The High-Fructose War
2008-09-21 03:14:00 The Corn Refiners Association is fighting back against people learning about the ill effects of High-Fructose Corn Syrup with commercials like this one:The evidence is piling up, with some of it not so well defined yet, as it relies on animal testing. But the tests are there and the results aren't that great. It may lead to diabetes. The Mayo clinic suggests that it may also lead to high cholesterol. Â An article in the San Francisco Chronicle mentions that the USDA suggests Americans reduce their intake of foods with added sugar.Whether it's simply the addition of high fructose corn syrup alone or all the refined and unnatural sugars in the American diets, it is quite clear that a reduction of artificial and refined sugars can improve your diet. I personally have been reducing as much of this as possible, I've moved from fake pancake syrup to the natural kind from New Hampshire, I try to only eat snack foods such as Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch bars that only contain cor...

The Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup
2008-05-21 13:39:00 High Fructose Corn SyrupBefore we get to high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), we will take a look at two other frequently used sweeteners, dextrose and maltodextrin.DextroseDextrose is more or less an industry term for glucose. Glucose isthe most prevalent sugar in the human and the only molecule that the brain can metabolize. Dextrose is refined from corn starch. It has a very high glycemic index (no surprise since it is glucose) and while it contains no fructose, it is still a simple sugar that is very readily absorbed. It is not as dangerous as sucrose but it still is a highly processed product that should be avoided.MaltodextrinMaltodextri-n is also a refined product usually made from either corn or potatoes. It is multiple glucose units somewhat loosely hooked together (a polymer). Because the bonds between the glucose units are very weak, it is also very readily absorbed and has a very high glycemic index. Like dextrose it should be avoided as much as possible. It has been called a...
Fructose Increases Insulin Resistance and Lipids
2008-05-05 20:33:00 High fructose corn syrup, a common sweetener of beverates, reduces insulin sensitivity and may contribute to heart disease. The type of high fructose corn syrup used in soft drinks consists of 55% fructose and 45% glucose… a ratio similar to table sugar. Drinking a fructose sweetened drink at each meal increased fasting glucose levels and decreased the glucose and insulin ...

High Fructose Corn Syrup Epidemic
2007-09-05 00:42:00 As a means of lowering costs, many food manufacturers are turning to the unhealthy and fat happy High Fructose Corn Syrup, instead of cane sugar. Study Links Diabetes and High Fructose Corn Syrup Found in Soda
2007-08-27 19:22:00 I saw something about this on Frontline not too long ago. With new hybrids of corn being developed, corn syrup is now very cheap to produce and it is used in everything. The researchers can track the spike in production using corn syrup to the rapid weight gain in youths and diabetes.http://feeds.feedburne-r.com/blogspot/naOQ

Hi Fructose Random Links
2007-07-25 18:53:00 Hifructose is an art magazine I've been wanting to read for a while after I saw it previewed in Boing Boing. I finally picked up issue five. I like it --- the art exists somewhere between ART and toy. It's trying to figure out the world using day-glo martians, saucer-eyed girls and morning-time dreams. That's my lax impression. In a magazine like this, I want to explore more art. So today's Thing is every URL in the magazine randomized. All the ads-which are mostly for galleries and toys-plus I went back and found the home page for each artist or work shown that was available. There are 80 links. Click on the button for a new, random link and get exploring. Sorry the button itself is so lame, it's a generic script. Hifructose does have a link page here, but this randomizer has links their page doesn't.Click Away.
Filling Up With Fruit: Fructose in the Gas Tank?
2007-06-21 18:49:00 Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have reported in the journal Nature that fructose, the sugar found in fruits, could be made into a fuel with a vastly greater energry output than ethanol. The fuel, known as dimethylfuran, contains 40% more energy than ethanol. The fructose used to make the fuel can be obtained straight from ...
Fructose: Sweet, But Dangerous
2007-05-08 13:31:00 Fructose is a monosaccharide (simple sugar), which the body can use for energy. Because it does not cause a high blood sugar rise (has a low glycemic index), it was once thought that fructose was a good substitute for sucrose (table sugar; cane or beet sugar), but the American Diabetes Association and nutritional experts have changed their minds about this. Is fructose bad for us? A small amount of fructose, such as would be found in most vegetables and fruits, is not a bad thing - in fact, there is evidence that a little bit may be a positive stimulus for proper glucose metabolism. However, too much fructose at once seems to overwhelm the body's capacity to process it. The diets of our ancestors contained only very small amounts of fructose. These days, estimates are that about 10% of the modern diet comes from fructose. What happens when we get too much fructose? Most of the carbohydrate we eat is made up of chains of glucose. When glucose enters the bloodstream, insulin release... |
