Mad as a Box of Frogs...

Sometimes you have to shake your head. Some ideas are best unsaid.Case in point, the idea that on the last day of the month students will be given wine to drink in classes.Apparently the CEO,Mr Inayoshi is taking the credit for this.Once again the leadership of GCom is betraying its origins.Theres a world of difference between running a so-called language school organisation and a chain of restaurants. The motivations and expectations of language learners and diners are not the same. For one thing the investment in time and money made by students is hugely more significant.Apart from the simple fact that there wont be enough space on a table to balance glasses in a five student lesson I have a number of problems with the concept. My first and major objection is that it doesnt seem professional.I never thought learning and the consumption of alcohol made for good bedfellows.A language school doesnt seem the appropriate environment to be drinking.Sour grapes on my part.Possibly.But theres ...

Mountain Yellow-Legged Frogs in the Sierra Nevada
2008-05-06 11:21:00
I don't write much about amphibians on here, but I am amphibian nut, in addition to being a mammal, reptile and bird nut. I would be a plant and insect nut too if I could only figure out how to identify them. I'm interested in fish, but they are a little harder to observe in the wild unless they are at the end of your hook.Anyway, I have long taken an interest in amphibians here in California and to a much lesser extent, throughout the entire West. I am particularly interested in threatened and endangered amphibians here in the state. The mountain yellow-legged frog has declined disastrously here in the state, starting with heavy fish stocking in the Sierras by pack mules, and then declining wildly with arial stocking of high country lakes via airplane that began after World War 2. This arial stocking has since proven to be one of the stupidest things that the California Department of Fish and Game has ever done.Every year, countless fingerlings were dropped into lakes all up and d...

The Frogs? Legs Social Experiment
2008-03-30 20:39:00
(Image: Michigan J. Frog? from the Warner Brothers? film ?One Froggy Evening? )What would happen if you took a family group of 8 people, of two generations and varying culinary tastes, and presented them with a plate of frogs? legs? Well that?s exactly what I found out on Friday night when dining at a Chinese restaurant to celebrate Rob?s birthday with our families. Now for any social experiment such as this you need to understand the group you?re dealing with. So let me give you a brief overview. I?d say we?re a fairly typical British family in terms of our culinary tastes, the older generation being generally more reserved than the younger, liking their meat well cooked and ingredients they know and trust. But we all share a love of good food and an interest in how it?s sourced, and we all enjoy home cooking to varying degrees. We were in high spirits on Friday night and looking forward to a Chinese feast. When it came to ordering Rob?s brother discretely pointed out to the waitress...

Bears can be mean, but frogs are always cool...
2008-01-22 16:01:00
I went to England to tell jokes, and I wanted to tell my Smokey the Bear joke, but I had to ask the English people if they knew who Smokey the Bear is. But they don't. In England, Smokey the Bear is not the forest-fire-prevention representative. They have Smackie the Frog. It's a lot like a bear, but it's a frog. And that's a better system, I think we should adopt it. Because bears can be mean, but frogs are always cool. Never has there been a frog hopping toward me and I thought, Man, I better play dead! --- What exam do young witches have to pass? A spell-ing test!

Tree frogs and other terrifying things....
2008-01-06 00:01:00
Today, I had a near perfect day. I got a lot of work done. My kids barely fought at all. Hubby finished a complicated but necessary home renovation project. And, in the afternoon, all four of us went golfing. I know, that sounds a little dull, but it was cool. We all just had a blast. I let my son steer the golf cart for a couple of minutes. It made him feel very grown up. My daughter was hitting really well, so she was very proud of herself. She got to drive the cart by herself. She did a surprisingly good job. Hub is an avid golfer so he had a blast. I was pretty much along for the ride. I just dressed like a goomba and drank a couple of beers. It was fun and very relaxing. So, being in such a benevolent mood, I thought that tonight I'd share a little bit about myself - not work, family or bead related. The first ten items on my "Siren's Song" list:1. I was voted 'Most Popular', 'Nicest' and 'Best Dressed' in Junior High.2. Ironically (see 1.), I had barely a...
frogs found inside rocks
2007-12-28 20:18:00
This mummified corpse of a frog was found in a hollow flint 'geode' which was cracked open in 1899 by workmen in a quarry in England. There have been many reports of frogs found inside rocks; some still living in a kind of stupor but which revived once exposed to the air.In 1910 a living toad was found when a piece of coal was broken open; another was found in 1906 six feet underground in a solid layer of clay. The most commonly found seem to be stuck in limestone. The theory is that a small tadpole somehow enters a crack in a forming nodule or pocket and gets trapped in there as it grows. As it does, the smell attracts tiny insects which feed the toad and keep it alive. Through this crack also comes water and air. This is fine for some of the many examples that have been found but makes no sense in cases where live frogs have been found in totally sealed or deeply buried pockets. Some frogs have been found with the impression of their bodies so tightly jammed against the rock 'po...

Live Frogs and Rats eating in China
2007-12-12 11:40:00
A man in southeast China says 40 years of swallowing tree frogs and rats live has helped him avoid intestinal complaints and made him strong.Jiang Musheng, a 66-year-old resident of Jiangxi province, suffered from frequent abdominal pains and coughing from the age of 26, until an old man called Yang Dingcai suggested tree frogs as a remedy, the Beijing News said on Tuesday."At first, Jiang Musheng did not dare to eat a live, wriggling frog, but after seeing Yang Dingcai swallow one, he ate ... two without a thought," the paper said."After a month of eating live frogs, his stomach pains and coughing were completely gone."Over the years Jiang had added live mice, baby rats and green frogs to his diet, and had once eaten 20 mice in a single day, the paper said.
What Can Frogs Teach Us?
2007-11-30 09:45:00
Fear of the unknown has always been at the root of most of the fears we consciously and unconsciously harbor. Slipping into the unknown as opposed to being shoved into it are two ways we are led into the unknown. There is a time and place for both as long as we can recognize it and respond accordingly. What Can Frogs Teach Us About Change? By Amanda Gore You have probably heard that old story

Watch the frogs hop at Pyestang Tugak
2007-10-04 19:36:00
The City of San Fernando, Pampanga will end the Pyestang Tugak: 5th Annual San Fernando Frog Festival later today. This event is extra special to me since I organized the first one way back in 2003. Frogs are a unique part of Pampanga culinary traditions. And by organizing the festival, the city is ensuring that these traditions are preserved and promoted. There is a traditional way of catching frogs called paduasan. In the early days, when the rains came, while the elders where busy planting rice, kids would catch frogs. This game eventually evolved into a specialized technique and skill. Catchers use a bamboo rod called the paduas. And at the end of the string, they attach a type of worm called bulateng tudtud or sleeping worm. Once the frog bites, its tongue get entangled with the worm, and the catcher is able to hurl it up in the air and lets it fall into a net called panyapu. It was a common sight to see people lined-up on top of the pilapil or rice paddies with a paduas in one h...

Two Frogs
2007-08-24 13:43:00
A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, "Did you not hear us?" The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time. This story teaches two lessons:1. There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day.2. A destruct...

Frogs & Crocodile's Food
2007-07-08 23:35:00
My recent posts about medieval games encouraged Mr Jolley (Strange Games' South of England Correspondent) to send me some descriptions of, what can only be described as, some extremely bizarre Victorian street games. Frogs & Crocodile's Food is one such game. A race game for teams of two players. One player bends over, holding his knees, forming a traditional 'frog', his team mate now leapfrogs over him and upon landing makes himself into the crocodile. He does this by lying on his back on the ground then by raising his body up on his hands and feet (better known as a crab position) . His team mate now rests his flat cap on the crocodile's stomach (thus forming the crocodile's food). The crocodiles race head first down the street with their assistants guiding, encouraging and retrieving the crocodiles' caps when they fall off. Obviously, with few children these days making the wise fashion choice that is the flat cap this part of the game would need changing; a baseball cap w...

100 Frogster Facts- Fact 5

Fact 5 about me is that I always, always, always wear shorts if the temperature is above 40 degrees fahrenheit (for my European readers, that’s 4.444444444444445 degrees celsius (formerly known as centigrade)).  4.444444444444444 degrees celsius would be iffy, and 4.444444444444443 degrees celsius is definitely long pants weather.  This leads some people to think I am ...

Caribbean Frogs Started With A Single, Ancient Voyage On A Raft From South
2007-06-08 03:00:00
Nearly all of the 162 land-breeding frog species on Caribbean islands originated from a single species that rafted on a sea voyage from South America about 30-to-50-million years ago, according to a DNA-sequence-analysis study. The discovery is surprising because no previous theories of how the frogs arrived had predicted a single origin and because groups ...
