own compositions and as a guide to the music Frank Vincent took to his heart and cherished throughout the major part of his tragically short life. Including fully illustrated 16 page booklet with extensive notes by music historian Derek Barker, this delightful package finally reveals what it was that informed so muc...

Afternoon Update - Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond, Frank Zappa, Brian May
2008-05-09 01:20:00
What do you get when you see Bruce Springsteen in a small theater? Last night he and the E-Street Band played a fund raiser at and for the Count Basie Theater in New Jersey and the lucky few who made it got to hear an all-70's show, including complete playings, in order, of both the Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town albums. They even got the Max Weinberg 7 horn section on a few songs in addition to the regular E-Street Band horns. Neil Diamond's "surprise" show at the Bitter End in New York last night was an obvious sellout with speakers being put in the windows so the unlucky fans could hear the show. The seven song set included three songs from his mid-60's days at Bang Records, three from the new album Home Before Dark and the classic Sweet Caroline. Diamond revealed to the crowd that he had played one of his selections, Kentucky Woman, on that very stage forty years ago.The set list:Solitary ManDon?t Go ThereHome Before DarkPretty Amazing GraceKentucky WomanCh...

Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention: Freak Out
2008-03-23 16:59:00

Frank Zappa - Zappa/Wazoo
2007-12-28 23:42:00
The big brass band that Frank Zappa briefly took on the road in 1972, just before the release of his instrumental LP The Grand Wazoo, was an army of twenty out for serious business. “Nobody sings,” Zappa wrote at the time. “Nobody dances. They just play music.” They didn’t do it often enough. This two-CD ...
The Twisted, Progressive Guitar Work of Frank Zappa Live
2007-12-28 07:01:00
It was a good day yesterday, at least from a musical standpoint for me, as it certainly was a sad day from a world events view what with the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, (condolences to the entire nation of Pakistan and all those affected by the tragedy). I spent most of the day listening to Frank Zappa wail away on guitar… while working, but still a good time. It was probably myth and legend that first drew me to the music of Zappa, but after a bit of a grace period, I’ve really started to dig it, especially his guitar work. It’s been months since I first heard him play and there was an immediate impact, but I didn’t realize how much until just recently. Now I own a number of his albums and find that his guitar playing has had a huge impact on my own music. I’d best describe Zappa’s guitar style as beautifully fractured and progressive, but also extremely melodic. At times he’s very harmonically oriented, b...

Frank Zappa Interview 1981, Interview by Pennsylvania Cop
2007-11-02 05:38:00
Zappa talks about music, the music industry, career and business, creativity, government, drugs, drug use and legalization and self-responsibility "There are two things you have to do, one of them is to not stop and the other one is to keep going. But when you get there you will find that it is still tough." This is the first part, there are also parts 2-4.
In The Spotlight: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention
2007-08-08 22:15:00
Rock’s closest thing to a true renaissance man, Frank Zappa was a brilliant guitarist, a superb composer, a matchless bandleader, and an incomparable social satirist. He started out in the ’60s as the leader of the zany avant-rock pioneers the Mothers. In 1966, when even the Doors and the Grateful Dead were still at a ...
Frank Zappa gets a street named after him
2007-08-04 04:21:00
Music News reports : AC/DC are not the only rock icons to be honored with their very own street. Add legendary musical mindbender Frank Zappa to that list. That's right. The city of Berlin have honored the late Zappa with his very own street in the eastern part of the city.Frank Zappa Strasse, formerly Street 13, lies in an industrial area in the eastern part of the city that was once behind the Iron Curtain. The street is home to Orwo Haus, a former Communist-era film factory that now provides practice studios for more than 160 bands, according to AP.

And speaking of guitars… Frank Zappa Straße in Berlin?
2007-07-29 21:54:00
My guitar wants to kill your mama. No, just kidding. That’s just an old Frank Zappa song. And now Berlin is honoring him by naming a street in Marzahn-Hellersdorf after him. They are going to call it: Frank Zappa Straße. Not necessarily for that song, but still. And whoever said that brown shoes don’t make it? He did, of course. And it kinda goes like this: Brown shoes don’t make it Brown shoes don’t make it Quit school, why fake it? Brown shoes don’t make it? TV dinner by the pool Watch your brother grow a beard Got another year of school You’re OK, he’s too weird Be a plumber He’s a bummer He’s a bummer every summer Be a loyal plastic robot For a world that doesn’t care Smile at every ugly Shine on your shoes and cut your hair Be a jerk and go to work Be a jerk and go to work Be a jerk and go to work Be a jerk and go to work Do your job, and do it right Life’s a ball! (TV tonight!) Do you love it, do you hate it? There it...
Frank Zappa - Lather
2007-04-06 22:05:00
Recorded at various times with a revolving cast of characters, the huge mass of material known as ‘Lather’ was to be released in the late ’70s when Zappa’s record company refused to put it out. Instead, they insisted that he owed them four individual records. So, the unflappable Zappa chopped ‘Lather’ into four sections (released ...

Frank Zappa - Have I Offended Someone?
2007-01-29 05:38:01
This collection celebrates Frank Zappa, the cultural fly-in-the-ointment. It was assembled by the man himself in the last years of his life. The lyrics take on everything from Christians to Jews, and from record company executives to feminists. While raising hackles was often the end result with the dropping of these numbers onto the cultural ...
