xujunji wrote a new blog post: Star-Ledger's look at 2009 NBA Free Agency If the NBA is an authentic reflection of society at large, this is the summer when consumers — we call them owners — are likely to start socking away their disposable income. The 2009 free-agent market opens tonight at midnight, and the vast majority of the 158 players looking for a fair wage will learn that ...
How does a Boozer trade impact 2010 free agency?
2009-07-10 12:54:00
Let's assume for a moment that the Bulls manage to pull off the three way trade for Boozer where they lose Tyrus and Hinrich and don't pick up any additional players whose contract extends into 2010.   How would this effect the Bulls future in regards to the mythical 2010 free agency group?...

Free Agency Picks Up
2009-02-12 23:05:00
Over the last 48 hours, a few of the top remaining free agents have found homes. It looks like Adam Dunn will be playing in D.C. for the next 2 seasons as he signed a two-year $20 million deal with the Nationals. Bobby Abreu also found a home, signing a bargain basement one-year, $5 million deal with the Angels. With those two back-up options off of the market, it would seem that the Dodgers need Manny Ramirez now more than ever. If they loose out on ManRam, they won't have a shot at legitimately replacing him. Whatever small percentage chance the Giants had at signing Manny Ramirez has likely gone out the window now under the current circumstances. The Dodgers are going to go all out for Manny and the Giants aren't going to be ready to compete with what they'll eventually offer. My guess is that Manny returns to LA for 3 years and $65 million within the next week or so. The Giants aren't likely to guarantee Manny anymore than one year, two years tops, but would probably be open...
Giants Active As Free Agency Begins
2008-11-17 22:36:00
The Giants made the first official signing of the MLB offseason which got underway Friday night. The team inked left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a 2-year deal, 8 million dollar deal on Monday. The 29 year-old went 1-1 with an impressive 3.33 era (1.77 away from Cincinnati) along with an impressive 80 strikeouts in 78 innings of work. Affeldt has really come into his own over the last 2 years, pitching his home games in 2 of the National Leagues toughest parks to pitch at (Colorado then Cincinnati), and is becoming one of the better left-handed set-up men in baseball. $4 million a year is a little steep for a reliever who isn't closing games but Affeldt has a rubber arm (former starter), is just entering his prime and in my opinion was the top lefty reliever available outside of only Brian Fuentes. The Giants also were in on Joe Beimel who has a combined 2.87 era over the last 3 seasons, but Affeldt is better at stranding runners than the former Dodger and can be used for more...
Free Agency Time!
2008-07-01 19:55:00
Today teams can start negotiating contracts with free agents. So there are plenty of rumors flying around.Baron DavisI really don't like the idea of BD opting out. It doesn't make sense financially, unless there's a sign-and-trade.Here are some numbers from a Ball Don't Lie post:Davis was due to make 17.8 million bucks next season, but faced with a stalemate with the Warriors over a contract extension, he's now left all of that on the table.Who cares about the extension now? Davis is 29 and despite past health issues, the big time 09-10 market might be better. Also, he's getting to that age where he probably wants to be with more of a real time contender (Clippers, stay away!).He should have focused on playing this year, get almost 18 mil (not too shabby) and worry about getting a raise next summer. I hope this isn't about a raise. If I'm a GM, this guy isn't worth any more than that. Let's say he wants a three year deal that would net him just as much, if not more, per ye...

Pavano starting to throw off a mound as free agency looms
2008-05-30 15:12:00
Righthander Carl Pavano, rehabbing from Tommy John surgery last year, has been throwing off a half-mound since last week and could be ready to throw off a mound next week. The $39.95 million bust of the New York Yankees has made just two starts since June 2005, and it is unlikely that he will be ready to contribute to this year's team before becoming a free agent this winter.
Packers admit they're not big on free agency?
2008-05-28 12:54:00
The story in the Green Bay Press-Gazette is about running back Ryan Grant's contract negotiations with the Packers, but the bigger story may be Green Bay admitting that they're not big spenders in the unrestricted free agency.Grant's agent Alan Herman spoke to the Press-Gazette regarding how the Packers like to do business in the NFL."The important issue is the club has indicated they're not big players in the free-agent market and they like to take care of their own," told the Press-Gazette. "Ryan had truly an extraordinary year and it wasn't like he was a flash in the pan. He played 12 games, that's a lot of games, at the highest level. Clearly, they know what they have and that's why the opportunity to get something done and keep him there for a long time is kind of apparent."General manager Ted Thompson showed his biggest willingness to be a spender in free agency before the 2006 season when he signed Ryan Pickett, Charles Woodson and Marquand Manuel all to lucrative cont...
Clement in AAA for a Reason [Updated]
2008-04-29 06:51:00
GM Bill Bavasi may have had us all fooled.  We’ve all been sitting around debating why the hell Jeff Clement hadn’t been called up, but Bavasi might have been just doing his job.  How this slipped past everyone I will never know, but a Seattle based radio program was reporting that by leaving Clement in the minor leagues until May 8th it ...

Bryan Corey Chooses Free Agency
2008-04-17 17:24:00
Nothing earth-shattering here...recently designated Boston pitcher Bryan Corey has opted for free agency. Who wants a 34 year-old journeyman?  A month ago, the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo noted that the Orioles were scouting him.  A return to Japan may be another option.
Darrell Jackson Signs with Denver Broncos
2008-04-16 22:29:00
Wide receiver Darell Jackson has agreed to a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos, pending a physical. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Jackson will compete with Keary Colbert for the #2 wide receiver position (and likely win it). He’s the third free agent WR the Broncos have signed this ...
Darrell Jackson deal today?
2008-04-16 09:23:00
According to the Denver Post, a deal for Darrell Jackson is imminent, possibly even being signed today. Like most everyone else, the Samie Parker signing doesn’t do much for me. To be sure, his numbers were somewhat depressed by the abyss that was KC’s offense last season, but they’ve had a long history of having crappy ...
Denver Broncos Sign Punter Danny Baugher
2008-04-16 00:28:00

Denver had offered Elam a 3 year, $7 million dollar deal (notably worth ...

Broncos Close to Landing Wiegmann?
2008-03-19 21:04:00
Casey Wiegmann, former center for the Jets, Colts, Bears, and Chiefs (most recently), is close to signing with the Broncos per a league source. [Pro Football Talk] At 34 years old, Wiegmann would be adding depth to the Broncos line, particularly with the recent departure of G/C Chris Myers. I’d rather pass, but it ...

San Francisco 49ers sign last of decent WR's on Free Agency Market
2008-03-15 00:18:00
...UPDATE... The 49ers have released Veteran WR Darrell Jackson... Pro Football Talk lists the Bucs as a possible destination. At this point, why not? Bring in a cagillion players at one position and see who sticks. The 49ers have signed WR Bryant Johnson to a 1 Year deal, wow, one year? That's pretty sad. He clearly had a better position playing time wise with the Bucs and you would think monetarily as well with all the money the Bucs are throwing at free agents ($6mil to Dunn?)... Plus, the 49ers already have: Isaac Bruce, Darrell Jackson, Arnaz Battle, Ashley Lelie and Jason Hill at Wide Receiver. He's gonna have to battle (as he has his entire career) three receivers for a spot, much less the ball. Compare that to the Bucs Corps: Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, ???????, ????????, and ????????.. None of our other options are better than Bryant Johnson and Johnson would have easily been the #2 receiver.. ah well. Here's to you staying healthy this season and being able to re-coup ...

The Latest in Buffalo Bills Free Agency
2008-03-13 23:54:00
Whew. Good discussion going on today, folks - it's been a whirlwind and a whole lot of fun to see y'all chatting it up. Good day to be a Rumbler indeed. Here's the latest on what's happening with our Buffalo Bills as far as free agency goes: First, an update on WR Bryant "Panda" Johnson - his agent says that he's got three offers and will sign one of them within the next couple of days. The prevailing thought is that two of those deals are one-year offers, and the third is a multi-year offer. That multi-year offer is apparently the Bills' offer. Stay tuned - I've certainly said this before, but we may actually be heading toward a resolution of Panda Watch. As a continuation of The Great DE Debate, the Detroit Lions released veteran Kalimba Edwards today. Edwards was a situational pass rusher in Detroit (under Dick Jauron, no less) and still has enough speed to be a solid fourth defensive end in Buffalo. Personally, I feel he'd be a good investment on a two-ye...
So, Why Are We Not Pursuing D.J. Hackett?

Jacksonville Jaguars Free Agency/Draft Update
2008-03-06 17:39:00
I don't think anything I write here can possibly top the Jason Taylor story, but here goes. Brett Favre Press Conference:Just in case you're interested...Click here to see Favre's press conference streamed live. What do we know? The Jaguars Will Not resign DT Grady Jackson.  This must mean that the Jaguars are happy with what they have at Defensive Tackle and feel that they don't need him as a backup big guy.  I liked the way he played in Jacksonville, and I loved how small his jersey numbers looked on him.  I'm going to take a leap of faith and assume that there's a reason why the team wouldn't keep him around.  If not, there's gonna be hell to pay.   Jacksonville made three HUGE signings on Wednesday.  By huge, I mean huge camp fodder at best.  OT Pete McMahon, OT Ryan Gibbons and Long Snapper Brett Goode were all signed by the Jaguars.  All three have been with the team before, all three have been cut by the team before.  T...
The Very Latest in Free Agency: Buffalo Style
2008-03-06 00:51:00
Over the past three days, five free agents have met with the Buffalo Bills. As of the time of this posting, none of those free agents have signed any dotted lines with the team. That's not necessarily bad news - there still seems like there's a good chance that any (most?) of these players could be members of the Bills by week's end. For organizational purposes and further discussion, here's the very latest that we know about those five players: Cardinals UFA WR Bryant Johnson: Clearly, this is the name that has been speculated about most. Johnson visited the Bills on Monday, where in an interview with the team claimed to have a visit scheduled with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins have since denied having a scheduled visit from Johnson. We have not heard anything for about 48 hours, other than ESPN's John Clayton reporting that the two sides were still negotiating as of this morning. The problem with getting Johnson (who wants to be a Bill) on board is the contrac...
Walker Deal Worst Ever?
2008-03-05 23:51:00
The aftermath of the Javon Walker six-year deal is making the rounds of the Internet, and the consensus is clear - this deal is easily the worst signing by a team in the past 5 years - and possibly ever. “Tommy Kelly looks like a bargain now. Javon Walker’s six-year, $55 million contract, with $27 million ...
What can we learn from Free Agency: What's obvious really isn't...
2008-03-05 23:15:00
Shaun Rogers: Recipe for Disaster? [editor's note, by River City Rage]: Big Cat Country favorite NASF is writing a series for us about Free Agency and other issues. This is his first contribution, and we look forward to more! What can we learn from the history of free agency. A great indicator of future success and failure is taking a look back on history. A lot can be gathered from studying the trends that result in hitting the jackpot with a free agent, or coming up snake eyes. By no means is talent evaluation  and predicating the impact of a free agent an exact science. What we can do is look at what gives us the best odds for success, and the best bang for our buck. When I analyzed all 32 teams from last years free agency, I came away with a clear formula for why certain free agents were successful, and why others failed. The formula for success was with players who played at a high level for more than one year, were young and ascending, and had good characte...
A deeper look at the first week of NFL free agency
2008-03-05 20:05:00
Since free agency began at midnight last Friday, the signings have come at a furious pace. Some teams, like Oakland, the New York Jets, and Miami, have been extremely active. Others, like New England, Indianapolis, and the New York Giants, have decided against being an active member in the free agency market. This off season's Patriots?Last off season, the New England Patriots were making the most of the free agency market, signing WR Donte' Stallworth, LB Adalius Thomas, and trading for WRs Wes Welker and Randy Moss. This off season, the Cleveland Browns are trying to duplicate the Pats' strategy, hoping a Super Bowl appearance will reward their efforts. They gave out over $67 million in guaranteed money to five players. The Brown re-signed QB Derek Anderson and RB Jamal Lewis. They traded for DTs Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers. They also added receiving help in the form of WR Donte' Stallworth. The trades for Williams (2nd round pick) and Rogers (3rd), along with last year's tr...

In The Red Zone: Free Agency Day 5
2008-03-05 04:25:00
Unless it relates to the Patriots this will be the last recap of the NFL free agency. All the major players are pretty much signed, sealed and delivered. It took less than five days. Needless to say the pickings were mostly slim. A pair of sure fire Hall of Famers retired from the NFL today. Green Bay QB Brett Favre, the only three-time league MVP, walks away after 17 seasons with the historic franchise. In addition to the MVP’s Favre won Super Bowl XXXI when the Packers beat the Patriots and he was on the losing side the following year in Super Bowl XXXII when the Denver Broncos won their first title. I wonder what Aaron Rodgers is feeling right now? Oakland Raiders DT Warren Sapp also retired today after 13 NFL seasons. Sapp spent most of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was a member of the team that won Super Bowl XXXVII over the Raiders in Jon Gruden’s first season in Tampa. Sapp also was named to 7 Pro Bowls. The funniest part in all of this is that Sapp...
