Toyota fuel cell Car
2008-06-08 10:02:00 Toyota Motors has said it finally has developed a new zero-emission fuel-cell vehicle that has a longer cruising distance than previous models and can operate in freezing temperatures. Many companies have been working to create a viable zero-emission car running on fuel cells, which produce electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, leaving water as the only by-product.Toyota engineers managed to control the amount of water produced inside the fuel-cell system, which previously interfered with electrical generation at low temperatures.Honda's Eco-Friendly Vehicle >>>The International Energy Agency estimated Friday that nearly a billion electric or fuel-cell vehicles may need to be put on the road as part of an "energy technology revolution" to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.Hope these vehicles gain much popularity and reduce the Green House Effect

2008-06-07 00:46:00 Toyota launches updated version of zero-emissions FCHV fuel-cell vehicle Toyota announced on Friday that it has developed a new hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle that is far more advanced than the automaker's previous-generation fuel-cell vehicle. The new system now allows the vehicle — dubbed the FCHV-adv — to travel 516 miles on a single tank of hydrogen and it can operate in conditions as cold as -22 degrees F. Through changes to the vehicle's fuel-cell unit, braking system and a few other tweaks, Toyota engineers were able to improve the fuel-cell's fuel efficiency by 25 percent, according to Automotive News. Those changes combined with a bigger fuel tank and the doubling of storage pressure netted a new range of 516 miles — up from the previous FCHV's (pictured) range of 205 miles. Top speed is a respectable 97 mph. In comparison, Honda's FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell sedan has a range of 385 miles and can operate in conditions from -22...

SAE Congress ?08: the problems of fuel cell commercialization
2008-04-20 04:40:00 There was a panel discussion at this week's SAE Congress that I couldn't pass up. Titled "Fuel Cell Vehicle Panel: Challenges Remaining for Commercialization," the session was a bit of a brainstorm on just how we might one day drive hydrogen-fueled cars with some of the people who are working quite diligently on the problem today. The panel featured Dr. Massimo Venturi, CTO of NuCellsys GmbH, Germany, Dr. Kev Adjemian, senior principle engineer, Nissan Fuel Cell Laboratory, Michigan, and Dr. James Miller, director, Electrochemical Technology Program, Argonne National Lab (for DOE), Fuel Cell Laboratory, Chicago. The three spoke and answered questions for about 30 minutes. Needless to say, the big problems weren't solved in this half hour, but it was enlightening to hear from another industry panel where things stand today regarding the automobile and the hydrogen economy. Considering that the public's perception of hydrogen fuel is currently defined (for many) as the Hindenberg ...

The future of airflight? Hydrogen Fuel Cell based!?
2008-04-05 05:50:00 What your looking at to the left might just be the future of flight, or at least whats inside of it might be to be more precise. With the rising cost of oil and jet fuel as well the Air industry is looking at alternative power sources just about as hard as the automotive industry is if not harder. With so many passengers at stake all demanding cheap flights in a world where prices to travel keep going up due to the constantly increasing fuel charges. In fact according to one of my shipping companies their jet fuel costs are closing in on TRIPLE their 2006-7 rates. The plane you see above is the prop driven aircraft that only has a single pilot seat but it did complete a 20 minute flight at 100km an hour at a 1km altitude. Not exactly magical, but what is is the fact it was powered by a hydrogen battery system not a standard power source. The 800 kilogram craft measured in at 16.3-meters of wingspan and with this new power pack is capable of 45 minutes of flight on a single hydr...

GM, Toyota leery about fuel-cell technology
2008-03-11 03:47:00 GM, Toyota leery about fuel-cell technology Although General Motors and Toyota are pressing on with their fuel-cell technologies, both companies are now questioning the future of hydrogen-powered vehicles. Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles have long been touted as the vehicles of the future — due to their water-only emissions — but their many hurdles and the emergence of more powerful lithium-ion batteries could see hydrogen-powered vehicles pushed to the back burner. GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz says that battery-powered vehicles are a much more viable option than fuel-cells, especially in the short-term. "If we get lithium-ion to 300 miles, then you need to ask yourself, Why do you need fuel cells?" Lutz told the Wall Street Journal. Lutz added that the cost of fuel-cell vehicles is nowhere near "where we need to be on the costs curve." It's estimated that a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle costs about $1 million, whereas GM's Chevrolet Volt electric...
Toyota refutes WSJ fuel cell story
2008-03-09 00:51:00 Recently the Wall Street Journal published a story claiming that General Motors and Toyota were both backing off on their fuel cell development efforts. It appears that in spite of quotes from GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz and Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe, fuel cells are still seen as the long term solution for on-board energy generation. Toyota communications boss Irv Miller has a new entry on the Open Road blog that corresponds with what Jaycie Chitwood and Bob Carter told ABG last month in Chicago. Toyota is still committed to the technology and has demonstrated the functionality. Their efforts now are focused on cost reduction. The other major issue - one that is outside of Toyota or GM's scope of responsibility - is the fueling infrastructure. It appears likely from what we've heard from multiple companies that widespread hydrogen availability won't happen first in the U.S. Places like China and Norway seem much more interested in making H2 a reality and will probably lead...

Fuel Cell Market Report: Utilities' - and Customers' - Use of Energy Effici
2008-03-07 07:05:00 Fuel Cell Market Report: Utilities' - and Customers' - Use of Energy Efficiency Rebates Grows, Chartwell Research Shows: "More electric and gas utility customers use energy efficiency rebates than any other product or service their utility offers. In Chartwell's latest survey, 24% of utilities reported that rebates have more participation than any other residential offering. In 2006, only 10% of utilities said rebates had the highest participation rate, according to Chartwell's latest report, Utility Trends and Best Practices in Energy Efficiency. The number of utilities offering energy efficiency rebates also continues to grow; in 2007, 71% of utilities reported offering them, compared to 58% in 2006 and 46% in 2004. This trend affirms that market transformation -- one sign of which will be the elimination of rebates that encourage consumers to choose energy efficient appliances and equipment -- has not been achieved, according to the report."Link

Cheap Hydrogen For Fuel Cell Vehicles7763
2008-02-28 03:46:00 One of the obstacles to what some call the hydrogen economy is the prospect of refuelling infrastructure. Most naysayers for hydrogen envision that hydrogen will become a one-to-one replacement for gasoline--my car will have a hydrogen tank in place of the gas tank, I'll go to the hydrogen filling station when I need more, and we'll have to find some way to distribute hydrogen from massive refiniries to the filling stations. But hydrogen isn't oil. It's a major component of water, for instance, and thus in theory can be made anywhere. The prospect probably puts a chilling fear into the hearts of oil company executives everywhere, but their goose is likely cooked any way that you slice it. The future of transportation is not in fossil fuels, or any other sort of resource like it, unless ethanol becomes a lot more viable than it is right now. And there's possibility there--hydrogen right now is no more or less viable than ethanol--but hydrogen has the advantage of order...
