King Crimson Live and the Incredible Guitar Work of Robert Fripp
2008-02-27 07:01:00
In the realm of progressive rock there seems to be a band that I have been trying and trying to get into for years: King Crimson. I don’t know what it is that has kept me from really getting into their work before, especially because I’ve been a fan of the guitar work ...

I’ve decided to put a halt to my normal shenanigans and skedaddle to the other side of the spectrum to indulge in some good old fashioned word play. I’ve been collecting a list of words that have “fallen out of fashion” in the last century, although, I bet if you rent a copy of the ...

It’s the new Theo Travis CD: Double Talk. 14.05 Much shouting from the kitchen: have the DGM Team fallen out? No, they assured me, we are discussing rugby. Do I hear some other shouting?... ? where David is at work preparing DGM accounts. DGM?s royalty reports are refreshingly clear, straightforward & transparent. So, nothing like the royalty statements I have received from Virgin / EMI ? and I?ll stop there before commenting on royalty statements from a Management Firm that protected its artists? interests by putting them on its own record label. One interesting report in this period?s EMI statement? hang about dude! I (almost) hear the sharp, perceptive & attentive DGM visitor expostulating. Your licence with EMI ended in 2003 with a sell-off period of 6 months. How come you?re getting royalty statements 3 full years after that? Even after the large settlement for under-payment that took lotsa effort to extract from them 2 or 3 years ago? Which wouldn?t have happened unless they knew you were ready to take legal action? Well spotted, O Perceptive Visitor! I respond. The EMI royalty statement is for RF & The LCG: one sale in Bulgaria (or is it...

*This is just an excerpt, read the full entry here*18.21 Practising. David is off to a meeting of the School Governors. Stan Lee has called from Spain. Stan was our drummer in the first League of Gentlemen (1964/5). There has been a death in the family. This is a time to reach out to the first circle outside the family: the circle of old friends. 20.55 A computing frenzy. 22.47 Enough. What?s that?...

Rising in Bredonborough at 04.00 & punctually out the door at 04.30 to Birmingham Airport, a leap & a half above Luton (Gateway To The Pit); and a BMI Baby flight, booked online, itself a leap above Easyjet. Some adventures using the rear-entry portable stairs (only providing access on the third attempt). While mounting them on the second occasion, the wife of a couple who had spent the entire ?bus journey terminal > ?plane staring at my Wife, asked: Staring Woman: Is your wife Paula ? Paula Willcox?RF: No.Staring Woman: She looks just like her!RF: It?s the height.*Read the complete entry here*
Andrew Keeling On Robert Fripp's At The End Of Time
2007-09-16 07:29:00
Evensong: Haapsalu uses an organ Diapason setting together with the 'orange' timbre. The harmonic scheme is C minor/G minor and Bb major recalling material from A Blessing of Tears. The coda is a lengthy carillon of Bb pentatonic a Major 3rd away from the F# centre, providing a resolution to the album as a whole. This latest Soundscape collection from Robert Fripp is the work of an artist who sounds as if he's made peace with himself; a musician who has made the transition through business and personal grief. At the End of Time is a thoroughly rewarding album which surpasses the work of many other contemporary so-called 'ambient' albums. There are more entries on At the End Of Time, view them here.

New diary from Robert Fripp

A sunny morning with a hint of approaching autumn. 11.12 David is back from the Singleton family holiday. We have re-arranged the world over tea in the kitchen & all is now heading in the Right Direction. 12.24 Our Landlord? ? is not a man to upset? This is information that the prospective burglars who came visiting last week around two in the morning would do well to ingest. Mr. Fry leant out of his bedroom window next door & spoke to them in direct terms in a broad accent of the local kind. They demurred & left, fairly swiftly. Fortunately, today Mr. Fry is in a good mood?Read on over here.

One of DGMLive?s top downloads is set for a CD in mid-October. The Cotswold Gnomes will hit the shops under its original tongue-in-cheek title, Unreleased Works of Startling Genius. The initial manufacturing run of the album will be issued as a limited edition 2CD set showcasing the music in different ways. CD1 offers the first 12 pieces in segued form with only track 13 (regarded by both musicians as one of Fripp?s finest recorded performances) separate, while CD 2 offers the 13 pieces individually. When the initial run is exhausted; a single CD of the music as presented on CD1 will become the standard release edition.DGM's mail order shop will be taking pre-orders on September 1st.*§Source: DGM*

Robert Fripp speaks on his recent gig at The Palace Of Music in Barcelona
2007-08-20 02:34:00
A powerful performance. Flashes & excessive photography finished the show after one encore, VROOOM. We would have played for another 20 minutes, but something was spoiled. What a pity. And it was a stomper of a performance. The monster Soundscapes continued after the VROOM Coda, slowly fading & reverberating in the hall as people were leaving. Then, they were suddenly brought down. Who? Why? It was the local sound man. He was a problem from the beginning (in his case, the start) as evidenced in his attitude, behaviour & several comments to our people. He clamed to be the sound person for Sr. Paco de Lucia, an artist deserving of respect and admiration, but whose good name this man sullied by claiming association. I returned to the stage & asked him: why did you bring down the music? He played the I do not speak English card, so we added a translator. Why did you bring down the music? The answer ? because I have an attitude, came with an attitude, resent being he...
Robert Fripp's That Which Passes available as download
2007-08-17 23:09:00
Whilst earlier soundscape albums had presented live performances more or less intact, this was the first to use the raw material and consciously manipulate and fashion it into something else.As Fripp observed "although the music is taken from live performances, it would not have sounded like this in any one performance - although it might have done."Terrifyingly bleak in places and beautifully uplifting in others, Fripp regarded it as a companion album to A Blessing of Tears ? ?a personal eulogy to my dear Mother? he wrote in the sleeve notes at the time. That Which Passes he says is ?a series of reflections on mortality and dying.?As with most Fripp releases the critics were divided. Total Guitar recognised Fripp?s pioneering work but felt it was little more than ?an academic exercise in weirdness.? Wire magazine on the other hand felt it to be a ?surprisingly emotional result.? That would certainly apply to the final track, A Time To Die, which carefully unfolds into ...

Robert Fripp - Exposure
2007-04-02 14:21:00
Easily Robert Fripp’s most pop-oriented solo album–not that that’s saying much–1979’s ‘Exposure’ is also probably the best non-King Crimson or League of Gentlemen album of his career. Using guest vocalists Daryl Hall, Terre Roche, and Peter Gabriel, all of whom Fripp had produced albums for in the preceding year, Fripp’s usual tape loops and fiery ...
