Four treasonous White Sox players file for free agency
2011-10-31 18:35:00 Mark Buehrle, Ramon Castro, Juan Pierre, and Omar Vizquel all filed for free agency Sunday, meaning another season will go by where no player with an expiring contract neglects to file any paperwork, continues to show up to the ballpark on a daily basis, mills about in the lobby of the executive offices, uses the... Eight Red Sox File For Free Agency
2011-10-30 21:51:00 With MLB free agency kicking off at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday morning, eight members of the Boston Red Sox filed for free agency. Yesterday I had written there were six but I had forgotten about two of them. The eight free agents for the Red Sox are Erik Bedard, J.D. Drew, Conor Jackson, Trever Miller, David Ortiz, Jonathan Papelbon, Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield. The two I had forgotten were Jackson and Miller. The Red Sox can now talk exclusively with those eight guys until 12:01 a.m. on Thursday when they can hear offers from the other 29 teams. As I said in the post yesterday, expect the Red Sox to concentrate right away on Ortiz and Papelbon. They are the two Type A free agents the Red Sox have. So if they did lose them, they would be awarded compensation in the form of a first round draft pick and a supplemental pick. Obviously, we hope it doesn't come to that but at least the Red Sox would get something if the pair or one of them decides to go somewhere else. Not to be ...

Chicago Bulls Shooting Guard Options - Free Agency or Trade?
2011-06-28 04:36:00 Assuming there will be a 2011-2012 NBA Season, the Chicago Bulls will most certainly be looking to bring in some veteran talent at the SG position. Options will exist through trade, and possibly through free agency depending upon the new CBA. The MLE (Mid Level Exception) is key to the Chicago Bulls being able to bring in a veteran through free agency. This CBA is so uncertain that no one knows if the MLE, a hard salary cap, or a flex cap will exist next season. For brevity sake, we will assume that the CBA will include a options for teams at the salary cap like the Chicago Bulls.Below are options through Free Agency and Trade that the Chicago Bulls...
Cubs' debt situation could affect free-agency plans
2011-06-04 07:28:00 There has been much written about the Cubs debt situation in the last couple of days. Gordon Wittenmyer's latest says Bud Selig isn't concerned by the Cubs finances, but a Cubs source says the debt will affect how they spend money over the next couple of seasons. Most financial and baseball pundits I've listened to since the story broke say the situation is nothing to be alarmed about and not unexpected. Tom Ricketts had to take on more debt to satisfy Sam Zell's structure requirements when it came to a deal, to avoid more a major capital gains hit. Wittenmyer's source says don't buy any Cubs Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder jerseys anytime soon. Not a big shocker to me....
Now To Free Agency We Go...
2011-05-04 18:33:00 DaBearsBlog's 'Bear Jew' t-shirt is now available for sale. If you got a few extra bucks in your wallet, this is a great way to show your support for the site. Free agency will come upon the NFL and the Chicago Bears at some point (we think) and at that point the Bears will need to address not only the expired contracts on their current roster but also their pressing positional needs. The offseason of 2009 brought us the franchise quarterback. The offseason of 2010 brought us one of the most dynamic defensive players in the sport. What will the offseason of 2011 bring? On the flipside we'll take a look at three positions of possible target....
Blackhawks Free Agency: The Case to Keep Troy Brouwer
2011-01-17 22:55:00 The focus of most Blackhawks fans and observers heading into the coming summer is on Brent Seabrook's restricted free agent status. I discussed that situation at length a few days ago, but there is another free agent that should be near the top of GM Stan Bowman's "To Re-Sign" List. Troy Brouwer is also a restricted free agent this summer, and he has earned a payday....
White Sox unleash hailstorm of free agency on the Western hemisphere
2010-12-03 08:44:00 A better showman would've spaced this out. After weeks, and I guess months at this point, of hemming and hawing about the amount of money available, not knowing what the future holds, and wishy-washy language about the off-season that convinced some that he was going to sit on his hands until March and just re-sign Mark Kotsay, Kenny Williams sprung into action on December 2nd. The White Sox signed Adam Dunn for 4 years/$56 million They non-tendered Bobby Jenks - setting him free into the wild Kenny Williams announced the team's desire to re-sign Paul Konerko And then the Sox went and re-signed A.J. Pierzysnki for 2 years/$8 million Good gravy.

2010-10-27 01:55:00 The wife of ace left-hander Cliff Lee was among family members of Texas Rangers players subjected to obscenities and taunts during the AL championship series at Yankee Stadium. Bulls Free Agency: Winner or Loser?
2010-07-18 12:48:00 If not first, Bulls handily proclaim second behind the off-balance powerhouse near South Beach for building talent via Free Agency. Bulls made it top priority to get better heading into the 2010-11 season by signing Carlos Boozer, a true threat at the four position, and actually doing away with what has come to be known as their "second nature" -- signing midgets alongside Derrick Rose. Ronnie Brewer restitutes the SG position easily. But coming as no surprise, what could of went wrong almost did. Orlando stepped in and saved Bulls organization from their own bias, matching a now overpaid Redick to essentially lounge around the perimeter and wait for Howard to kick-it-out. It's one thing to play two-guard at 6-foot-4,...
Free agency update: no special privileges for LeBron's friends
2010-07-05 15:56:00 Per Mike McGraw: During their meeting, the Bulls stressed there would be no special privileges for his friends and management team, like there have been in Cleveland. This ties in with what we know about the Bulls' MO. Their gimmick-less pitch (shoes excepted) was designed to be all business, as is this. They're taking a professional, sometimes even a blunt one, seemingly determined that the peripheral desires of LeBron and his young entourage will not undermine the franchise's self-imposed standards. It might not work. But it also might....
NBA vs. NHL: Comparing Opening Day Of Free Agency....
2010-07-01 23:01:00 Thank god for social networking. In an age where you can get all sorts of information quicker than you can snap your fingers, social networking is a great tool for sports geeks like us when it comes to the very latest in rumors around all of sport. It is so great that some of the rumors do not start from writers/columnists but the actual athletes themselves sometimes. And people wonder why newspapers are dying....it is simply because the better the technology gets, the quicker the information. Most people do not care about being right anymore, it is all about being first. July 1st was the start of both the NBA and the NHL free agency periods and using social networking...

Once you do that, you are on our list for a future spot in our print edition of the Fives. 1. What have you heard after one day of NBA free agency? 2. How will we know when LeBron James has decided where to play? 3. Why haven't we heard anything about NHL free agency? 4. What might ex-Cubs manager Dusty Baker say to his former team Thursday? 5. The fate of free agency may be decided on the court
2010-04-24 17:10:00 Amidst these NBA playoffs, the 2010 FA class may be decided. This is why I felt it was so important for the Bulls to be in these playoffs. While some disagreed with me, and may still disagree with me, the momentum the Bulls get by performing in these playoffs makes a huge difference in convincing a FA to come to this team in the off season....

How does a Boozer trade impact 2010 free agency?

Free Agency Picks Up
2009-02-12 23:05:00 Over the last 48 hours, a few of the top remaining free agents have found homes. It looks like Adam Dunn will be playing in D.C. for the next 2 seasons as he signed a two-year $20 million deal with the Nationals. Bobby Abreu also found a home, signing a bargain basement one-year, $5 million deal with the Angels. With those two back-up options off of the market, it would seem that the Dodgers need Manny Ramirez now more than ever. If they loose out on ManRam, they won't have a shot at legitimately replacing him. Whatever small percentage chance the Giants had at signing Manny Ramirez has likely gone out the window now under the current circumstances. The Dodgers are going to go all out for Manny and the Giants aren't going to be ready to compete with what they'll eventually offer. My guess is that Manny returns to LA for 3 years and $65 million within the next week or so. The Giants aren't likely to guarantee Manny anymore than one year, two years tops, but would probably be open...
Giants Active As Free Agency Begins
2008-11-17 22:36:00 The Giants made the first official signing of the MLB offseason which got underway Friday night. The team inked left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a 2-year deal, 8 million dollar deal on Monday. The 29 year-old went 1-1 with an impressive 3.33 era (1.77 away from Cincinnati) along with an impressive 80 strikeouts in 78 innings of work. Affeldt has really come into his own over the last 2 years, pitching his home games in 2 of the National Leagues toughest parks to pitch at (Colorado then Cincinnati), and is becoming one of the better left-handed set-up men in baseball. $4 million a year is a little steep for a reliever who isn't closing games but Affeldt has a rubber arm (former starter), is just entering his prime and in my opinion was the top lefty reliever available outside of only Brian Fuentes. The Giants also were in on Joe Beimel who has a combined 2.87 era over the last 3 seasons, but Affeldt is better at stranding runners than the former Dodger and can be used for more...
Free Agency Time!
2008-07-01 19:55:00 Today teams can start negotiating contracts with free agents. So there are plenty of rumors flying around.Baron DavisI really don't like the idea of BD opting out. It doesn't make sense financially, unless there's a sign-and-trade.Here are some numbers from a Ball Don't Lie post:Davis was due to make 17.8 million bucks next season, but faced with a stalemate with the Warriors over a contract extension, he's now left all of that on the table.Who cares about the extension now? Davis is 29 and despite past health issues, the big time 09-10 market might be better. Also, he's getting to that age where he probably wants to be with more of a real time contender (Clippers, stay away!).He should have focused on playing this year, get almost 18 mil (not too shabby) and worry about getting a raise next summer. I hope this isn't about a raise. If I'm a GM, this guy isn't worth any more than that. Let's say he wants a three year deal that would net him just as much, if not more, per ye...

Pavano starting to throw off a mound as free agency looms
2008-05-30 15:12:00 Righthander Carl Pavano, rehabbing from Tommy John surgery last year, has been throwing off a half-mound since last week and could be ready to throw off a mound next week. The $39.95 million bust of the New York Yankees has made just two starts since June 2005, and it is unlikely that he will be ready to contribute to this year's team before becoming a free agent this winter.

Packers admit they're not big on free agency?
2008-05-28 12:54:00 The story in the Green Bay Press-Gazette is about running back Ryan Grant's contract negotiations with the Packers, but the bigger story may be Green Bay admitting that they're not big spenders in the unrestricted free agency.Grant's agent Alan Herman spoke to the Press-Gazette regarding how the Packers like to do business in the NFL."The important issue is the club has indicated they're not big players in the free-agent market and they like to take care of their own," told the Press-Gazette. "Ryan had truly an extraordinary year and it wasn't like he was a flash in the pan. He played 12 games, that's a lot of games, at the highest level. Clearly, they know what they have and that's why the opportunity to get something done and keep him there for a long time is kind of apparent."General manager Ted Thompson showed his biggest willingness to be a spender in free agency before the 2006 season when he signed Ryan Pickett, Charles Woodson and Marquand Manuel all to lucrative cont...

San Francisco 49ers sign last of decent WR's on Free Agency Market
2008-03-15 00:18:00 ...UPDATE... The 49ers have released Veteran WR Darrell Jackson... Pro Football Talk lists the Bucs as a possible destination. At this point, why not? Bring in a cagillion players at one position and see who sticks. The 49ers have signed WR Bryant Johnson to a 1 Year deal, wow, one year? That's pretty sad. He clearly had a better position playing time wise with the Bucs and you would think monetarily as well with all the money the Bucs are throwing at free agents ($6mil to Dunn?)... Plus, the 49ers already have: Isaac Bruce, Darrell Jackson, Arnaz Battle, Ashley Lelie and Jason Hill at Wide Receiver. He's gonna have to battle (as he has his entire career) three receivers for a spot, much less the ball. Compare that to the Bucs Corps: Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, ???????, ????????, and ????????.. None of our other options are better than Bryant Johnson and Johnson would have easily been the #2 receiver.. ah well. Here's to you staying healthy this season and being able to re-coup ...
