John McCain 2008 Web Ad: "Colombia Free Trade"ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign released a web video, called "Colombia Free Trade," focusing on John McCain's support for opening markets to American goods and the Colombian Free Trade Agreement that will create jobs here at home.English transcript For "Colombia Free Trade" (Web :30)JOHN MCCAIN: To fuel our economy, we must create more jobs for Americans and for our neighbors to the south. With better jobs, more of them will be able to stay in their country. We can't go back on our word on free trade promises with Mexico, Canada, Central America or anyone else.We must encourage more trade agreements to create more jobs on both sides of the border; that's why I'm behind the Colombian Free Trade Agreement.I'm John McCain and I approved this message.Spanish transcript For "Colombia Free Trade" (Web :30)JOHN MCCAIN: Para impulsar nuestra economia, tenemos que generar mas empleos para los estadounidenses...
Sowing More Big Government with the Farm Bill, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-06-02 07:00:00
Recently Congress sent the latest Farm Bill to the president. The bill features brand new federal programs, expansion of existing subsidies, more food stamps and more foreign food aid. This bill hits the taxpayer hard, while at the same time ensuring food prices will remain elevated. The president vetoed the bill, citing concerns over its costs and subsidies for the wealthy in a time of high food prices and record farm income. Nevertheless, this over-reaching, government-expanding Farm Bill will soon be law. The truth is most farmers simply want honest pay for honest work. However, if the government is providing competing farms with advantages, and one wants to remain a farmer, one must seek a proportional advantage from government. It is a difficult position for the farmer. Some are better at qualifying for taxpayers? largesse than others as evidenced by the fact that more than 60% of the subsidies go to just 10% of recipients, edging out the small family farm. This entir...
Another "Triumph" Of "Free" Trade

As noted here, Dubya met today with Guatemalan president Alvaro Colom and of course praised the president of that nation for implementing “reforms.”And as noted here from the White House site (a repository of lies if one ever existed), President Highest Disapproval Rating In Gallup Poll History said…We've had a good discussion about a variety of issues. We discussed bilateral relations between Guatemala and the United States, which are very strong. We are friends. We treat each other with respect. Our objective with U.S. foreign policy is to have a neighborhood that is peaceful and prosperous, where social justice is important; want to achieve social justice through good health policy, good education policy, good judicial policy. The United States is pleased to help this government as best as we possibly can help the average citizen get a good education and have good health care.I’m not sure I have the time to refute that paragraph as thoroughly as I should, but I don’t k...

the mind is a muscle. if you don't exercise it, it gets weaker. towards the goal of exercising my mind, I decided to tackle the debate on free trade - is it good or bad?in an attempt to understand the issues involved, I must have read like 30+ articles on the subject that I found via a google search.I understand the idea behind free trade. that trade in itself has been proven to reduce poverty around the world. (?) that free trade maximizes efficiency of markets.many interesting reads... check out the following info on free trade.http://www.pollingreport.-com/trade.htmhttp://rwor.org/a/-v21/1030-039/1033/china.htmthe- lasting impression that I got from all the readings is - nobody really knows if free trade is good or bad. so many examples of behavior contradictory to the policy can be found which go against what should have happened.in the 1990's malaysia implemented currency controls which later were found to have prevented the country from entering a depression like period that ...

A Free Trade Apostate Speaks
2008-04-11 15:18:00
You could consider this as part of The Confessions of an Unapologetic Isolationist. A free trade apostate, if you will. As such, it saddens me to see the editorial board of the Washington Post climbing in bed with the Unfair Trade for America crowd. In their column, "Drop Dead Columbia" the editors take Nancy Pelosi to task for not immediately throwing open our trade doors to yet another country and laying out the red carpet for whatever will rush in - or more to the point, out - through that portal.THE YEAR 2008 may enter history as the time when the Democratic Party lost its way on trade. Already, the party's presidential candidates have engaged in an unseemly contest to adopt the most protectionist posture, suggesting that, if elected, they might pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement.Economically, it should be a no-brainer -- especially at a time of rising U.S. joblessness. At the moment, Colombian exports to the United States already enjoy preferences. The trade a...
Who Else is Against the Colombian Free Trade Agreement?
2008-04-11 04:35:00
Madam Speaker has plans to block the Colombian Free Trade Agreement: Defying the White House, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday the House will change its rules to avoid a required vote this year on a free-trade agreement with Colombia. Pelosi, D-Calif., said the change would remove the timetable that says Congress must take up trade bills within 90 legislative days after they are received from the White House. She intended to bring the rule proposal to the full House on Thursday. “The president took action” in submitting the deal Tuesday, she said. “I will take mine tomorrow.” The Colombia deal was a leading topic as President Bush and congressional leaders discussed the economy and other issues at the White House Wednesday afternoon. Pelosi, emerging from the meeting, said their message to the president was that the main concern must be the living standards of Americans and they could not consider the free trade pact “unless we address the econ...
Free trade or death?
2008-04-08 08:33:00
Bush challenges Congress on free trade pact - CNN.com "Many Democrats continue to have serious concerns about an agreement that creates the highest level of economic integration with a country where workers and their families are routinely murdered and subjected to violence and intimidation for seeking to exercise their most basic economic rights. And the perpetrators of the violence have near total impunity,"Here's the deal. I believe in free trade. I know that's not exactly the liberal mindset, but I believe the US has to learn to compete in a global market, or it will simply be replaced in the global market. We can not continue to believe that we are the only superpower in the world, and that everyone needs our goods and services. Especially when you consider the ridiculous trade deficit we have gotten ourselves into. Now, I'll also admit that the big trade deficit is in part due to poorly planned free trade. It seems to me that in order to compete with some of the other ...
Again Getting Played on "Free" Trade
2008-04-02 00:40:00
This Op-Ed column in last Saturday?s New York Times by Edward Schumacher-Matos argued in favor of a free trade agreement with Colombia, and I should tell you from the start that I oppose free trade agreements since they have never provided worker safeguards and I have yet to see such agreements generating reasonably well-paying jobs with respectable benefits in this country (if someone can make that case to me, feel free to try ? I?m sorry, but with our economy in the tank, I?m not terribly concerned about generating jobs anywhere else in the world). The author stakes his claim based on the following? All sides agree that trade-union murders in Colombia, like all violence, have declined drastically in recent years. The Colombian unions? own research center says killings dropped to 39 last year from a high of 275 in 1996.Yet in a report being released next week, the research center says the killings remain ?systematic? and should be treated by the courts as ?genocide? designed to ?exte...
Indonesian govt to issue implementing regulations for Free Trade Zones
2008-03-18 00:38:00
The Indonesian government is set to issue the implementing regulations for its Free Trade Zone of Batam, Bintan and Karimun which are being jointly developed with neighbouring Singapore. The set of regulations - to be signed by the Indonesian president - will include, among other things, the most controversial issue of workers' minimum wage.Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, Indonesia's Trade Minister Mari Pangetsu said the government will ensure labour regulations within the Free Trade Zones are conducive to attract foreign investors. It is almost two years since Indonesia and Singapore agreed to jointly develop Free Trade Zones in the Indonesian islands of Batam, Bintan and Karium, located near Singapore. All the necessary laws have been passed by the Indonesian parliament. All that remains is for the Indonesian president to endorse the implementing regulations.Ms Mari said, "The most important thing now is to have the implementing regulations in place, get these institutions set up and ...

Delicious. So How's That "Free Trade" Working Out For You?
2008-03-01 19:04:00
This just in from the Department of Double Standards. The BBC reports that a massive contract to construct new KC-45A tanker planes has not been awarded to Boeing. And if you only read the lede, you might think that the contract had been awarded to Airbus in Europe. In fact, it was awarded to US defense contractor Northrop Grumman who will assemble the planes in the United States, but they constructed the bid using a consortium of global providers including Airbus. A similar situation arose here in New York recently when Lockheed Martin was awarded the bid for new "Marine One" presidential helicopters using a similar bid, with many key parts being manufactured in Italy. So, how dare the US Government make such a decision? General Arthur Lichte of the Air Force offered an explanation."More passengers, more cargo, more fuel to offload, more patients that we can carry, more availability, more flexibility and more dependability," he said. Those bastards! How dare they select a bid that wa...

Humanitarian Implications of Free Trade Agreements
2008-02-25 18:02:00
Free trade agreements such as NAFTA are lightning rods for political debate. Food aid to disadvantaged countries often comes in the form of American-grown crops, which are subsidized by the government and help support American farmers. However, many argue that the best way to aid struggling nations is to purchase their own crops and trade them on the free market. Are handouts the best solution to world hunger, or is cultivating agricultural trade in third world countries a better solution?
The '08 Election and Free Trade
2008-02-23 13:25:00
The Presidential candidates for the 2008 election are setting records for primary voter turnout and, especially in the Democratic wing, trying hard to differentiate themselves to discouraged voters with a myriad of sound-byte barrages. Whether the Democratic candidate chosen to run for President is Illinois Senator Barack Obama or New York Senator Hillary Clinton, we have before us a race that has been characterized by clashes over issues ranging from Iraq to the faltering economy, with recent heavy emphasis on the latter. As early as two months ago, Americans were content to let the candidates duke it out on a variety of issues without undue pressure towards any particular topic. However, as the Republican race began to break down last month (and the Democratic candidates began to look more like a room of yes-men on many issues like health care and the Iraq war), the field has narrowed and so has the focus. A potent combination of plummeting consumer confidence, high commodity pric...
Obama's Populism versus McCain's Free Trade
2008-02-22 19:25:00
by Walter C. Uhler In the wake of their recent presidential primary victories in Wisconsin, Barack Obama and John McCain appear destined to wage a fight for the office of President that not only will pit an advocate for "change" against a defender of many of George W. Bush's discredited policies (especially his war in Iraq and his tax cuts for the rich), but also pit a young, vibrant (perhaps cocky) 46 year old black upstart against a hot-headed, expletive-spewing war hero and old white man (previously disgraced as one of the Keating Five and now, perhaps, once again by revelations of past romantic ties with lobbyist Vicki Iseman, for whom he wrote letters to government regulators) who will be 72 years old by the time he's sworn into office. The election seems destined to become a choice between America's future and America's past. With this contest in mind, it seems appropriate to contrast Senator Obama's economic populism and Senator McCain's steadfast defense of...

What American Workers Deserve is Fair Trade, not Free Trade
2008-01-10 01:14:00
by Richard Backus "Fair Trade" must be adopted as the trade policy of the U.S. for the sake of the survival of the U.S. working classes. If implemented correctly, it will result as well in an improvement of the living standard of workers throughout the world. This article will describe the deceptive and false premises used as an explanation of the need and justification for Globalization. The real motivation is an even more intensive exploitation of workers and resources worldwide. "Fair Trade" needs to be accepted worldwide as the only suitable and equitable means of sustaining a high standard of living in the U.S., as well as an improvement in living standards worldwide. I will end the article with some of the changes in trade policy necessary to implement "Fair Trade". The theory of `Globalization` is based upon the premise that there are three practices which are necessary to ensure optimal worldwide trade. They consist of `free trade(the trading ...

Malaysia and USA in Free Trade ? Don't be the latest Victim
2007-11-27 05:22:00
Recently I read in the news about Malaysia and USA about to make an agreement about Free Trade, and people who are unaware of the implications of this agreement, they think that Malaysia is going to prosper by trading with USA.To be brief, I just want people to open their eyes to the reality of this ' Free Trade ' USA is spreading across the globe and what it brings to a nation.Today, America's economy is dwindling much faster than in the past century. It has been into war with someone or the other since the end of WW II. The 'Project for new American Century' talks about how America should control the world economy and world markets as well as natural resources, mainly oil to be able to retain its super power status as well as 'rule the world', in their report which was released much before 911 ever happened, they mentioned about needing another 'pearl harbor' like event so that they can go ahead with their plans, and 911 happened right at the time they needed it ! and t...

2007-11-13 19:21:00
This morning?s passage of the Peru Free Trade Agreement by the U.S. House proves that the Democrat-controlled Congress is totally out of touch with the American people and refuses to abide by promises it made to voters in last year?s elections, Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich said immediately following the vote. ?They just don?t get it,? said Kucinich, D-OH, one of 132 members who voted against the measure, ?and neither do the other candidates for President whose campaign rhetoric on trade is a smokescreen to conceal their voting records on trade.? ?When they?re standing in front of a union audience or outside a closed plant somewhere, they bemoan the three millions jobs that have been lost because of free trade agreements,? Kucinich noted. ?When they had a chance to vote as a member of Congress, they supported those agreements, which means they voted against American workers.? Kucinich cited an analysis conducted by Public Citizen in August http://citizen.typep...

Many economists and politicians emphasize the importance of free trade in creating a competitive and efficient world economy. Free trade emphasizes the importance of different national economies producing to their strengths and advantages-ensuring maximum efficiency in the global market. Critics of the free trade argue that it does little to help workers while frequently leading to their exploitation. This debate draws the distinction between free and fair trade.
