Fred Thompson is Writing for Townhall
2008-05-16 14:29:00
Fred Thompson, my first choice for the Republican presidential nominee, is now writing for Townhall.com. In his first article, he writes: Our nation has some serious issues to work through for today ? and for the next generation. Now isn?t the time for conservatives to be looking for a tailored message or a politically expedient route to victory if the end result is going to be the inevitable slide toward the liberalization and secularization of America, and the growth of government and loss of freedom that inevitably ensues. For us conservatives it must be about principles and policies that are grounded in freedom, free markets and the rule of law. That?s what I?ve been talking and writing about for the past few years, and that?s what I want to talk write about here on Townhall and in the new Townhall Magazine. I have to wonder, with him having written the above, how he can support John McCain for president. With John’s faith in the CoGW, you can expect an expansion of gove...

Christopher Dodd, 63, who has two daughters, age 6 and 2, with his second wife Jackie Clegg Dodd. And on the right, Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, 65, has two toddlers with his second wife, Jeri Kehn.Email Print Buzz up!on Yahoo! What exactly do we read in these tea leaves? First, that these two candidates mirror a demographic trend. Older fathers are on the rise. That's not too surprising. But here's the rub: the children of older fathers face particularly high risks of schizophrenia and autism. According to a g...

Who Will McCain Choose for Veep?
2008-03-05 15:03:00
Now that he has it all cinched up, John McCain has to pick a vice-president. Who he chooses could help him court conservative voters, or could further alienate them: “For Reagan in 1980, age was a big question, was a bigger issue than it is for McCain,” said McCain adviser Charlie Black. “The day Reagan picked George Bush, it went away. People looked at it and said, ‘Oh, we know this guy, we know he can handle it.”‘ By contrast, Americans were so disenchanted with Bush’s vice president, Dan Quayle, that the Bush team considered but decided against dumping Quayle from the ticket in the elder Bush’s 1992 re-election bid, which he lost. McCain aides made clear McCain is a long way from picking someone, saying the campaign had not yet even begun to set up process by which to evaluate potential vice presidential nominees. Some names that have been floated include: (Colin) Powell, 70, has said he does not want the job but Brinkley said Repu...

Romney Endorses McCain
2008-02-15 20:16:00
One week after leaving the race, former Massachusetts Governor announced his support for presumptive nominee John McCain yesterday. Though Romney and McCain had a tense (at best) relationship on the trail, Romney hinted in his withdrawal speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference that a McCain endorsement was eminent. The two often exchanged personal barbs in debates and in campaign ads, but their past (and most likely lingering) hostility was well hidden in yesterday's appearance in Boston. Romney called McCain an "American hero," while seeking to put the past behind them. "Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent," Romney told reporters, adding, "Primaries are tough. Now we move forward."Given McCain's sizable delegate lead, it is no surprise that Romney is endorsing his former rival. Besides seeking to unite the party, Romney is also hoping to build goodwill with rank and file Republicans. At the sam...
A Letter From Youssif?s Parents
2008-02-12 00:20:00
Youssif before the attack. Youssif after the attack. Do you remember Youssif? I do. He was a little Iraqi boy who was burned for no reason at all. Some agent of evil threw gasoline on this beautiful five year old boy and set him on fire. No reason has ever been given. When I heard about his burns, and that he was coming to America, I donated to the Children’s Burn Foundation. Not saying that to brag, but to explain why I got this e-mail today: February 5, 2008 Dear Friends, You have given Youssif and my family many miracles. When we first arrived in the United States, we didn?t know where we would live. We didn?t know anyone. But we knew that Youssif would be getting the help he needed. In September when we landed in Los Angeles, it had been 9 months since Youssif was burned. His scars were big and tight. He could not smile. He could not open or close his mouth. He could only eat by pushing soft food into his mouth. My joyful Youssif was gone. Now, Youssif eats ...

Mitt Romney To Drop Out
2008-02-07 19:10:00
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is preparing to leave the presidential race today, announcing his decision in remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Romney's decision was preceded by disappointing Super Tuesday results and a number of silver medals in crucial early contests. As we noted yesterday, Romney seems to be stepping aside both for the good of the party and for the preservation of his own future ambitions. After meeting with top advisers, he has apparently determined that, though still technically attainable, the nomination is simply out of reach. In his speech later today, he will tell supporters:I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know. But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make i...

The many deaths of Rudy Giuliani
2008-01-30 22:15:00
“The Universe hates me you know. I don’t know why; I’ve never done anything to the Universe to… Well, alright. A few things, but after a while you’d think it would be enough. ‘Yes, we’ve had our fun with Londo Mollari for now. Perhaps it is time to move on and find someone else to play with.’” — Londo Mollari, Babylon 5 Hey, wasn’t someone else dropping out of the 2008 campaign again? Who was it? Fred Thompson? Oh, yeah, right–this guy: Giuliani’s unconventional strategy of largely bypassing the early voting states and focusing on more populous, delegate-rich states produced just one delegate, a bunch of sixth-place finishes and made him the odd man out. His best showing was Florida, where he had staked his candidacy. He finished a distant third. It was a remarkable defeat for the ex-mayor who entered the race more than a year ago with an aura of invincibility, leading national polls and earning a reputati...

Florida Republican Primer: Make Or Break
2008-01-30 01:13:00
While the Democratic contest is largely without consequence, the stakes on the Republican side couldn't be higher. The state that gave Republicans the White House in 2000 will go a long way towards determining their nominee in 2008. John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Rudy Giuliani have the most to gain or lose as the results come in tonight, so let's take a look at where each stands.McCain has surge from nowhere to the top of the polls, as he has done in states across the country following his comeback win in New Hampshire. He has collected endorsements from Florida's popular Governor Charlie Crist--more popular with moderates than conservatives--and Senator Mel Martinez. A McCain victory tonight cements his status as the frontrunner heading into February 5 and sets up what is likely a two-person battle with Mitt Romney. The conservative base and anti-McCain factions will likely begin to line up with more vigor against him over the next week as well as the prospect of a McCain nom...

Fred Thompson Tucks His Tail
2008-01-23 07:18:00
Pardon the inflammatory title. Sometimes in the quest for alliteration sacrifices must be made.Fred Thompson bowed out of the race for the GOP nomination today. From The AP: NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson quit the Republican presidential race on Tuesday, after a string of poor finishes in early primary and caucus states. "Today, I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort," Thompson said in a statement. Thompson's fate was sealed last Saturday in the South Carolina primary, when he finished third in a state that he had said he needed to win. In the statement, Thompson did not say whether he would endorse any of his former rivals. He was one of a handful of members of Congress who supported Arizona Sen. John McCain in 2000 in his unsuccessful race against George W. Bush for the party nomination. Additionally the unofficial word is that ...
Too Funny
2008-01-23 06:54:00
Did Fred Thompson take the Fredheads for a ride in that red pickup truck? Is all he ever wanted to be was John McCain's VP? Did the entire thing just get out of control? According to FOX's Carl Cameron the answer to all of the above may be yes. Back in March of 07 at the CPAC convention in DC several former Fred Thompson Congressional staffers told me Fred Thompson was thinking about a run. Some of his Tennessee cronies had been talking him up too.I reported first that he was eyeing a White House bid. At the time several insiders told me OFF THE RECORD that it was largely a trial ballon to guage his popularity and float his name as a possible vice presidential nominee. I was sworn to silence. Those insiders have now lifted the conditions on our conversations. From March to August of 07 through postponed announcement days, staff changes, firings, resignations and general disarray the Thompson camp was stunned by the incredibly positive response and didn?t really know how to manage i...
