My god - it?s full of stars: 2001, Frankenstein and autonomous technology
2008-04-06 15:00:00
Part one in a two-part series. I used to work with a HAL 9000. Back when I was at US West in the late ’90s we had a voice system into which we would record the day’s company news so that employees without Internet access could dial in and keep up with the latest events. As with any such system there was a dial-in sequence, buttons that had to be pressed in a certain order, etc. One day, as I was working through the first stage of the sequence, our phone system apparently achieved sentience. For reasons that I still can’t explain, a decade later, and that nobody at the time had any clue about, the machine sort of … intuited what I was about to do. It performed an action or two that, put simply, it could not do. My assistant was standing beside me - we were working on speaker at this point - and all of a sudden the voice system began acting on its own. Not glitching, mind you - it wasn’t malfunctioning. It was moving merrily ahead without us. My assistant...
War and Postwar: a look at LIFE and technology
2008-04-03 20:11:00
Part three in a series. In an age and a culture dominated by scientism, the word ?sample? tends to invoke the adjectival ?representative,? and I cannot begin to imagine culling a meaningful representative sample from LIFE?s 400-plus issues. Still, it seems important to devote a few pages to what happened with LIFE and technology between the Fort Peck Dam and Apollo 17. I will center this discussion on innovations and events that, from our perspective here at the end of the century, appear to have left significant marks on history. The Medical Morality Play LIFE?s coverage of medical technology began early and covered, through the decades, the research, development, and application of treatments for a variety of diseases and disorders afflicting humanity. Vivid, often grotesque photography illustrated everything from cancer treatment to brain and open heart surgery, and the magazine?s 1937 photo-essay on cancer demonstrated the optimism with which LIFE viewed technology of the med...

ArtSunday: ??to see and be amazed?: The LIFE and Times of Technology in Ame
2008-03-30 17:06:00
Part one in a series. During its 36-year run, LIFE Magazine traversed a period of technological innovation and peril unsurpassed in the recorded history of humanity. As the first issue was released in November of 1936, a resurgent Germany was constructing the most awesome war machine the world had yet seen, a development that literally threatened the very future of the hemisphere. LIFE?s final issue went to press at the end of 1972, roughly three weeks after NASA?s last manned mission to the moon, Apollo 17, closed the books on a program that proved — theoretically, at least — that humanity was not inevitably bound to this planet. The technological distance between these two moments is mind-boggling. German engineers working on the development of rocketry could perhaps, just barely, envision a trip to the moon, but for most everybody else such an idea remained the stuff of pulp science fiction. Nonetheless, human technology did cover this distance, and it did so in t...

Del Toro Thinking (But Not Writing) About Frankenstein - SendMeRSS
2008-01-03 23:24:00
Del Toro Thinking (But Not Writing) About Frankenstein Written by David MorganDirector Guillermo del Toro recently talked with MTV about his plans regarding some major fantasy franchises. The Hobbit: He didn't really expect to end up directing it. Harry Potter: He likes the series and would consider directing the seventh movie. But he had more to say about a new adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Before the strike he began making notes about his own "definite take" on the classic horror novel, but he says that since November 1st he's completely put down his pen in deference of the WGA. He admits, however, that he's continued drawing in his famous notebook. He says that the only way to truly depict the Shelley novel is to make a four-hour miniseries, but believes that there are "permutations in which you can tell the myth in a different way."So he's still working on this project that he's been talking about for years, but don't...

Guillermo Del Toro Talks About Upcoming ?Frankenstein? Project - SendMeRSS
2008-01-03 20:18:00
Guillermo Del Toro Talks About Upcoming 'Frankenstein' ProjectIt's been awhile since we have seen a worthy remake of the film adaptation to Mary Shelley's classic, 'Frankenstein.' (I like to pretend the one with Robert De Niro didn't exist)  Apparently, Guillermo Del Toro is up to the challenge of not only remaking it, but also re-imagining (a new term created after Rob Zombie's Halloween) the classic as well. Slashfilm gives us this: Del Toro says that his vision, which is in the earliest stages of pre-production, will not be a literal adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel, rather a permutation on the myth. "The only way to do the Shelley novel is to actually do a four-hour miniseries," he said. "But I think there permutations in which you can tell the myth in a different way." Say Del Toro. I am really happy about this news because I truly respect Guillermo Del Toro as a director. He is one of the only directors out there that can master both mainstream films like Mi...

Adult jokes-Frankenstein
2007-12-19 11:35:00
After forty years of marriage, Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein came to a stand still in their love life. Each night Frankenstein would come home from work, eat his dinner, and sit in front of the television set until he fell asleep. Dissatisfied with this arrangement, the Bride decided to see a therapist."He's never in the mood," complained the Bride."Try a romantic candlelight dinner," suggested the therapist. The next day, the Bride returned to the therapist with a frown on her face. "He's still not in the mood," she complained."This time," the therapist recommended, "try something more seductive. Put on some sexy lingerie and lure him into the bedroom."But the Bride returned to the therapist the following day complaining that her monster of a husband was still not in the mood.As a final piece of advice, the therapist said, "You should try to recreate the moment that first sparked your romance."The next day the Bride returned with a huge grin on her face. "Thank you so...

Karl Rove's Frankenstein - Part II
2007-12-15 01:03:00
A few days ago I discussed poor Rich Lowry's sudden realization the the crazy bible thumpers of the Religious Right had taken over the Republican party. I said at the time: This was oh so predictable. Karl Rove marshaled the 16th century masses to vote against their own best interests in order to stop a woman's right to choose, an individuals right to die with dignity and to enforce selected portions of Leviticus. They all but took over the party. Well they are once again being ignored by the party's movers and shakers and they don't like it. Well guess what? They have their own guy in the race, Mike Huckabee, and they don't see any reason to support the anti Leviticus, Rudy, or the cultist, Mitt. A Frankenstein monster indeed.Well poor Rich is at it again.HuckacideA shiny Christmas present for the Democrats The GOP?s social conservatism inarguably has been an enormous benefit to the party throughout the past 30 years, winning over conservative Democrats and lower-income voters...
Karl Rove's Frankenstein
2007-12-06 03:55:00
This is an interesting little post by The National Review's Rich Lowry:Revenge of the Evangelicals Remember how evangelicals had "matured"? Remember how the war on terror had replaced social issues? It shouldn't be hard, since all those things were being said a couple of weeks ago (heck, still being said maybe even a few days ago). Part of what seems to be going on with the Huckabee surge is evangelicals sticking their thumbs in the eyes of the chattering class?we're still here, we still matter, and we still care about our signature issues. Remember the lack of excitement in the Republican race, especially among dispirited social conservatives? Well, now there is some excitement, and it isn't over free market economics or the war on terror, but a candidate who doesn't speak compellingly about either of those things but instead about social issues. As a friend I was talking to a little earlier points out, the most important moment of the campaign so far came when a social conser...

The foaming bitch on wheels is waking the dead at three in the morning, according to the leaking insiders. Ross pissed off Katie Couric's people. Ross accused the Stilettoed One of stealing a guest. Apparently CBS is happy with the draconian Ross. Maybe the bitch'll stroke out from the self-induced stress. I've worked with women like that. Intolerable monsters. When it comes to Judgment Day the gatekeepers won't give a shit that sub-human scrum Shelley turned around "The Early Show."
Young Frankenstein
2007-11-16 17:08:00
The sets and the special effects are spectacular -- they should be, they cost a reported $20 million. But the most important thing, the humor, isn’t there. The book and lyrics just aren’t funny. Line after line and lyric after lyric just hang there. It’s a musical comedy without the comedy. What a shame that this production is on while truly lovely shows like “Cyrano†and a fabulous musical like “Legally Blonde†are darkened by the strike. “Young Frankenstein†shouldn’t just be dark, it should never have seen the light of day. The lyrics to a song from the much funnier Mel Brooks musical “The Producers†come to mind: “We are still in shock/Who produced this shlock?â€

NEW YORK (AP) — In the last six years, Roger Bart has had quite a ride. “The Producers,” of course. Movies. Television. Remember George, the psychotic pharmacist on “Desperate Housewives”? Young Frankenstein - Scary!

At $450 a seat, presale tickets for Young Frankestein have already recouped their $16 million budget. That’s the good news for the new Mel Brooks musical that just opened. The bad news - it’s reportedly atrocious. The musical is based upon his cult classic film from the 1970s. But yet the reviews are monsterously horrible. Here are some of the reviews: The Hollywood Reporter said the show as a whole “doesn’t live up to the level of its predecessor?nor, for that matter, to the comedic brilliance of its film inspiration.” Brooks’ score was deemed “little more than serviceable.” Variety said it’s ”just good enough”. The Chicago Tribune said ”They’ve created a…dud.” And the Toronto Star “It’s not alive!” Image Credit: E Online

iPhone Brick Fix: Dr. Frankenstein Would Be Proud

Ever since the release of the iPhone this summer, it's been a battle of wills between Apple and hackers to see who would ultimately win control of the much-coveted device. This week the hackers scored another point by devising a way to roll back the clock, in a limited way, to before their phones were disabled by Apple's most recent upgrade.
Frankenstein (1910)
2007-10-01 00:00:00
Frankenstein is a 1910 film made by Edison Studios that was written and directed by J. Searle Dawley. It was the first motion picture adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The unbilled cast included Augustus Phillips as Dr. Frankenstein, Charles Ogle as the Monster, and Mary Fuller as the doctor's fiancée.Shot in three days, it was filmed at the Edison Studios in the Bronx, New York City. Although some sources credit Thomas Edison as the producer, he in fact played no direct part in the activities of the motion picture company that bore his name. For many years, this film was believed to be lost. In 1963, a plot description and stills were discovered published in an old Edison film catalog. In the 1950s a print of this film was purchased by a Wisconsin film collector, Alois F. Dettlaff, who did not realize its rarity until many years later. Its existence was first revealed in the mid-1970s. Although somewhat deteriorated, the film was in viewable condition, complete with ti...

How Extreme Weather Inspired Frankenstein [Framing Science]
2007-08-14 11:15:00
As part of its Climate Change Connections series, NPR’s Nell Greenfieldboyce contributes a fascinating feature on how the extreme weather of 1816 likely inspired Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. That year, the volcano Mount Tambora erupted in Indonesia sending vast amounts of dust into the atmosphere, influencing climate across the globe. In Europe, it was called “The Year Without a Summer,” or “eighteen hundred and froze to death.” Read the comments on this post… Original post by http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/-ScienceblogsCombinedFeed/~3/144-025370/how_extreme_weather_insp-irted.php
