Freedom Of Speech has it's limitations
2008-07-11 03:07:00
I would first like to thank Zennie for inviting me to this blog and have the ability to post here. My views may not represent how you feel, or how Zennie feels. I do thank him for giving me a voice on here. Now this may be an old story, but I am still upset with it. I was completely in awe when I discovered that the McCain camp removed the Librarian from the so called "Public" event for holding a sign that read "McCain = Bush".  I was further disgusted when I learned she was cited for "Trespassing".  Yes, trespassing at a public event. Public meaning "people in general", public meaning "NON PRIVATE". If we have the freedom of speech, shouldn't we be allowed to express ourselves the way we see fit? Shouldn't we be able to express our opinions even if it does not "fit in" with the republican party? If you missed the actual video, here is the 61 year old librarian being cited for "trespassing".And here is my response. Please excuse the cursing, as I am a former sailor. lol
Freedom Of Speech
2008-06-06 23:16:00
Sometimes, Freedom of Speech can and does anger up the blood. This is one of those times:In a quiet, upscale neighborhood in Charlotte, N.C., rows of custom-style homes and neatly landscaped lawns represent the American dream. But one local resident has shattered that image, calling for the death of American troops in Iraq and supporting Al Qaeda through his Web site, which he reportedly runs from his parents' home.Samir Khan is the man behind Revolution.Muslimpad.com - a radical Islamic site that praises Usama bin Laden and asks for Allah to "curse more American soldiers."The site posts videos of U.S. Humvees being blown up by roadside bombs in Iraq. It aims to inspire young Muslims to wage war against the West.Terrorism experts say the Web site, written in English, is one of the premiere sites for Western audiences to get access to radical Islamist propaganda.Khan, 22, declined requests for an interview, even when approached outside his home with cameras rolling. When asked if the...

Freedom Of Speech....For Democrats
2008-06-04 23:51:00
I'm a bit confused. How come a fictional movie about the assassination of George W. Bush gets made and published onto DVD, but when someone does an art exhibit about the assassinations of Obama and Clinton, it's shut down? This morning, a Boston-born performance artist, Yazmany Arboleda, tried to set up a provocative art exhibition in a vacant storefront on West 40th Street in Midtown Manhattan with the title, "The Assassination of Hillary Clinton/The Assassination of Barack Obama," in neatly stenciled letters on the plate glass windows at street level.By 9:30 a.m., New York City police detectives and Secret Service agents had shut down the exhibition, and building workers had quickly covered over the inflammatory title with large sheets of brown paper and blue masking tape. The gallery is across the street from the southern entrance to The New York Times building. The police officers declined to answer any questions, and at first would not permit reporters to speak with Mr. Arboled...
Brigitte Bardot Learns There is No Freedom of Speech in France | Middle Age

As proof that there is no freedom of speech in France, former pinup girl and movie star turned animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has been fined $23,160 for remarks insulting Muslims. The actual charges were "provoking discrimination and racial hatred for comments she made in a letter to Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy. 18 Zoom(s)

Government May Have Massive Surveillance Program for Use in National Emerge
2008-05-21 19:39:00
AlterNet ?Main Core,? a program that authorizes ?computer searches through massive [unspecified] electronic databases? in order to discover ?potential threats? in the event of a ?national emergency?: According to a senior government official??There exists a database of Americans, who, often for the slightest and most trivial reason, are considered unfriendly, and who, in a time of panic, might be incarcerated. The database can identify and locate perceived ?enemies of the state? almost instantaneously.? ? One knowledgeable source claims that 8 million Americans are now listed in Main Core as potentially suspect. In the event of a national emergency, these people could be subject to everything from heightened surveillance and tracking to direct questioning and possibly even detention. These so-called ?Continuity of Governance? plans, Radar notes, ?are shrouded in extreme secrecy, effectively unregulated by Congress or the courts.? ?Main Core is the table of contents for all th...

2008-05-19 06:12:00
AlterNet The earth we share as our common gift, to be passed on in good condition to our children's children, is being despoiled. Private wealth is growing as public needs increase apace. Our Constitution is perilously close to being consigned to the valley of the shadow of death, betrayed by a powerful cabal of secrecy-obsessed authoritarians. Terms like "liberty" and "individual freedom" invoked by generations of Americans who battled to widen the 1787 promise to "promote the general welfare" have been perverted to create a government primarily dedicated to the welfare of the state and the political class that runs it. Yes, Virginia, there is a class war and ordinary people are losing it. It isn't necessary to be a Jeremiah crying aloud to a sinful Jerusalem that the Lord is about to afflict them for their sins of idolatry, or Cassandra, making a nuisance of herself as she wanders around King Priam's palace grounds wailing "The Greeks are coming." Or Socrates, the gadfly, stin...
Our anti-freedom of speech government
2008-05-07 23:32:00
The Christian Institute reports,"Wednesday, 7 May 2008The Government last night succeeded in deleting a free speech protection from its proposed homophobic hatred offence. But the House of Lords has another chance to reinsert one tonight.MPs in the House of Commons backed a Government motion to delete the free speech amendment. They voted 338 to 136.The Government will attempt to address concerns by tabling a different amendment in the Lords tonight which would require the Government to publish statutory guidance on the new law.But critics say this falls short of the protection which would be offered by a specific free speech protection written into the Bill. The Lords will have an opportunity to reinsert the free speech protection tonight. The protection seeks to make it clear that criticising homosexual practice or urging people to refrain from such conduct will not, in itself, be a crime. The amendment says, "for the avoidance of doubt, the discussion or criticism of sexual conduct...

Freedom of Speech Versus Anarchy in Egyptian Society
2008-04-19 23:08:00
About two years ago, a group of concerned citizens in Egypt formed an organization called MARED, an acronym for "Masryoun [Egyptians] Against Religious Discrimination." The main goal of this group is to finally bring some sort of sanity to the current state of a deeply divided Egyptian society, a division rooted in religious discrimination and intolerance. This group (MARED) is made up of highly respected intellectual members of the Egyptian society, such as academicians, journalists, businesspeople, government officials, scientists, human rights activists, artists, philosophers, religious thinkers and many others. Most of them are Muslim, but the organization also includes Christians and representatives of other religious and secular groups in Egypt.A few months ago, MARED decided to make plans for holding its first congress, aimed at discussing the roots of and solutions for the crisis of religious divide and discrimination in the Egyptian society. The congress carried the slogan "...

Freedom of Speech and Expression are cornerstones and the lifeblood of any democracy. Freedom Of Speech Might Lead To Freedom Of Belief
2008-04-09 00:31:00
Muhammad Al-Munajid: Some of these heretics say: "Islam is not the private property of anyone." So what do they want? They say: "No sect has a monopoly on Islam." So what do they want? They say: "We want to issue rulings." Someone who is ignorant, who does not know any Arabic, or who has no knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence wants to issue rulings?! They say: "We reinterpret the texts." There is a very dangerous conspiracy against the religion of Islam in newspapers and in what these people say. A journalist, or one of those lowlifes, wants to... These people are a mixture of Western, local, and imported ideologies, but they want to express their views with regard to religious rulings. This is the prerogative of religious scholars, not of ignorant people, the prerogative of knowledgeable people, not of fools or heretics. ... Network Solutions enemy of Freedom of Speech
2008-03-25 23:48:00
Web hosting company Network Solutions LLC has suspended a Web site that a conservative Dutch politician wanted to use to release an anti-Quran video that critics are saying is extremely critical of Islam.Freedom of speech is the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship. The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed under international law through numerous human rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, although implementation remains lacking in many countries. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes preferred, since the right is not confined to verbal speech but is understood to protect any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.I am have a real problem with this. You have discussion and conversation instead of just shutting down the website. Who has crowned Network Solutions has the speech polic...
Ezra Levant as freedom-of-speech champion?
2008-03-20 00:23:00
Ezra Levant's griping about the evils of the Human Rights Commission, is a little rich. Levant as freedom of speech champ? Well maybe, if you have a really good sense of humor.Conservatives who make a big deal about HRC assaults on freedom of speech are less than consistent. When they happen to be the target of speech they don't like, it's an entirely different story. The frivolous, self-serving lawsuit isn't a hard call for the well heeled who have no problem covering the legal fees. In Conrad Black's case it was almost a reflex action. Of course they argue that well ... unlike the HRC, we're talking about a court of law, rules of evidence etc with the risk of having to cough up legal fees if you're on the losing end. This overlooks the truth that lawsuits of this type are frequently used to shut people up for self-serving reasons that require a bit of finessing by a resourceful lawyer or two in order to stand up in court.Forget about the lawsuit end of it.The conduct of a ...

Barack Obama’s pastor, Jeremiah Wright, has been scrutinized a lot lately for his political activism from the pulpit. GERALDINE FERRARO LEARNS THE HARD WAY Freedom of Speech?  In the democrat party? Wachew talkin’ bout Willis!? Jimmy Z -  It doesn’t much matter if Geraldine Ferraro was right or wrong. She’s a goner. The first woman to run on a major party ticket as vice president is now (and probably forever) has now made a ‘racist statement,’ and she’s toast. Goodbye. Hand in your resignation. We won’t be needing your services any longer. Pack it up, you’ve outlived your usefulness. I’m not interested in defending Geraldine Ferraro.  I love the fact that the democrats are in complete chaos, and I’m happy to see them imploding all over themselves. Ms. Ferraro might have been right. I can see how a white candidate, with as preposterously nothing to say on the campaign trail as Barack Obama, would never have come this far. Sure, I get that. Ms. Ferraro might have been wrong.  I can see how Barack Obama has great cha...

Court Attacks Free Speech
2008-02-27 15:57:00
Los Angeles Times A coalition of media and public interest organizations went to federal court in San Francisco on Tuesday urging a judge to reconsider his order to shut down a muckraking website that publishes leaked documents from businesses and government agencies worldwide. Lawyers for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union, Public Citizen and several news organizations, told U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White that two orders he issued last week against wikileaks.org were prior restraints that violated the 1st Amendment. Laura Handman, a Washington, D.C., attorney for the news organizations, said White's order was so expansive that the only way to describe it was as if a judge had shut down a newspaper because of controversy over one article. "I can't think of another injunction that was so broad," said Matt Zimmerman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil rights group that focuses on digital issues. White acted in response to a laws...

Gov. Joey Salceda of Albay made a very promising quote about our very own Philippine "President Evil"After I saw such news over ANC earlier in the afternoon today, I was literally laughing my fucking ass off thinking, why such a person who's too close to her, whom she considered an ally would say such a remark that makes her even more vulnerable to the public. I have never imagined she's being tagged as the LUCKIEST BITCH AROUND! Hahaha, KUDOS to Gov!And I quote Governor Salceda."Alam naman nating lahat, at alam naman ni Presidente na maswerte siya... uhm, she may be a bitch but she's the luckiest bitch around."Although she's that lucky, we could not tell. I hope everything's going to be okay. Not for that evil woman, but for us Filipino.PLEASE CLICK HERE for the video itself. The video is from http://www.mukamo.comxoxo,-tons-kie

The limits to freedom of speech...
2008-02-06 22:53:00
Let me make something perfectly clear. Someone wants to tell me I am wrong. Fine. Someone wants to tell me that they believe I have an IQ of around 70. Fine. Someone wants to disagree with another member and let them know in no uncertain terms. Fine. But there really isn't any place on a political blog for dialogue that includes attacking spouses, sisters, mothers and include words like cocksucker and douchebag. Maybe it's just me, but somehow that doesn't appear to hold any real relevant value to our discussions about Super Tuesday results or who might beat who in the upcoming general election. So while I am loath to start editing comments or god forbid banning people... I do post a warning on the comment popup box: **NOTE: COMMENTS UNRELATED TO THREAD MAY BE DELETED** **THIS INCLUDES USE OF SPAM, FLAME, OR PROFANITY** So keep this in mind and hopefully we can all be adults here and consider that right now we are getting literally 1000's of hits a day due to the electi...

Shhh...don't talk about Holocaust
2008-01-23 20:53:00
Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, should have known that there are different standards of free speech in the Western World. If you wish to demonise Muslims or make objectionable caricatures, you will have the free speech advocates firmly standing behind you and calling it your birth right to ridicule Muslims. But if you 'dare' suggest that Zionists (I am not saying Jews) are exploiting Holocaust, you are in for trouble. In his essay published in the Washington Post, Gandhi wrote that "Jews today not only want the Germans to feel guilty but also the whole world to regret...."He further wrote that the future of Jewish identity appears bleak as Israel doesn't want to befriend any nation rather wishes to live by dominating others. Now that was enough for Zionists to cry foul.So much hue and cry was raised that Gandhi was made to resign from the MK Gandhi Institute for Non-Violence, an institute which he founded 17 years ago. So you can't even dare ask Zionists to introspe...
FBI denies file exposing nuclear secrets theft
2008-01-21 15:34:00
Hey, Murdock can't be all bad. His newspaper in London, often used as a disinformation leaker for US intelligence, has a real story today. Today, I got more information on Sibel Edmund than in any US news source. I'm guessing that what Sibel tripped over was the Bush Administration, via the Turkish ambassador and the No 3 man in the State Department, leaking nuclear secrets to Turkey to counter Iran's nuclear ambitions. It seems that Bush is in the business of nuclear proliferation to India, and now to Turkey?? Worse yet, Turkish intelligence has a cozy relationship with Pakistani intelligence. Now doesn't that sound reassuring?? Hat tip to The Brad Blog. Times Online THE FBI has been accused of covering up a key case file detailing evidence against corrupt government officials and their dealings with a network stealing nuclear secrets. The assertion follows allegations made in The Sunday Times two weeks ago by Sibel Edmonds, an FBI whistleblower, who worked on the age...

Preserve Internet Liberty, Prevent Corporate Monopoly
2007-12-01 23:27:00
A great article from Juan Cole at Informed Comment. We all know the drawbacks of corporate news outlets, and the great blessing that the internet represents for grassroots organizing and information sharing. But of course, the big corporations are very unhappy about losing some control of these matters, and have been pushing for legislation to end internet liberty and make it into the Corporate Monopoly Internet (CMI), cutting out individuals and small groups. Some may think the word "monopoly" an exaggeration. But all private television news broadcasts are owned by only five corporations in the United States. Five is too little for healthy competition, and all five disallow centrist and progressive points of view as most Americans would define them (i.e. the range of acceptable opinion on the US airwaves is from center-right to far right). Opinion polling decisively shows that the American public is very substantially to the left of virtually all television broadcasts with a soci...

Freedom of speech

Clinton was interrupted by a Code Pink antiwar demonstrator shouting that she had voted for the war in Iraq. "Excuse me, were you invited to speak here this afternoon?" Clinton responded. The man, identified as Tigh Berry by Code Pink co-founder Jodie Evans, was quickly surrounded and taken outside by uniformed Los Angeles police officers. He was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car, but it was not clear whether he was arrested. Sure... the same people who were once upset because there was protest zones set up during GOP events will have little to say about Hillary Clinton shutting down dissent during her events. Whether it be a guy asking too many questions of John Kerry or someone critical of Hillary Clinton, the left is starting to look downright gestapolike in their control.
