Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything# Author:Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner# Format:PDF 2.3MB# Page Count: 242 pages# Publisher: William Morrow; 1 edition (April 12, 2005)# Language: English# ISBN-10: 006073132X# ISBN-13: 978-0060731328Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? What kind of impact did Roe v. Wade have on violent crime? These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He is a much heralded scholar who studies the stuff and riddles of everyday life-;from cheating and crime to sports and child rearing-;and whose conclusions regularly turn the conventional wisdom on its head. He usually begins with a mountain of data and a simple, unasked question. Some of these questions concern life-and-death issues; others have an ad...

Bill James Meets Freakonomics
2008-04-03 13:46:00
Some interesting items from a Q&A Bill James did with the NY Times’s Freakonomics blog: A: Over time, every hitter will hit better when he has the platoon advantage than when he does not. There may be an exception, maybe two exceptions. You see a lot of reverse splits or backwards splits in one-year data ? ...
Freakonomics Blog on Boy Crisis
2008-03-13 05:00:00
Gosh, but I loved Freakonomics.  The analysis of the economics of drug dealing eye-opening, and their explanation of why high-stakes testing in public schools encourages cheating was . . . well . . . mostly discouraging.  And I will confess that I seriously considered their section on the implications of baby-naming when I named my children.  Apparently, I am a huge dork. Anyway, the reason I bring this up is because today, the New York Times' Freakonomics Blog features some thoughts on the Boy Crisis.  They don't really touch on anything that a regular reader here wouldn't already be aware of (e.g. boys are struggling/why?/what do we do about it?), but it has touched off a lively debate about the issue.  So, if you feel like stirring things up, arguing with naysayers, or just want to encourage more discussion of the issue, I suggest you check it out here.  Oh, and for the curious, my remarks on that page are at number 25, to wit: As the head o...

The Freakonomics blog recently ran a contest asking for a new six-word motto for the U.S., and after receiving 1,200+ comments, they narrowed it down to five finalists: (1) "The Most Gentle Empire So Far" (2) "You Should See the Other Guy" (3) "Caution! Experiment in Progress Since 1776″ (4) "Just Like Canada, With Better ...

Freakonomics

Hi allI got a great book as a new years present. It is a "Freakonomics" book by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. It's a marvelous piece of work. The book (I got to about a 1/4) is easily read and fascinating. I like the way it causes me to rethink my attitude and understanding of information; and even more so the sources I get information from.Levitt is a brilliant economist. He's one of the youngest people to receive an honorary John Bates Clark Medal (which is a kind of a Nobel Price for young economists). He says that's he's not a much of a mathematician, so likes to employ economy tools on other aspects of life. At the top of his list is "crime". He likes asking questions which seem unrelated, such as "What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common?".Maybe reading this book will help me to develop understanding regarding incentives for Gentoo developers and community. Who knows? So far, the book is very interesting and easy to read an comprehend. So far - ver...

by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner Interesting book… probably most well-known for pointing out the correlation of Roe v. Wade and the drop in crime in the 1990’s. The authors do not applaud the correlation as an intended consequence, but they do point it out.

Freakonomics: Why I sold Google at $741 [Digg]
2007-11-15 22:17:00
Keyword prices are inflating faster than search is growing, which causes advertiser ROI to diminish and jacks up Google earnings in the near term. Google can ride this wave for only so long. They will eventually need to find new sources of growth, either inside or outside the search realm...

Help Wanted...or, Catholic Freakonomics

A Busy Week In The News, Part 5I know that I should be 100% percent behind this prayer when I hear it. While when most other people offer up this prayer, it is in the hopes that bright, spritely young men will come forward to meet the ministerial needs of the Church... when we say that prayer, it's for co-workers. And I'm going need co-workers - after all, when I want to stay in and watch Meet The Press on the occasional Sunday, SOMEBODY'S going to have to cover Mass - so I should be ecstatic to hear prayers for vocations. But I have to confess that they mostly end up pissing me off. It's like an overweight person saying to you, "You know, I really want to lose weight. What should I do?" And you, being the good Dr. Phil watcher that you are, might say to that person,"Well, in order to lose weight, you need to diet and exercise."To which our friend responds, "But I don't want to diet or exercise. What else should I do?"As many of my former employers might tell you, I get v...
freakonomics author asked to pay for an interview
2007-07-28 23:31:00
Freakonomics is one of the best selling business books in recent years and its author Steven D. Levitt is popular on the speaking circuit, for those who can afford him. Steven is a person with lots of requests and demands for his time, for interviews and other apperances. He was all set to help out American Airlines and do an interview for their in-flight radio station. I will let him tell the rest of the story..."It’s rare that an interview request catches my attention. I got one today, though, that did. It read as follows:My name is [REDACTED] and I am a independent producer for the special in-flight radio program “America’s Innovators and Entrepreneurs,” which will air worldwide on American Airlines’ “FORTUNE In-Flight Radio” Channel during the entire month of December 2007. This special on-going radio series spotlights compelling profiles of innovators and entrepreneurs — from small businesses to large enterprises — the peopl...
Steven Levitt: the Freakonomics of inner-city gangs
2007-07-25 15:37:00
Good morning all! This is an excellent 20 minute video by Steven Levitt. Levitt is the author of Freakonomics, a book on the economics of interesting social problems such as abortion and crime. This video is interesting to watch and pertains to finance because Levitt outlines the pecuniary structure of a Chicago street gang he studied. While you probably should NOT assume that his study applies to all street gangs, it is nevertheless an interesting view on an otherwise hidden and exotic world. Check it out if you've got a spare moment. Best,James

Book Review: Freakonomics-Interesting, but a little long-winded
2007-06-08 04:33:00
Normally, an economist employs his training to forecast financial activity. Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, however, thought it would be interesting to apply the cold, methodical craft of the economist to both important contemporary social issues and inconsequential but illustrative and interesting aspects of life that people usually take for granted. The novelty of this approach has not only made Freakonomics a best-seller, but has made it a rare ?paradigm-shifter,? a work that actually budges opinion and adds fresh perspective instead of one that reinforces convention and soothes a calcified mind. Levitt and Dubner shine their reason on such varied subjects as the Ku Klux Clan, sumo wrestlers, schools, parenting, accidents, drug dealers, and abortion. People may react to the illumination with anger or delight, but it?s guaranteed that they?ll gain new insight into human nature and the operation of the world. All of the chapters have lessons to teach, but the one I tend...

Steven Levitt And Stephen Dubner - Freakonomics
2006-12-23 15:28:03
From O, The Oprah Magazine : Ellen Pompeo’s Bookshelf, January 2007 Freakonomics - A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime? These may not sound like typical questions for an econo-mist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He is a much-heralded scholar who studies the riddles of everyday life?from cheating and crime to sports and child-rearing?and whose conclusions turn conventional wisdom on its head. Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They usually begin with a mountain of data and a simple question.
