Recent Anomalies in U.S. Stock Markets - Proof of Free Market Intervention
2008-05-12 03:06:00
May 11, 2008 In Part I of this two-part article, ?Has Executive Order 12631 Effectively Ended the Era of Free Markets?? I discussed publicly made statements by various officials of the U.S. Federal Reserve that indicated they would resort to free market intervention and manipulation ?if necessary?. Since many of those statements have been made, ...
IMF also backing free market solutions.

(Shorack, guest blogger from Belgium) John Lipsky, one of the heads of the IMF made some statements today concerning inflation and more specific, the price increase of food. He criticized governments who put in place protectionist measures since they only prevent the markets from adapting to the new reality. But some very interesting statements did involve bio-fuel. The Truth About ?Big Oil?, Democrats and Environmentalism
2008-04-02 12:00:00
Barack Obama’s new ad drags out the usual Democrat boogeyman, “Big Oil.” He says since the ’70s gas crisis, the only thing that has changed is that “Exxon is making $40 billion a year and we are paying $3.50 for gas.” Barack says “Big Oil” will pay a penalty for “windfall profits.” So what are “windfall profits?” It’s a term that is thrown around quite a bit by liberals and I want to make sure everyone understands what they are talking about. A “windfall profit” is defined as: An unexpected profit arising from causes not controlled by the recipient. profit that occurs unexpectedly as a consequence of some event not controlled by those who profit from it By definition, “Big Oil” has nothing to do with the profits they are currently enjoying, but they are being vilified for them. But oil companies don’t set the price. That is determined by the futures market. Oil is...

Bear Stearns and the Free Market
2008-03-20 01:14:00
The recent government-sponsored bailout of Bear Stearns, one of the top five lenders in the United States, has shocked traders and left investors cold. Despite the chilly reaction on Wall Street, secretly many are breathing a sigh of relief. While Bear Stearns was mismanaged from its upper echelons, its subprime exposure grew until their recent $30 billion-plus losses had to be reported. Once that happened, their course took a turn for the worse. As their ability to shore up capital faltered, JPMorgan Chase stepped in with a buyout worth a bargain $2 a share, valuing a company worth $3.5 billion down to $236 million. Quite a savvy deal, if obviously designed to ensure continued security in the market more than pure profit (after last year's hedge funds collapses, Bear Stearn's lawyers have been busy with sub-prime exposure-related litigation). With the impact of derivative investments and more sophisticated financial instruments, the notational impact of a Bear Stearns collapse c...

More On the Obama Doubletalk on NAFTA
2008-03-03 19:12:00
On the podcast, we talked about a report that Obama denies, detailing how he is telling the American people one thing and the Canadian government the other. Well, now a memo has emerged that shows he is, in fact, telling the American voter what he thinks they want to hear with no intention whatsoever of actually doing it: The memo is the first documentation to emerge publicly out of the meeting between the adviser, Austan Goolsbee, and officials with the Canadian consulate in Chicago, but Goolsbee said it misinterprets what he told them. The memo was written by Joseph DeMora, who works for the consulate and attended the meeting. Goolsbee disputed a section that read: “Noting anxiety among many U.S. domestic audiences about the U.S. economic outlook, Goolsbee candidly acknowledged the protectionist sentiment that has emerged, particularly in the Midwest, during the primary campaign. He cautioned that this messaging should not be taken out of context and should be viewed as mo...
Unlocked: Education Revolt in Watts
2008-02-19 10:27:00
Vikki Reyes has had it with Locke High, the school her daughters attend in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. She walked in on class one day and recalls ?the place was just like a zoo!? Students had taken control, while the teacher sat quietly with a book. Frank Wells has also had it with Locke High. When he became principal he says gangs ruled the campus. He tried to turn things around but ran into a ?brick wall? of resistance from the school district and teachers union. Locke seemed destined to languish in high crime and low test scores until Wells, Reyes, and many reform-minded teachers joined with a maverick named Steve Barr in an attempt to break free from the status quo. Their battle is just one example of the charter school education revolt that?s erupting across the nation. ShareThis
Liberty Means a Faith in God

Free Market Morality (Great Video Lecture/Documentary)
2008-01-23 16:37:00
We understand consumerism. Our powerful market-driven economy is based on an assessment of the worth of our treasure, time, and talent. But we place value on more than material items: we also make value judgments on ethical choices regarding life decisions from marijuana use to abortions. What makes the things in our lives so valuable, and what can be sacrificed for a greater good? http://video.google.com/videopl-ay?docid=-3520017904048168988 Philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and economists like Adam Smith have advanced several important theses on the nature of valuation, though always restricted to their chosen field. This paper will offer groundbreaking insights into a new environment of ethical supply and demand and create a new theory of free-market morality. It examines critical issues, such as whether actions have a priori worth, the plausibility and necessity of arbitrary value judgments, and an economic-existentialist method that most humans apply without realization...

Charity & The Free Market
2008-01-01 16:35:00
The implementation of charity is changing. Once content to simply write a check, companies and foundations are beginning to take a far more hands on approach, often using market driven forces and techniques. The Clinton Foundation greatly contributed to the fight against AIDS in Africa, not through a hefty donation, but by arranging financing and contracts for low cost pharmaceutical manufacturers in India and South Africa. Micro-loans are all the rage and charities are being assessed just as companies would be--for efficiency and results. It’s too soon to say whether this new approach to giving will prove a boon to those in need, but considering initial results, it seems likely.
Harry Reid Blames Everyone but Himself and the Massive Government
2007-12-19 13:26:00
Harry Reid has been a complete failure as Senate Majority Leader. Everything the Dems have tried to push in the Senate has been blocked by Republicans. He wants the American people to see this not as a battle of free market v. socialism, but of the Republicans and big business against the American people. See, for a liberal like Harry Reid, big business is evil. They take advantage of the people of America and rip them off. He sees the failure of the Democrats in this last year not as a win for Republicans. No, that would not do. He, as a good liberal, has to continue to pimp the class warfare card. “Who’s winning?” Reid asked a group of reporters. “Big Oil, Big Tobacco. … The American people are losing.” See, if the people hear the terms Big Oil and Big Tobacco, they see fat cat suits lighting cigars with $100 bills, laughing at the common man who they are taking advantage of. And this can lessen the impact of being a failure, because it d...

Conservative Views on Freedom, Religion, and The Free Market
2007-12-07 20:36:00
I’ve already posted my reaction to Mitt Romney’s speech and noted how a Washington Post editorial, as well as a liberal columnist, shared my disagreement with Romney’s statement that “Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom.” It should be noted that some conservatives have raised the same objection. For example, Peggy Noonan wrote: There was one ...
Scams, Scandals and Downright Stupidity: The Fraud, Waste and Abuse of the
2007-12-05 13:00:00
There is a combination in Washington that draws fraud, waste and abuse like bees to honey. The combination is free money plus government bureaucracy. The federal farm subsidy program has created some stories that are as unbelievable as they are outrageous. Your Government at Work As we discussed in part two of this series, farm subsidies encourage overproduction because farmers are paid by the amount of crop produced. So while the system is unintentionally increasing the number of acres being planted, it is also paying farmers not to plant. The government spends around $2 billion a year for fields to remain empty: Such fields cover about 5 million acres of North and South Dakota. Nationwide, there are 34 million acres in the conservation reserve, an area equal to about 7 percent of U.S. land that’s planted in crops. That’s an area bigger than the state of New York. That was in 2005. The Heritage Foundation puts the number of acres left empty at around 40 million now...

Medicare Dollars v. the Free Market
2007-11-30 20:44:00
Remember the brilliant words of P.J. O’Rourke: “If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it costs when it’s free.” : Medicare spends billions of dollars each year on products and services that are available at far lower prices from retail pharmacies and online stores, according to an analysis of federal data by The New York Times. The government agency has paid above-market costs for dozens of items, a comparison of Medicare figures with retail catalogs finds. For example, last year Medicare spent more than $21 million on pumps to help older and disabled men attain erections, paying about $450 for the same device that is available online for as little as $108. Even for a simple walking cane, which can be purchased online for about $11, the government pays $20, according to government data. These widespread price discrepancies, including those for oxygen services, have been noted in dozens of regulatory reports. The oxygen services...

Corn Prices High?Government Passes Subsidies for Corn

Free Market Starvation
2007-09-21 11:28:00
The power of capitalist propaganda is immense. According to the ruling class media, the only system that starves anyone anymore is Communism. One hears this platitude over and over - Communism = starvation. It is true that 600,000 have starved to death in North Korea since the 1990's. However, 14 million starve to death every year in the world - mostly in South Asia but also 1 million in Latin America - almost all under capitalist regimes. Not one word of this from the ruling class mouthpieces. This has been going since at least 1986 (when the figure was calculated) with no end in sight. The Soviet Union and China are now synonymous with starvation. There was a famine in the Ukraine in 1932 that killed 1.5 million people. Previously, during the Russian Civil War, there was a famine in 1921 that killed 9 million people. It is a simple truth that under Czardom, the peasant never had enough to eat. His life expectancy was a mere 32 years and lack of food played a role here.Under Commun...
The Shocking Side of Free Market
2007-09-20 02:36:00
Naomi Klein 's new book, The Shock Doctrine, details the rise of disaster capitalism with painstaking care, showing how big business often steps in after global misery - a detailed analysis of how corporations manipulate natural and manmade disasters to line their pockets and further their privatizing agenda, is not a marginal, academic treatise by a lefty think tank targeted at a small, like-minded audience. She blames Milton Friedman's "Chicago School" of economists for harming many nations they set out to help. Klein traces the doctrine of economic and military violence back more than half a century in which the desire for profit and power have propelled evil geniuses to use the world’s poor as their lab rats, from Latin America to Africa, the Arab world and the former Soviet Union.Aftermath of shock doctrineDiscussion: Questioning the BOX called "free market"
