Off The Front Page, But Still A Scourge
2008-08-06 20:06:00
The New York Times tells us here today that??millions of people are becoming infected because governments are overlooking studies showing that behavior modification works, AIDS experts said Tuesday.Among the behavior modifications the experts cited: promoting safer sex through delayed intercourse and the use of condoms, decreasing drug abuse, providing access to needle exchange programs and promoting male circumcision.(By the way, this story originated from the 26th International AIDS Conference in Mexico City.)Yes, none of these approaches are cure-alls by themselves, but, combined with drug therapies and other means, they can help slow the spread of the disease (obvious, I know, but it bears repeating). And Bloomberg tells us here that? The AIDS virus infects about 40 percent more people in the U.S. than the government has long estimated, federal health officials said today. The new data sparked criticism of Bush administration policies.About 56,300 people in the U.S. annually contr...
Newspaper Misspells its OWN Name on Front Page
2008-07-25 08:57:00
-By Warner Todd Huston For a little humorous break from the world of hard news, we have the embarrassing story of the Valley News that serves Vermont and New Hampshire misspelling its own name on the front page of the July 21 issue. The big oopsie was followed on July 22 with an egg-on-the-face, editor’s note apologizing ...
Not quite a ritual?
2008-06-07 17:07:00
While my law school roommate/foodie (and Obama campaign operative) Lou was in town, we tried out Ritual Tavern in North Park, one of the latest additions to the North Park restaurant renaissance, and a place I have been wanting to try. We were sadly disappointed with almost every dish — mostly because of a lack ...

Beer, a garden and great food in North County
2008-05-23 17:50:00
Good friend and wine connoisseur Larry suggested we go to lunch at the Stone Brewing Company in Escondido.  I had heard him and others talk about the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Garden before and jumped at the chance to give it a try.  According to Stone’s promotional literature, the food philosophy involves using as ...
Jayne?s Burger?
2008-05-19 17:17:00
A couple nights ago was our first time back to Jayne’s Gastropub since the baby was born.  We truly waited too long and will be back soon.  We have reviewed Jayne’s before (here and here) and have it on our San Diego Restaurants We Dig list, but wanted to make special mention of the burger which we ...
Brandt Beef Now Available at Hillcrest Farmer?s Market
2008-05-18 22:26:00
We missed the Farmer’s Market last week because of Mother’s Day, but were pleasantly surprised (ok pretty excited) to see Brandt Beef now has a stand there.   Those that read our reviews regularly will note that many of our favorite restaurants get their beef from this local (Brawley, CA in Imperial County) natural beef producer; ...
Chicken Pie Shop Turns 70
2008-05-17 16:19:00
The UT had an interesting little article on the Chicken Pie Shop (one of our local favorites for crazy cheap comfort food) highlighting that it has been in operation for 70 years.  Apparently turning down expansion and purchase offers the owners still run it like they did in 1938 (and I think the prices are ...
A shout out to Arrivederci?
2008-05-15 02:41:00
When you have lived in a neighborhood long enough, you forget about the consistently good local place you go to often and are rarely disappointed with.  It is the tough thing about writing about food for a hobby because I always feel like I need to try new places.  A week or so ago, I ...

For our friends in East County?
2008-05-09 18:31:00
In our inaugural column for San Diego Lawyer Journal, we asked local attorneys what their favorite lunch and dinner places were.  A federal judge told us about a place in El Cajon called Greek Style Chicken.  He is of Greek heritage and his mom used to insist on cooking when she visited.  After finally trying ...

Bob Barr on the front page of the Atlanta Journal
2008-04-26 15:13:00
When was the last time a Libertarian candidate made the front page of a major news paper?    This is one of the reasons why Barr needs to be our candidate in the Libertarian party.  Here is the article  also here is a link  www.ajc.comBarr's campaign for White House taking shapeBy JILL VEJNOSKAPublished on: 04/26/08 There's not a bit of bunting in sight. No rope line to hold back the rabid throngs. Secret Service protection? More like one endlessly patient young woman who answers the phone and greets strangers walking through the door with cheery aplomb. Chuck France/STR (ENLARGE) Former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr is running for the White House on the Libertarian ticket.  At first glance, this conservatively appointed office suite — muted carpeting, framed Ronald Reagan photo on the wall — in a high-rise building near the Cobb Galleria Centre could be home to any of the countless well-connected doctors, lawyers or investment pr...
Front Page: Not Guilty in Bell Case, al-Sadr Calls Truce, Syria Secret Nucl
2008-04-25 19:04:00
Not Guilty in Bell Case: Three New York City police officers have just been found innocent of all charges in the shooting death of an unarmed black man, Sean Bell, who was killed by 50 bullets on his wedding day. Bell, 23, was shot along with two friends, after a bachelor party at a strip club in November 2006. The case has generated outrage in New York's black community. A New York State Supreme Court judge cleared two officers of manslaughter and other charges and a third of reckless endangerment in the death. Syria Secret Nuclear Program: The United States has accused North Korea of helping Syria build a nuclear reactor that "was not intended for peaceful purposes." The US released photographs it said linked North Korea to a plutonium-producing reactor under construction in Syria. The accusation was an effort to put pressure on Pyongyang to come clean about proliferating nuclear technology. Though the accusations are not expected to derail international talks aim...

How to keep content on the front page of your WordPress blog

I am somehow frustrated and I can tell you that waiting for it to happen generated a lot of adrenaline. The Better Half indeed?
2008-04-07 03:32:00
For months we have been walking by the Better Half which opened shortly after Maia’s birth in one of Hillcrest’s infamously cursed spots (formerly the Abbey, Russo’s House and the restaurant between these two incarnations).  But the chef has a great pedigree and buzz is abound on Yelp and Chowhound, so we crossed our fingers. ...

Donovan?s and Steak Sandwiches on Game Days

I have been receiving a interesting new email from San Diego Magazine.  It is called The Main Dish and it seems to come out about once a week.  It has a restaurant review/feature (I suspect restaurants pay for it) and a comment from a local chef.  It also has a spotlight feature on a particular ...

Bloomberg Makes Front Page News For NOT Running For President
2008-02-28 18:22:00
We all know that money talks. But does it need to talk this loudly? 66-year-old billionaire businessman-turned-Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has announced via an op-ed piece in The New York Times today that he will not be running for President this year. According to Bloomberg, others have encouraged him to run - and though he had a $1 billion campaign prepared if he decided to do so, he instead is looking towards which candidate he might back. And? Do we care?

The Front Page H1 SEO Trick
2008-02-27 16:54:00
A description of how a font that is size H1 can be part of a good SEO strategy as the search engine spiders consider keywords in that font to be more important. If you want to search engine optimize your web page keywords using fonts then you might want to consider using the web design software Front Page to design your site. As you may or may not know, search engine spiders look for a block of a text when they are indexing your site. The theory is that when they find a keyword or a phrase in font that is written in an H1 size that it will consider that word or phrase to be of the most importance and index it accordingly in the search engine's database. In this particular instance your SEO strategy would be to first of all make sure that you are using Front Page to design your pages in the first place and second of all make sure that you have titles using the H1 header as part of your web copy somewhere on the page. Are there any drawbacks to this strategy of using the H1 font? Fir...
