The Cubs Need to Sign the #1 Free Agent This Winter
2009-09-07 04:56:00
Fresh off of a great weekend in Las Vegas with my wife I am back to working the phones and looking at what the Cubs can or might do this winter to overhaul their very disappointing team. That means every area of the team and the organization is under review with new ownership taking over after the World Series. The best first move the Ricketts Family could make would be to hire Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa and pitching coach Dave Duncan for the Cubs. Both men will be free agents this off-season There are some solid players available in free agency but as a whole this year's crop of free agents is not particularly strong. However, there is one bona fide...
Free Agent Forward Ike Diogu Signed by New Orleans Hornets
2009-07-30 20:56:00
Ike Diogu in Hornets uniform photoshopped by user "iDunk"at the InsideHoops.com Forum. After the recent Emeka Okafor-Tyson Chandler trade the New Orleans Hornets did with the Charlotte Bobcats, they have added furthermore to their talented squad after adding free agent power forward Ike Diogu.Terms of the contract were not disclosed.Diogu played for the Indiana Pacers for most of his career, but before the 2008-09 NBA season started, he was traded to the Portland Trailblazers. He also played for the Sacramento Kings during that season as well. He averaged about four points and two rebounds per game last year. His last two games of the season with the Kings were very impressive, though, having 32 points in one game and 28 in the other.Diogu is very undersized for his position at power forward/center as he is 6'8".Here's what ESPN's John Hollinger says of him:Diogu is undersized for a power forward at 6-foot-8, and that combined with average mobility make him a liability at the defen...

Giants try to pick up a free agent receiver and other pre draft notes
2009-04-20 02:06:00
Giants try to pick up a free agent receiver and other pre draft notes It seems that the reports hold some truth at least: The Giants want to swing a deal with the Browns to get Braylon Edwards, who is another talented but "difficult" to work with receiver. Edwards may have some problems working with new Browns and Ex Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini, which seems to be the main issue right now. The Browns want a #2 and a #5 pick in this draft, plus receiver Steve Smith. The Giants countered with the two picks plus receiver Dominik Hixon. What some people are missing is that Edwards isn't Burress. He's two+ inches shorter and 15 pounds lighter. Can he play the same "Jump Ball in the End Zone" game? Sure he can. But if Hixon also goes in the deal the Giants would still need to get another "taller" wide out in the Draft or Via Free Agency to help stretch the defensive backs.I'll cast my vote for Brian Robiskie early, or Ramses Barden late. I prefer to see a team built through the draft...
Best Free Agent Signings of 2009: Russell Branyan

Best Free Agent Signings of 2009: Russell Branyan The Seattle Mariners December 3rd signing of Russell Branyan (one year contract at $1.4 million) kicks off this years edition of best free agent signings. Bedard Likely Staying Put
2008-07-18 19:18:00
With the Philadelphia Phillies acquisition of Joe Blanton the Seattle Mariners lost potentially their best suitor for ailing ace Erik Bedard’s services.  Bedard is currently on the 15-day DL and was delayed on returning to Seattle after the All-Star break, meaning he’ll only get a single start before the July 31st trade deadline if healthy.  Pair ...
Blanton to Phillies Deal Hurts M?s
2008-07-17 18:52:00
The Philadelphia Phillies overpaid for Joe Blanton today, hurting our Seattle Mariners. 1.) Billy Beane continues to build his Oakland A’s into a future dynasty from within, this trade following other trades of his that brought in truckloads of top-tiered talent (Rich Harden, Nick Swisher, Dan Haren, etc).  2.) Seattle will no longer be able to coax ...
More Talk About Trading Ichiro
2008-07-17 17:19:00
Seattle P-I’s Jim Moore is the latest local guy to write about the possibility of trading Ichiro Suzuki.  Unfortunately for us, ESPN has seemingly picked up on it, meaning we may not hear the end of it. There are more pressing issues at hand, but would dealing Ichiro really be such a bad idea?  Bad PR and ...
Rumors: Vidro, Bedard, Ibanez +
2008-07-15 14:42:00
A lot of us thought it absurd that Richie Sexson was let go before the even more useless Jose Vidro, but it seems order is slowly returning to the universe.  This from Prospect Insider’s sidebar: There are some rumors starting to swirl around the team as they left Kaufmann Stadium today that designated hitter Jose Vidro’s ...
Ibanez Drawing Interest [UPDATED]
2008-07-12 18:49:00
There are several Mariners whose names are going to pop up in trade rumors over the coarse of July, but Raul Ibanez is, in my opinion, one of the guys that will undoubtedly be wearing another team’s colors in August.  He’s still an RBI machine and is much more affordable compared to other potential rent-a-players. The ...
Phillies Holding Carrasco
2008-07-11 01:26:00
Recently I wrote that the if Erik Bedard was to be traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mariners would probably be targeting top pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco.  Since then I have heard other things of similar nature. ESPN’s Jayson Stark is reporting, however, that the Phillies wouldn’t include Carrasco in a potential deal for CC Sabbathia, so ...
Blackhawks and Predators Free Agent Needs
2008-06-30 01:08:00
Blackhawks: There have been rumblings about the Blackhawks' interest in adding pop to the lineup, with a puck-moving defenseman on their shopping list. They could go high, after Brian Campbell, or get a younger, less expensive option like John-Michael Liles. The plan is to continue letting a strong young talent base mature and to supplement it with compatible talent. Predators: Don't expect too

Free Agent Stock Watch: Ryan Dempster
2008-05-19 15:36:00
One player whose stock has risen in '08 is Cubs starter Ryan Dempster.  The 31 year-old hadn't started regularly since '03, but he currently sports a 5-1 record with a 2.35 ERA.  He's earning $5.5MM in the last year of a three-year extension. Part of Dempster's success can be attributed to his .211 BABIP, lowest in the league.  As a team the Cubs have a .277 BABIP, and something around there would be a more reasonable expectation moving forward.  On the plus side, Dempster's 55% groundball rate ranks seventh in the NL, and it's helped him keep the ball in the yard.  He has a solid strikeout rate and has been making improvements on a subpar walk rate. The Cubs have treated Dempster well, taking him on as a reclamation project and later giving him an extension at full market value.  Perhaps he'll choose to continue the relationship.  A three-year deal in the $30-35MM range seems fair.
Rosenthal Suggests Delgado for Sexson
2008-05-18 19:56:00
…in this video. It’s an interesting proposition.  Seattle has been interested in Carlos Delgado in the past, and his left handed bat would fit nicely into the lineup and Safeco Field, but I’m not sure such a deal would be in Seattle’s best interest.  While Delgado strikes out slightly less and is hitting for a better average, ...
Heyman's Best-Ever Free Agent Deals
2008-05-15 16:54:00
A few weeks ago Jon Heyman gave us his list of the worst-ever free agent signings, and you guys chimed in on what deals should have been included on the list. Heyman is back at it again. This time, he has his list of the 20 best free agent signings ever. Topping the list is the 1-year/$1.25MM deal given to David Ortiz back in 2003. I am not convinced that a 1-year deal deserves to be at the top of this list. So let's have it. Which deal would top your list? What deals not on the list, deserve to be included? Cork Gaines writes for Rays Index and can be reached here.
More Money, Less Talent for Junior?
2008-05-15 01:32:00
It appears that the Seattle Mariners have no problem taking on Ken Griffey’s salary or next year’s option, meaning Cincinnati wouldn’t be on the hook for any of it.  To me, this is a good thing.  If Seattle required Cincinnati to eat some of his contract, then high caliber prospects would have to be offered up ...

Free Agent Stock Watch: Joe Crede
2008-05-14 00:14:00
White Sox third baseman Joe Crede hopes to stay in Chicago beyond 2008.  He's willing to have his agent, Scott Boras, negotiate in-season with the Sox - but only if the team approaches him.  Crede will still listen to the Sox after the season, but he'll be on the open market after the exclusive negotiation period expires. Will the Sox offer Crede arbitration?  The possibility that he accepts and they have him for '09 seems a risk worth taking.  Crede would probably be a Type B free agent, and he'd likely decline arbitration in hopes of a multiyear deal. It's a weak free agent market for third basemen.  The closest guy to a regular besides Crede is Casey Blake, and he's having a lousy year.  Boras should ask for more than three years and $25MM, since that's what Melvin Mora is earning.  Mike Lowell's three years and $37.5MM seems too much.  The Indians, Twins, Angels, Brewers, Dodgers, and Giants could be suitors.
Cinci About to Make a Move
2008-05-12 23:54:00
This is total speculation, but interesting nonetheless.  Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker told the media that super prospect Jay Bruce would be recalled soon.  If Bruce is called up to the big club then someone must be on their way out.  This could mean that Cinci is about to trade one of their outfielders (most likely ...
Free Agent Stock Watch: Milton Bradley
2008-05-12 23:51:00
In December, Milton Bradley signed a one-year deal with the Rangers for $5.25MM guaranteed.  He can earn up to $2.75MM more based on playing time incentives.  The Padres didn't offer him arbitration; they were afraid of a possible award nearing $10MM.  Bradley was available at an affordable price and term mainly because of his injury history - he hasn't played 100 games in a season since 2004.  His '07 season ended with an ACL tear in a bizarre incident (his manager tackled him to keep him away from an umpire who had provoked him).  That Bradley was ready for Opening Day was remarkable. Since Bradley was traded to the Padres on June 29th of last year, he's been an elite hitter: a .981 OPS in 263 at-bats.  In that period his OBP ranks 7th in the game (.419) and his SLG ranks 15th (.563).  Bradley could be called the Rich Harden of hitters - oft-injured, but elite when he plays.  Bradley might be a hot trade commodity this July.  He wo...
M?s Watching Griffey [UPDATED]
2008-05-12 19:26:00
No more speculation; the Seattle Mariners indeed have their eye on Ken Griffey Jr.  Seattle is the worst team in the American League right now, so it will be interesting to see this unfold.  I’m not so sure that Griffey would accept a trade to Seattle at this point, but we’ll see.  I wrote about the Griffey-to-Seattle scenario ...

Daniel Pink, THE ADVENTURES OF JOHNNY BUNKO, FREE AGENT NATION author: Mr.

That more of us will be working for ourselves in the future.Well, it?s now the future, so I?ll ask him whether that came true.He also wrote A Whole New Mind, about the the move from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age.But Dan?s newest book may be his greatest leap yet: a manga-style graphic novel titled The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You?ll Ever Need. Phillies could target free-agent Cashman
2008-05-05 23:54:00
If the New York Yankees miss the playoffs, GM Brian Cashman's decision to back off on the club's pursuit of Johan Santana and go young will surely agitate Hank Steinbrenner, who has already made rumblings to that effect. Cashman is in the final year of his contract and missing the playoffs could surely result in a change of GMs.Cashman had previous expressed interest in the Philadelphia Phillies' GM job, and it just so happens that the man in that post, Pat Gillic, will retire in the fall. A possible match, yes, but it would take a collapse in both cities to make a marriage likely.
Jacque Jones?
2008-05-05 22:44:00
Detroit outfielder Jacque Jones was released today.  He hits left-handed and is a good defensive player, though has misplaced his power since hitting 27 homers in 2006. Should Jones be on Seattle’s radar?  He may be, as they tried to get him last time he was a free agent, and he almost fits the bill of what they should ...
Free Agent Stock Watch: Jason Varitek
2008-05-03 12:56:00
Oh no! It's a Yankees blogger talking about the Red Sox! He's gonna be all biased and junk! While I'm sure I'll get some of that in the comments, I think talking about Jason Varitek's impending free agency is a worthy topic for this slow Saturday. So, what are we looking at for the 36-year-old backstop? You know where I'm going with this. After the 2007 season, a 36-year-old Jorge Posada signed a four-year, $52.4MM contract. This was on the heels of Posada's best season, .338/.426/.543. Can we expect something similar for Varitek, who will turn 37 at the beginning of the 2009 season? The short answer: no. I understand that Varitek means a lot to the Red Sox as a team. But does that really justify giving him a four-year deal? In my opinion, no. Then again, Varitek is the same season-age as Jorge, so maybe he'll be looking for a three-year deal. But even then, do the Red Sox want to match Jorge's yearly salary of $13.1MM? Red Sox fans might kill me, but once again I have to s...
Free Agent Stock Watch: Rafael Furcal
2008-05-02 12:33:00
Indicators predicting a big year for Rafael Furcal included his impending free agency, a return to health, and a strong Spring Training performance.  After 28 games, he sits at .371/.459/.586 (tops among shortstops). When Furcal first reached free agency after the 2005 season, he was only 28 and was coming off a .284/.348/.429 season.  He chose to maximize his yearly salary rather than take a four or five-year deal.  The three-year, $39MM contract Furcal signed with the Dodgers allows him to re-enter free agency at age 31. Furcal is in line for a monster contract even if he can't maintain his MVP performance.  Jimmy Rollins is signed at a well below-market price, so he's a poor comparable.  The high-end comp is Derek Jeter, who gave up nine free agent years for a bit less than $20MM per season.  Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, could reasonably ask for $75MM over five years. Furcal and the Dodgers are open to a midseason extension, according to Ken Rosen...

Free Agent Stock Watch: Mark Ellis
2008-04-30 13:43:00
A's second baseman Mark Ellis might be the affordable alternative to Orlando Hudson next winter.  In September of last year, the A's chose to exercise Ellis' $5MM option for '08. Ellis, 30, was ranked as the fourth-best defensive second baseman by the Fielding Bible's panel of experts, behind Aaron Hill, Hudson, and Brandon Phillips.  The market might undervalue second base defense - Baseball Prospectus' PECOTA projection system values Ellis at about $30MM over the 2009-11 seasons.  He seems unlikely to become a $10MM a year player. Ellis also has offensive value.  He's good for a .330 OBP and .400 SLG, which is at least league average for the position.  And he is capable of more power, having hit 19 home runs last year. Ellis seems likely to snag a contract of three years at $6-7MM per season. Sure beats Hudson's asking price.  Ellis just missed Type A classification last winter; I think he'll reach it this time (here's a refresher on the sta...
