Chicago Cubs Friday Headlines
2009-11-06 14:42:00
There is nothing more bittersweet for a mother than the day when one of her babies grows up and leaves the nest. Sure, you're baby will never be a baby again. Then again, now maybe you can have your life back instead of having some whiny, clingy, grumpy toddler with sticky hands and a running nose clinging to your skirt all day. And like, instead of watching "The Wiggles" 24-hours a day and getting to the point where you start trying to figure out which Wiggle is the hottest because you're so desperate for adult company and conversation that you start thinking Steve from Blues Clues is probably kind of a babe in real life, you can watch the...

Starring Mink Stole and Karen Black. Boy Crazy This program features some of the festival's best shorts about boys, boys, and more boys! Chicago Cubs Headlines for Friday: Scaaaaary Halloween Edition
2009-10-30 14:46:00
In honor of my mostest absolutest favoritest holiday of the year, today's headlines will center around things that scare me. And don't miss this afternoon's diary: Top Ten Scaaaaaariest Free Agents! Today's the day the Ricketts family meets with the media and holds pressers and talks about how great everything is going to be under their regime. . . i mean "leadership." The first thing that scares me about the Ricketts family is Tom's hair. I mean, I don't even let Aidan have that hair, and he's 8. Also, I think the tie in this photo evidences some pretty poor judgment. Let's just hope that doesn't carryover to the Winter Meetings. Scaaaaaaaary. Are you ready for our next totally terrifying headline? If you...
Four on Friday
2009-10-30 07:19:00
Dan Pompei writes a column claiming that defensive scheming is the reason Greg Olsen's been underwhelming this season.  It's a ridiculous column.  If Greg Olsen is the elite-type player his ability suggests, he needs to beat nickel corners in man coverage.  If Greg Olsen is the elite-type player his ability suggests, Ron Turner needs to anticipate the opposition and find ways to isolate him on mismatched defenders.  When is the last time we wrote about OUR pass catchers winning battles or OUR coaching staff exploiting a mismatch?Steven Rosenbloom is crabby but he makes a terrific point: "You would hope that Alex Brown and Adewale Ogunleye could make something happen, could be game-changers. But they haven't had a sack since beating...

IceHogs Sink Admirals 6-1 Friday Night
2009-10-24 18:19:00
Fans reacting to the Rockford IceHogs scoring their 1st goal of the night. The desire to win was burning brightly when the Rockford IceHogs took to the ice last night in Rockford. But they had two huge obstacles to overcome; the first was facing the Milwaukee Admirals for the first time since their post season playoff run ended 4-0. The second obstacle was that the IceHogs were fresh off an embarrassing loss on Wednesday to Peoria. The IceHogs came back in great form, defeating the Admirals 6-1, proving to themselves they could overcome mental obstacles. Rockford's Evan Brophey, assisted by Mike Brennan, was the first to light up Milwaukee's net minder, Mark Dekanich, at 10:04 into the first frame....

School News For A Friday Morning
2009-10-16 14:02:00
Sometimes Chicago education news feels more like a police blotter than a roundup of school-related stories. Obama in New Orleans: 'It's clear how far we have to go'  LA Times Obama's Education secretary, Arne Duncan met with students and local officials at John McDonogh Senior High. Paul Vallas, the head of the city's Recovery School District, spoke of the hundreds of millions in rebuilding funds he was still hoping to receive from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Displaced Teachers Become Subs On Friday
2009-10-15 19:30:00
Tough times for Chicago's teachers. It's dark when they wake up in the morning. And cold. Their union is dysfunctional and in disarray. The students aren't getting any nicer. They're almost certainly going to get swine flu -- at least once. Thanksgiving is a long way away. But at least they're not in the dreaded reassigned teachers pool -- yet.

Your manners are showing! At least, that's what Hugh Beaumont (aka Ward Cleaver) reminds us multiple times in this gem from the 1950s.Sure, some of this seems corny, but these lessons hold just as true today. From the rude woman who brushes her hair on the bus to the kind kid who introduces himself to the new kid at school, there's a lot of good stuff here. Why aren't these films shown in schools anymore?Have a polite weekend!...
Minnesota Twins version of Chicago Cubs Headlines for Friday
2009-10-09 11:50:00
Creepy manager hugs didn't help win game one, so none for game twoWe should've been preparing for this moment since our Twins lost on Wednesday, but it slipped past me. I failed to see it coming. It's the use of the "must-win situation". To be fair, Kelsie Smith probably doesn't write her own headlines, but the St. Paul Pioneer Press has graced us with the fabled "must-win" one game before it's actually a "must-win". Tonight's game is a "probably-should-win-if-we-want--to-win-the-series". Anyway, on to Kelsie:True. The Twins played the Yankees in the 2003 and 2004 American League Division Series. Both of those series started at Yankee Stadium, and both times the Twins won Game 1, then lost the next three. So they...

Which comes first: poverty or spanking? Friday news round up
2009-09-18 22:10:00
Photo by Art by Heather on FlickrThe LA Times reviews a new Duke University study that tries to untangle spanking your kids from being poor. The study shows that poor children are way more likely to be spanked, but it also makes them more aggressive and slows their development. It sort of asks the question - are kids spanked because they are poor and then become poor because they were spanked? The study says parents often spank because they themselves are dealing with challenges - like being a young or single parent or living in poverty - and they also might reflect that poor parents are preparing their kids for a life full of these same challenges. The UN and the...
Friday Random Song: Jason Bravo, "You Raise Me Up"
2009-09-18 21:12:00
Buffalo, NY-based singer/songwriter Jason Bravo's performances of original pop songs and classic covers can be enjoyed on his YouTube channel, BraveHealerMusic. His debut album "Between Head and Heart" is available from CDBaby. In this concert clip from summer 2009, he's performing Josh Groban's hit song "You Raise Me Up", with my best buddy Greg Bravo on the awesome guitar solos. When I am down, and oh my soul, so weary. When troubles come, and my heart burdened be. Then I am still and wait here in the silence. Until You come and sit awhile with me. You raise me up so I can stand on mountains. You raise me up to walk on stormy seas. I am strong when I am on your shoulders. You raise me up to more than I can be. You raise me up so I can stand on mountains. You raise me up to walk on stormy seas. I am strong when I am on your shoulders. You raise me up to more than I can be. There is no life -- no life without its hunger. Each restless heart beats so imperfectly. But when you ...

Game Notes For Friday @ Redbirds
2009-09-18 20:35:00
* The Cardinals have won five of their last six home games against the Cubs, and have limited the Cubs to a total of just two runs over their last three meetings in St. Louis. * Since the beginning of August, the Cubs have not won a single game (0-15) in which they failed to hit a single home run. * On this date 41 years ago, Ray Washburn of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched a no-hit game against the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park. Washburn won a 2-0 decision, just one day after San Francisco's Gaylord Perry hurled a no-hitter at Candlestick. The performances by Washburn and Perry marked the first time that consecutive no-hitters occurred in the...
Friday Night "Mights": Redskins vs Rams - My Bold Predictions
2009-09-18 20:30:00
More photos » by Phil Coale - AP This is the week Brian Orakpo makes it onto Sportscenter. Browse more photos » I got a bit harassed after last Friday's edition of  the "Mights". First of all, I was 0-5. Secondly, some of my predictions were simply not bold enough by my own standards as well as those of some of our most ardent commenters (TheOverLordMarshl). As much as I hate being wrong, I hate being anything less than bold even more. Please note: the "Mights" pre-suppose victory and indicate those things which would either likely or hopefully occur if and when the Redskins are operating on all cylinders against their opponent on any given Sunday. 1) Jason Campbell: 300+ yards, 3+ touchdowns - This pick is officially NOT based on any indication or predicton of JC's skills. Friday Five: The Year?s Best Bird Songs

Friday Blues Funny - Devil Got My Woman
2009-09-18 10:00:00
These two video clips are from the critically acclaimed movie Ghost World. One of the subplots of the movie revolves around the relationship of Seymore (played by Steve Buscemi), and a young lady named Chloe. The first scene is one where Chloe is teasing Semore about dropping his Skip James record. For some odd reason this is funny to me. The second scene is of her listening to the record. I thought it was cool and amusing how they wove this song into this movie.I wish more Hollywood types would go back and take a look at some of the blues music of the past and use it in todays movies.

Op-Ed Friday: Help Save Arizona- Eat Out
2009-09-11 17:24:00
It’s Friday, and we finally have a solution to stabilizing the housing market- eat out.  After all, a bad economy makes for a bad housing market, and dining out will help fix that:  [Thanks L!] Gov. Jan Brewer took the stage Thursday with rocker and restaurateur Alice Cooper to convince Arizonans that dining out is good for the state. Announcing a three-month public-awareness campaign called Dine 4 AZ, they said going to restaurants  supports businesses and helps preserve jobs. Brewer noted that restaurants generate 10 percent of Arizona’s tax revenues. "We are working hard to lead the Grand Canyon State forward and out of this recession, and Dine 4 AZ fits perfectly into our plan," she said. "Please treat your family to a meal and we’ll get through this together." According to Stephen D. Chucri, president and CEO of the Arizona Restaurant Association:   We’ve been hit hard by unemployment, immigration issue...

The Friday Night Army of art critics prepares for battle
2009-09-04 15:57:00
On Friday, September 11, 2009, over 70 galleries will open their doors and showcase some of their strongest work in the opening of the season. Even though there's no official name or corporate sponsor, the streets in the West Loop and River North are filled with people, and the galleries are so packed that you can't see anything beyond the crowd.   The irony is that you can't see much art on the opening night.  Oh well. That's what friends are for. For us gallery rats, this is the big cheese-cube-on-a-toothpick night, and the box wine and Old Style flows like a river. Who's charging at the door on opening night?  (one gallery is) Is it going to...
